I was playing Lullmage Mentor a while back. Since I only have 5 counterspells, it didn't pay off as much as I'd prefer. I also rarely got 7 merfolk that I would rather counter a spell with than attack. If I'm at 7, I'm probably just going to kill you. haha! Thanks for the suggestion, however!

I've been trying to build something like this for a little while now and it seems to be a lot of fun - I would consider Opposition for several reasons.

Fish are a ton of fun! Opposition seems like a lot of fun as well. I've seen it at my local game store before, but haven't considered adding it until now. It's a pretty good idea. I'll have to put it on my list!

Check out my Merfolk EDH deck: Death to All Land Lubbers. Call to the Kindred could work well in this, especially with Wanderwine Prophets . Empress Galina (my commander) is also awesome in EDH and a Merfolk (in Invasion they used that symbol to denote it).

I've found counterspells underpowered in EDH, and prefer mass wipe. How do you use them?
September 21, 2013 8:35 p.m.
MangoPunch, I generally save them for things that are really going to mess up my board, such as when people wipe when I'm in a good board state. Or when people play really annoying cards, such as Vorinclex, Voice of Hunger . Also helpful to note, other than Absorb and Render Silent , my counters can be placed on an Isochron Scepter . Actually considering taking Absorb out... It's fun, but not as helpful as some other counters in EDH. You are correct, though, counters in EDH are rather underpowered unless you know the other decks you are playing very well and know what is counter-worthy. Even then, they are likely to pull some other nasty from their deck...

I'm impressed. This guy has been sitting in my binder for a long time and I've been wondering what kind of deck could be made with him.

Hey, very cool deck, building a merfolk deck on my own and yours is pretty much what I was planning. Other merfolk EDHs contain a lot of weak merfolk, that dont stand a chance in EDH. Pick the best ones.
A few suggestions:
- Mirror Entity, for a strong buff, that can end an opponent the turn it comes out, if you a have a few islandwalk merfolks out. - Is there a way you ensure your islandwalk-folks can get through easily? Quicksilver Fountain or Spreading Seas could get in handy- Clever Impersonator either to copying one of your own goddies or make use of an enemy threat- Coat of Arms and/or Door of Destinies for extra buff. - Empress Galina for steal-effects if you like them. She is a merfolk too if you look at the current description- Land Tax If you have mana problems. This card might be obsolete if you experience massive draw and never run short on mana- Riptide Laboratory for evasion of your commander and wizards - Maze of Ith for protection instead of Mystifying Maze - Maybe even Kor Haven for protection or Prahv, Spires of Order

Highrise, I'm glad you enjoyed checking out my list. Thank you for the feedback!
I had Mirror Entity in here for a while and took it out for some silly reason. It'll likely be making a reappearance soon.
I do not have a manner of ensuring Islandwalk is relevant other than Stormtide Leviathan. I've found that turning people's land into Islands make them mad for some reason...so the Levitathan seems to be the best way at the moment. For this reason, I've been moving away from relying on Islandwalk lately.
I've found Door of Destinies to be a bit safer in my meta. There are a couple Goblin decks that can outpace me, this making Coat of Arms a bit terrifying. I had the Door in Sygg (and Olivia Voldaren - EDH) for some time. It just didn't feel as powerful or even synergistic as I had hoped.
Empress Galina was initially on my list, but was determined to be to scary at the time. However, the times have changed and my friend's decks have gotten scarier. She may make an appearance soon.
Land hasn't been too big of an issue as of late, but I am a huge fan of Land Tax. If I ever pick one up, it will definitely go in here. Alternately, I had a good amount of success with Surveyor's Scope as well.
When it comes to land, I really like your suggestions. I had never even considered Riptide Laboratory in here for some reason! I'll need to find one... Mystifying Maze was a poor man's Maze of Ith, but I've actually found it's exiling effect to be deceptively excellent. Opponents get really sad when they forget it removes all the counters, enchantments, etc. from their Voltron.

Hindering light would be a better option rather than dream fracture IMHO

It is a great list. I will be using most of the list, due to great synergy.

jopesleffrey, thanks! Glad you like it! I used to run Hindering Light, and now that Sygg is a bit more combo-y, I should probably move back in that direction. But, Dream Fracture is one of my pet cards in EDH. It serves as a bit of a truce. "Hey, you can't have your Craterhoof Behemoth, but you can have whatever you draw!"
May 13, 2015 10:16 p.m.
Ahhh I like your style jpeloquin can't hate someone for giving you draw. Even if you did Just counter there CHB

rewtyman14, Sygg used to be a deck of cloning and stealing stuff. Cloning all of my lords and stealing all of your stuff was awesome. And then people decided that they didn't like me playing their deck... So, Sygg had a shift into bad combo. That being said, I would like Bribery to make a reappearance some day. Thanks for the suggestion!

Harsh Mercy would be a great additon, it's a (most of a )board wipe that would not hit your side at all, also Merrow Commerce could work well.
I got a Tiny Leader merfolk deck, it might give you some more ideas. Merfolk Tiny Leaders
October 26, 2015 3:58 p.m.
A tapping device, Stonybrook Schoolmaster, and Intruder Alarm makes an infinite combo.
November 30, 2015 10:09 p.m.
@Kala: How about Mothdust Changeling? It's even a Merfolk!
December 10, 2015 8:06 a.m.
-1 Sword of the Animist, +1 Thought Vessel
Moving more in the combo direction, there are less attackers and I want more ramp artifacts. As amazing as Sword of the Animist is, I'm not convinced this is the deck for it at the moment.
