Zada is being recommended as a 1 or 2 of just to be clear

Wow really cool build, I'm sleeving this up for sure. No suggestions, looks super solid! +1

Ps. I look forward to seeing your sideboard break down, with different matchups. Hell, then it'd be a primer!

I just don't get the single Bitterblossom. Shouldn't there be more if you want to draw it early, because that is a terrible top deck late game.

The thing is, Bitterblossom is a powerhouse, but not a great top deck like you said. Late game it becomes either an emergency prowess trigger or a big goyf snack. It has a slow payoff early game, but its ability to pump out bodies as the game shifts into top deck mode is nice. It's not a lethal draw but it can easily be start of a grind to victory. I haven't felt any inclination to squeeze in a second, but I'll consider it.

Why not put in a Tainted Strike so you can hit the with a huge infect so you don't have to uber pump for a one shot.

Because if it doesn't kill them in that one shot, I've emptied my hand and those poison counters mean nothing.

I'm sure it's been suggested, but Atarka's Command?

Remove Rending Volley, because Twin is dead. RIP Twin. What do you think about discard, though? Or goyf? I can see spot removal ruining this though, you only really have vines to stop against it.

Good deck overall.

Curius52 says... #10

Yeah, Volley is out, I've just been too lazy to update the sideboard due to a lack of a real meta at my store. Discard is something I might try at some point, but I'm not too worried about not having it. The abbots and bobs provide enough card advantage to get past spot removal.

I'm looking to make a similar modern deck but just in the gruul colors. Got any good list for that?

Curius52 says... #12

Well, you could rip out the Dark Confidants for a few more Kird Apes. You could effectively replace Bitterblossom with Young Pyromancer. The Kolaghan's Commands replaced Atarka's Commands so they could probably go back. Your biggest problem is going to be removal, which I found at the first tournament I took this to as a gruul deck. I don't have any ideas for replacing Terminate and Abrupt Decay, but they are the most important cards black gives the deck. Also losing Bob takes away the best card advantage engine. The biggest challenge then is replacing the spot removal and filling your hand. I'm sure it's possible with some thought. Good luck if you decide to build it!

great deck! i have one question, how do organize your description like that, with the pull down lists and all.

Thanks. Right below the comment box is a link that says "Formatting tips". It has a great guide to making html spoilers in deck descriptions.

I'm not sure if this has been a discussion before, if so feel free to just ignore the comment, but the few times that I playtested I found that the deck seemed slightly land light, especially for 3 colors. Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth also almost always seemed like a dead draw and generally just seems inconvenient. I had some really explosive hands (even one that was able to win on turn 3), and every time it was a hand with at least two lands. So maybe try and go up to 19? I know your CMC is low, but the amount of landless hands seeems like maybe you're pushing it a bit too far.

Curius52 says... #18

Yeah, it's come up before. Why do you believe Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth is a dead draw? I do occasionally have mana issues, but the deck rewards aggressive mulliganing.

May 24, 2016 8:07 p.m.

Unfathomable says... #19

I feel like Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and Forest also are both often dead draws because there are effectively no spells that can be cast with with them on T1, which can be catastrophic for a deck with average CMC of 1.5. Also the only card that you really need more than one black source for is Relentless Dead, and that's only a one of. I mean I'm sure you have more experience with how the deck works than I do, but I feel like you should take out the urborg and forest as well as two other cards for an extra Bloodstained Mire, Blood Crypt, Overgrown Tomb, and a Verdant Catacombs

May 25, 2016 12:38 a.m.

Curius52 says... #20

I can totally see your point on Urborg being a turn one dud, and probably unnecessary. If they weren't so expensive I'd have 4x Verdants, since they can grab both the colors I lose if Blood Moon hits. I'll replace the Urborg with a Mire, but the Forest needs to stay. The best plan is usually fetch for the most relevant shock T1 then the basic of the color you don't have T2 to avoid too much pain.

ironwolf1 says... #21

You only have 5 cards that produce red mana, and nearly 1/3 of your deck requires red mana to cast. None of your red mana is in Mountains, so it isn't fetchable. This seems like an issue.

July 6, 2016 11:36 a.m.

you can fetch Blood Crypt and Stomping Ground with fetch lands because of the mountain type on the card. he's just fine.

ironwolf1 says... #23

Oh thats right. But still, 5 symbols for a third of your deck seems low.

Given the price-tag and the main board, I would expect nothing less than 4-0's at FNMs
