So a couple of new developments on my end. So the sideboard. I feel like the greatest threats that we will see at tournaments are Esper Control and G/W Aggro. What are the best cards to fend off these threats?

One small suggestion with the side board as it is current however, if we're going to add counters to the board than I think Dissolve > Counterflux in that case.

Also, are you sure about Nykthos? I see it as more mana lost rather than gained the majority of the time.

I keep forgetting about Dissolve , thanks! Pithing Needle should help fend off planeswalker control and Fleecemane Lion 's monstrosity. Since I've shifted over a bit by cutting Elvish Mystic , should I toss Anger of the Gods in the SB to hose G/W especially Voice of Resurgence ?

Yeah no problem. I want this deck to be as competitive as possible with the other meta we will see in tourneys. and yeah Anger of the Gods is perfect for a lot of reasons

This looks like a really cool deck, and it definitely gets a +1. But, I'm pretty sure that AEtherling drops all counters from Master Biomancer when he leaves the board. Now, obviously when he comes back in, it's gonna be with another 2/2 counter on it (or, whatever power MB is at currently.) So an extra 2/2 counter on AEtherling is, of course, good. But, it's not going to be getting +2, then another +2 for a total of 4, then another +2 for a total of six counters, etc.

No it's not, but yeah I guess my wording of ever growing unblockable dodgy creature isn't completely accurate. I need to either play more Master Biomancer s or increase the current one's power Primeval Bounty to exile my AEtherling and have it come back bigger than ever.

Thanks for the +1!

+1 for sheer deck synergy

Thanks! I really like how everything came together. A bunch of little combos that can live together harmoniously within a single deck. Only thing I might be considering is a harder to remove source of card advantage to compliment Mercurial Chemister . Not sure if I'd go about that planeswalker style and if so where I'd make the change.

Thoughts on Ral Zarek as opposed to a Jace or another PW?

October 10, 2013 2:11 p.m.

Emrakool says... #9

I've considered possibly a one of Jace. Ral Zarek has some great interactions that I don't really want to forfeit by replacing him. There's of course the untap effects with Mercurial Chemister , and also being able to use his -2 along with Mizzium Mortars and Rapid Hybridization to turn a fatty into dust.

When subbing with your side, how do you know what to exchange! Everything is so nice the way that it is ya know.

Thanks! I'm still working out things with it a bit. Anger of the Gods should help against an unfavorable aggro matchup, and Pithing Needle could see a ton of duties vs UWx control (planeswalkers and AEtherling ), creatures with monstrosity, etc. Dissolve works as a decent counterspell and Destructive Revelry is for the enchantment heavy format, though I may opt for more Fade into Antiquity if the gods give me problems.

Given the options I'd probably cut somewhere around the 6cc cards to make room for anti-aggro. Depending on where the meta goes, I may need to consider graveyard hate or an uncounterable fatty to give reanimator or control fits.

Went 2-6 at FNM last night. I lost, but I had a lot of fun doing it. I lost hard to GWR and GW aggro. I wasn't able to buy the rest of the Anger of the Gods for the sideboard until after. Even then, those decks are extremely fast and we need to do something about them if we want to live. The majority of my losses weren't neck and neck either. It was my opponent decimating my face in 4 turns and me conceding. After this happened to me with one of my opponents, I said "Alright, well since we have time, how about a friendly game?" We play and the deck worked perfectly. I just had a lot of stupid draws which leads me to believe that I'm just not shuffling that great as dumb as that sounds. I get lazy with shuffling, and I'm really bad at riffling. I told this to one of the judges at my LGS after the tournament and his advice was "Never be lazy when shuffling. The second you get lazy shuffling is when you start losing matches." Pretty wise words.

My last match was with Matt Jones of www.hipstersofthecoast.com I Unexpected Results ed a Stormbreath Dragon and his jaw dropped. I really wished at that moment I pulled my Worldspine Wurm but oh well. I lost horribly to him as well, but he admired my ambition to play a batshit crazy deck as opposed to the same carbon copies of GP and pro tour decks everyone else is doing. He said that he would make a write up of me and more importantly the deck which should be on the site on October 21st. It sounds pretty cool, and I hope some people who see it there would be able to offer some more advice for us.

Yeah unfortunately it's so heavy on the back end, I may have to overload on removal/blockers to bring in from the SB to deal with aggro. I don't know if aggro even deserves to be called aggro anymore. When I first started playing, getting a 2/2 body for one mana or a 3/3 body for two was a luxury. Now it's almost expected.

Thanks for taking such interest in the deck and giving it the pilot testing I may not have time for. I look forward to seeing this deck get some love from the public. Also, thanks for the feature(I think?)!

Yeah no problem. I fucking love this deck. I pointed him to this page in an email, so if he wants to get in contact with you at all he can. As I said before, I just want the deck to be as competitive as possible. A friend of mine even suggested adding Supreme Verdict and mayber some other U/W control cards. Between the Chromatic Lantern and Sylvan Caryatid we could have the mana needed. I'm really uncertain though. I know you can't make a deck 100% invulnerable, especially a janky deck, but ugh, I just want to be able to last against the top8 decks.

October 12, 2013 6:08 p.m.

Emrakool says... #15

I considered Supreme Verdict but then I'd get the "Why aren't you running Sphinx's Revelation ?" followed by the "Why don't you just play UWx control?" Of course that's not the reason this deck got started. Sure there's FNMs to be won if you play everyone else's list and play it right.

But it's always more fun when your original, unpredictable jank ruins that netdeck's 3-0 night. :)

What do you think of replacing Master Biomancer with Prophet of Kruphix?

I feel like you'd get to replace Ral Zarek with some other planeswalker now that prophet handles the untapping.

October 12, 2013 10:25 p.m.

Emrakool says... #17

I find Ral Zarek to be quite useful, though at times I'd like to get a little more draw power in the early game. His untap ability is really mostly to interact with Mercurial Chemister or give me an extra mana available to cast something. The -2 however is great for taking pesky aggro creatures off the board or combining with another spell to kill off a fatty.

Really what I'm lacking is something to reliably keep aggro off my back that I can cast Turn 3/4. Which may eventually lead me to run Anger of the Gods in the main if I can't find any alternative.

Electromancer's fallen under my radar with this. It only serves as a chump blocker against aggro and there's only 9 total spells in the deck that it reduces the cost of.

No worries. I have some new developments on my end.

Here's the article: http://www.hipstersofthecoast.com/2013/10/power-toughness-unexpected-results-standard/

I thought it was funny. I went 1 in 4 at FNM again, but I met a real standup fellow who admired the deck and offered to give me some advice on how to improve it. A few ideas include adding Magma Jet , using Polukranos, World Eater in place of Biomancer, adding more mana fixers, adding more Mercurial Chemister as a cornerstone to the deck, and dropping a number of other cards. I'll have a proper list after my correspondence, but I like the improvements so far. As it stands right now the deck is very hit or miss with mostly miss. It needs more ramp and more midrange and more removal. As always, I'll be back with more info.

October 21, 2013 6:55 p.m.

Emrakool says... #24

I had a feeling Polukranos might come up, as well as the reintroduction of Elvish Mystic . The extra ramp creatures and loss of Master Biomancer will probably take Gruul Ragebeast completely off the menu.

Actually I don't really mind the Mystic, as it helps accomplish the feat of casting my 4cc spells on Turn 3. Chromatic Lantern is almost completely replaceable as its only major function is making all my lands produce U or R for Niv-Mizzet.
