Perhaps I'm old-fashioned —May 26, 2015
Testing out two Sorin, Solemn Visitor and only one Elspeth, Knight-Errant. This should improve the burn matchup, and I've perhaps been a bit stuck in my ways. It'll be good testing for the upcoming modern tournament here at tappedout.
So here's an interesting question -
What kind of cards is this deck missing? What would you hope for in the future? What's lacking here and how could you change it?

I imagine efficient instant speed card draw would be great to have.
April 15, 2015 8:01 a.m.
ChiefBell, that's a fascinating question to me. I can't really ask for "better" token producers, as what I have currently do me just fine, and it would be an unreasonable expectation for Wizards to print something better than Lingering Souls. Unlike most decks, I can't ask for a Siege Rhino type creature, because I already have the option of Hero of Bladehold, which is more than powerful, but any creature I run will be removed by the spot removal my opponent will have saved. Like bigguy99 said, hand draw is what this deck most needs. Tokens can't run Dark Confidant because of Spectral Procession-6 damage from an automatic 4 of is practically lethal. But what if Wizards were to do a card that would only be played with 3 white mana that also produced 3 spirits? Then I could potentially have access to bob, granting this deck the card draw that it needs. And the 2 cmc tends to be the most versatile as well in tokens. So if I were to ask for anything it would be a 3 cmc Spectral Procession.

What about a creature that created tokens on ETB for the 4 mana slot?
April 15, 2015 9:16 a.m.
An interesting idea, for sure. A true token rhino haha. Now that you've given me that idea, if there were to be a card that produced 2 tokens and also had an anthem effect built in that would be pretty damn good. Probably too good for wizards to even think of printing though, to be honest.
April 15, 2015 9:31 a.m.
It would be way too good or too expensive. With an anthem effect you're getting 2/2 token(s) minimum. That would be worth 2 mana (the anthem). Creating 2/2 tokens would be worth a lot of mana. And then you have to factor in the body.
Even something like -
WW2
As ~ enters the battlefield put a 1/1 white soldier creature token onto the battlefield under your control.
Creature tokens you control get +1/+1.
2/2.
So for 4 mana you get 4 power and toughness that doesn't just die to removal. You also get a win condition because it can buff your other tokens enough to win the game. So having summoning sickness can kinda be irrelevant when you have 4 lingering souls tokens that have just been buffed to 3/3 fliers.
Would you play that?
April 15, 2015 9:43 a.m.
I'm a little confused because you wrote the creature as being a 2/2, but then you said 4 power and toughness. If it were a 4/4, then yes, I could definitely play that. I would have to test it against Elspeth, Knight-Errant though.

I know it was mentioned before and you replied, but now when we have DTK for a while, a lot of people are playing 2 Raise the Alarm and 2 Secure the Wastes, instead of 4 Alarms. It's worse early but amazing topdeck in late game. What do you think?
April 15, 2015 10:14 a.m.
Only run a 1 of if you are to run it. While it does make a great topdeck, that's the only time you want to run into it.
April 15, 2015 11:02 a.m.
In reply to the last comments, tomorrow at FNM I will test my 1x Secure the Wastes instead of 1x Raise the Alarm. I don't think it's worth running 2 since they are only good in late-game, but a 1x can be another win-condition. I look forward to the primer too :D
April 16, 2015 3:53 a.m.
If you want to play Secure the Wastes I would personally not remove Raise the Alarm as it's your only two drop tokenmaker. I would rather remove a thoughtseize. 6 disrupts should be enough.
April 16, 2015 4:50 a.m.
I thought of that too, but it's just such a powerful token producer.
April 16, 2015 5:11 a.m.
What about a single planeswalker or mainboard Auriok Champion? Im sure one of those could go.
April 16, 2015 7:44 a.m.
Those were the last too cards I thought about as optional replacements. But I still think Thoughtseize is the best replacement. Because you will face a lot of matchups were 7 disrupts can be down right hurtfull for your build. Still, there are other,(often bad machtups to be clear), were they are all amazing.
April 16, 2015 8:11 a.m.
I would feel comfortable taking out one ofy planeswalkers for a single copy. And who knows, maybe it's good enough of a card to do that for. But femme, spectral and lingering should always be 4 ofs. Flying is incredibly important. And I prefer having 7 forms of hand disruption because without it B/W tokens has no chance against combo.
April 16, 2015 8:24 a.m.
I play tokens alot to. Have you tried one mainboard Timely Reinforcements. Seems good
April 16, 2015 8:36 p.m.
Timely Reinforcements is good in a blossom list. In a non blossom list though there are much better choices.

Is that just because Cifka played them alongside Blossom at the PT...
They're good when Burn is big, really.
April 16, 2015 8:42 p.m.
Glistener, I don't base my opinions solely on what one person does at a PT. Yes, they're good. No, they do not have a place in the main deck if you aren't using blossom. Auriok Champion is a better spot and you can play a Spectral Procession afterwards. You have to consider the board presence aspect as well as the life gain. The 3 cmc card is one of the strictest card positions to fill in the B/W token's list.

I see. I guess there's the idea that you will probably have more guys anyway.
April 16, 2015 8:51 p.m.
Exactly. There is a reason why it is good in a blossom deck, and there are reasons why it isn't as good in a non blossom deck. I'm not some charlatan who only knows anything about tokens because someone happened to be playing them at a pro tour.

Sorry, I'm just in an irritable mood right now. I didn't get much sleep and I'm way behind on some of my personal projects. Thankfully I get to sleep in tomorrow. Class got cancelled.
