Darkness

Well he does look pretty after all

Here is a little story I wrote for the origins of this deck, which were some 7-8 years ago, back then it featured masssacre wurm. Hope you enjoi it :)

Our general led us into battle on a rainy day, we weren't long from the so called darkened graveyard where we were supposed to meat up with the rest before the final battle, but what we didn't knew was that there lived an ancient creature underneath the earth in these lands. Once it became dark and we had about a days walk ahead of us we camped for the night. While we were eating the remains from yesterdays hunt, old Pine as we called him talked about this myth of a creature, a wurm so big it could devour whole dragons if not even the great leviathans of the sea. "Manifestly", he said "this creature used to slaughter whole nations of men in the ancient times without reasoning, it did it due to fun, it fancied killing, it loved the smell of blood and massacre". The other men and most of my friends went to sleep with a smile on their face because they thought the story was funny and nothing to worry about, as for me I wasn't exactly in a good mood. My father always said that most myths was pure fabrications but that some on the other hand wasn't to be joked about. The next day after 7 hours of walk we met with the other half as planned, but something was unusually strange. There was no enemy to be seen even though we were capable of seing miles from where we were. I spotted a bone sticking up from the ground and told everybody to pay attention. But as general Redritch pulled the bone of the ground, the earth itself suddenly started shaking. I heard an army, I smelled men, I felt the trample, but I saw a feast! My fellow brothers were running around screaming and terryfied, it was clear from the look of their expression that they had seen hell. I just stood there without moving as much as a single nerve, as the great wurm was slaughtering my friends and brothers, those I were bond to protect... Blood, blood were everywhere flying through the air with the speed of sound. we were defenseless, the big wurm were flawless, it just fattened itself in our kind as if we were flies stuck in a spiders net. Now im standing here in the very last moment of my life preparing myself to face the same death as my brothers laying torn apart around me, the last thing I do is peing myself.

Originally I had this deck build because I wanted to try and play with Massacre Wurm in modern. This was about 7-8 years ago I think - I started magic back when 2013 had just come out and Return to Ravnica was on its way. The decklist originally looked something like this: 4x Blood Seeker 4x City of Brass 3x Cloudshift 2x Detention Sphere 4x Forbidden Orchard 3x Ghostly Prison 2x Godless Shrine 2x Hallowed Fountain 4x Hunted Phantasm 3x Illness in the Ranks 4x Marsh Flats 2x Mercy Killing 1x Plains 4x Serum Visions 2x Soul Warden 4x Soul's Attendant 4x Suture Priest 1x Swamp 3x Watery Grave 4x Blood Artist Though this wasn't my very first iteration of the build the vanilla version was similar to this and I think this mainboard was the first I was somewhat proud of. I had some inspiration from a few other similar decks that were around back then, but it definitely felt very unique at least to me, so I grew more and more fond of it. The decklist back then relied heavily on Illness in the Ranks and Blood Artist which were ofc an amazing little combo to pull off when you casted Hunted Phantasm and potentially got another ETB trigger with Cloudshift. The deck shined mostly against creature heavy decks that weren't too fast - which is a lot to ask in modern. The deck was not good at a competitive level and only decent at lower tiers. Today the deck is vastly different, but the fun that the deck puts on the table is still the same - the deck is extremely fun to play, it simply does what no other deck in modern does atm. I promise you that if you play this deck you will get to see your opponents laugh and loose in the same setting, which is most uncommen for this format.

This deck thrives on the fact that a fair amount of cards in magic gets obnoxiously frightening when you have tons of creatures. Rakdos Charm and Massacre Wurm are the best examples. Though this deck used to run a single copy of the latter - today Rakdos Charm, Batwing Brume and Trespasser's Curse is what I prefer. The deck deals rather efficiently with combat damage as a whole, actually unless our opponent is highly aggressive, we will be able to prevent combat damage long enough for a win condition to emerge. Darkness, Batwing Brume and Beyeen Veil   holds a total of 10 copies in this deck and is what I have found to be the right amount. Against creature heavy decks the plan is simple, hold them back until our win condition is within our grasp - till then make sure no threats sees the day of light - here im talking about every single card in magic that wins on non-combat damage. This is where our Inquisition of Kozilek and Vendilion Clique comes into play. Prismari Command helps us reach Hunted Dragon faster as well as providing a way to either loot for necessary cards, remove annoying threats or deal with artifacts. Pongify is a great way to deal with those pesky Murktide Regent fuckers and etc. that singlehandedly swings for huge amount of damage, which preferably isn't something we'd want to spend Fog effects on. Fire / Ice is a great tempo card that fills a nice spot in the deck - offering options like additional time, removal, or direct damage. Lightning Bolt has long been a card that this deck was needing and I just lately added it and it has been great, more than often, the extra 3 damage is often just what a Rakdos Charm is lacking to finish the game. also ofc it is the best removal only next to prismastic ending.

1) Try to do as much as possible in our opponents turn, this is in modern almost always true ofc, but in this deck in particular - we will be giving our opponents insane amounts of creatures, and they might just end being too much for us to handle. it's important to be prepared for explosive turns.

2) Holding up white and black mana options can trick our opponent into attacking with less creatures due to Batwing Brume, ultimately giving us more time if we don't actually have a Fog effect.

3) never cast vendillion clique before attackers, you might need the mana for Fog effects.

4) A turn 3 Hunted Phantasm can sometimes be the right option, with a Trespasser's Curse on the board the threat of an unstoppable massive goblin attack is less frightening as we will have gained some life. This is especially true if we have any Fog Effects in hand for coming turns.

5) try to watch out for sling-gang luitenant and Walking Ballista activated effects, even with a rakdos charm on the stack they will be able to play around it.

6) The most important is - don't be afraid to go on low hp before starting to cast Fog effects, this way you will win much more as the cards value rises.

Please do try out the deck and get a feel of it for yourself. It is very fun and is actually much better than what you might expect. It is not exactly top tier - but in the current meta, it's not half bad and it is a bit of fresh air and much unexpected to everyone - unless our opponent runs an absurd amount of counterspells or wipe effects you should be set for a competitive and different modern match.
