Starting out from the 'The Scrydigger' from the May 2007 article on Daily MTG (http://archive.wizards.com/Magic/magazine/article.aspx?x=mtgcom/daily/cm71), I want to improve onto the deck to turn it a bit more competitive?
Tl;dr of the deck's objectives: Scry for our parts, setup the top to have targets for
AEthermage's Touch
, respond to our opponents actions with it in one of these ways:
-Blink Venser or Whelk in to counter a dangerous spell or in the case of Venser, temporarily get rid of a dangerous permanent.
-Blink
Angel of Salvation
to give us a more favorable battle phase either on the offensive or the defensive. Angel can also be used to protect our guys from cards such as Anger of the Gods or other spot removal. (Bolt, Electrolyze, etc.)
-Blink in
Epochrasite
for a 4/4 body that will come back if killed.
-Seht's Tiger protects us from targeted spells such as burn or discard for a whole turn and should be cheated in quickly if we expect a barrage of those spells that turn.
-The last creatures are
Cryptic Annelid
and Sage of Epityr who can be played to give us a nice view on our deck. (Useful to setup a
Judge Unworthy
or simply our next draw).
Momentary Blink
is there mostly to follow up on Aethermage and keeps our creatures permanently on the board as well as trigger their ETB once again.
I have not been able to playtest this yet but here are the problems I am seeing:
1- The deck is running 4 Azorius Chancery in the hope of bouncing
New Benalia
for more scry. Depending on the meta, that might be too weak to land destruction? Sure it gives 2 mana but you lose two land drops if it goes boom. Not sure it's really worth the risk. Also, both
New Benalia
and AC enters the battlefield tapped which slows the manabase a lot. I might look into replacing these lands with other non-basics but i'm not sure what is really worth. As soon as Temple of Enlightenment is not standard anymore (when prices will drop),
New Benalia
is probably getting cut in favor of the Temple. Same scry, more colors and the same drawback.
2- The hallowed fountains might be cut for some Glacial Fortress due to the lack of healing in the deck and the amount of basic that we will be running probably. (Due to 1's lands being cut for 1 or 2 special lands and the rest to basics.)
3-I feel like only running
Momentary Blink
might not give us enough capacity to save our guys from returning to our hands when we play them through
AEthermage's Touch
. I'm thinking about adding
Cloudshift
or Ghostly Flicker, the first being easier to cast and the later being stronger under
Judge Unworthy
.
