If you want to be mean, there is always Overburden, which punish player for playing real creatures.

Hi Osbert, I actually do keep meaning to find an Overburden! I agree it is very mean, could provide a lot of laughs though!

If u do decide to go the Proteus Staff route with a few impactful creatures i would highly recommend considering Azami, Lady of Scrolls for guaranteed card draw and maybe even Docent of Perfection  Flip for redundancy.

what about Turnabout ? what would you replace that for? it seems like a pretty solid card as well as Elixir of Immortality

Ashmed says... #5

Hi CRShadoW, Turnabout is a very good card, especially when paired with High Tide and spells with X in the casting cost. I don't think it would make much of a difference in this deck and I don't think I would cut anything for it. Elixir of Immortality I left out in favour of Learn from the Past and Psychic Spiral as they both trigger Talrand and the life gain from Elixir is negligible.

Looks like a great deck!

could Peek be worth it? maybe over slip through space?

Retraced Image is a cute ramp spell. you reveal an island and put it into play

Thought Scour and Mental Note are more one mana cantrips

Pongify is another kill spell, maybe over vapor snag?

Into the Roil over disperse?

Lightning Greaves over swiftfoot boots?

do you like Anticipate over telling time?

would you want 2 mana counterspells over some of your 4 drop ones? like Arcane Denial over discombobulate for example?

I've been debating putting Aethersnatch in my Jori En deck, have you had good expirences with it?

If you have the time I've been working on my Jori En, Diving on a Budget and i think it plays similar to your deck, maybe you could take a look?

Hi hoardofnotions, thank you for the comment and the vote!

Peek is definitely worth it, I unfortunately don't have a copy of one yet though. Not sure if I would replace Slip Through Space with it though as I like being able to make Talrand equipped with Runechanter's Pike unblockable, however if I cannot think of anything else to replace it will be for that!

Retraced Image is awesome, I've not seen it before. I will definitely be picking one up!

I like Thought Scour over Mental Note, I may test it out but not sure what I would take out for it.

Pongify is brilliant, again I have the same problem as I do with Peek in that I don't have one.

Into the Roil is pretty cool, I will have to test it out.

Lightning Greaves would be a nice addition, unfortunately I only have one copy but am looking to get another for this deck.

I actually prefer Telling Time over Anticipate, I like being able to order my next draw etc. instead of losing 2 cards to the bottom of the library.

I like 2 mana counterspells, however I don't like the benefit they give my opponent so much xD I may look at some though and take them into consideration.

I have had good experiences with Aethersnatch, it is costly though. But later in the game it can be really satisfying to take an opponents game winning creature or their commander.

I will definitely take a look at your deck! Thank you again for all your suggestions, and thank you especially for actually reading the description and not suggesting any creatures!

Here is a few cards you could consider Frantic Search, Bribery, Temporal Mastery, and Reins of Power.

Hi CaptSillva, thank you for the suggestions!

Frantic Search is a good card which I may test out.

Bribery is awesome, however I am fairly poor! I will keep an eye out though as it would be an amazing addition.

I find that extra turns don't help out in this deck, so Temporal Mastery would not be a great addition.

Reins of Power is a card I did test for a little while but I didn't get on with it personally.

Paradox Engine I would suggest looking into this card. Since this deck runs off using spells. You can abuse the hell out of this card to keep making tokens

Ashmed says... #11

Hi Ze-Sook, whilst I agree Paradox Engine is an amazing card I would have to make several changes to my deck to make it work properly. It really needs plenty of mana rocks since it only untaps nonland permanents and I would rather not make a change that extreme when the deck works perfectly as it is.

It would admittedly be useful for untapping Isochron Scepter and Sol Ring, creating an infinite combo, however I am not a fan of running infinite combos in my decks. The only combo I have is the Isochron Scepter, Sol Ring and Dramatic Reversal combo and even that I'm not a huge fan of having.

Only suggestion I have at the moment is Dismiss into Dream nothing funnier than watching voltron decks die to this... or really any decks that target creatures

Hi Onlytruereject, thank you for the vote! I love the suggestion, it's an amusing interaction that I had never thought of. Un fortunately the high cost makes me wary. I'm tempted to test it out though just to see what happens!

Hey, I think monocolored decks always profit greatly from the medallions. Did you consider a Sapphire Medallion?

July 31, 2017 11 a.m.

Ashmed says... #15

Hi Tortlla737, I have considered it as a replacement for Jace's Sanctum as it cost's less and obviously helps with a lot more of my spells than just the instants and sorceries.

I love your deck and it inspired me to build one like it for my collection as Talrand was my first ever modern deck years ago. I can't figure out more than one combo for Altar of Demencia and know you wouldn't put a card in for one rare chance at a combo. So what am I missing?

August 13, 2017 2:52 a.m.

Ashmed says... #17

Hi thatrhetoricguy, thank you for the comment. Actually there is no combo with Altar of Dementia, I literally put it in there as an easy and free way to make use of my drake tokens in case a board wipe managed to get through or if I had to use them for blocking. I have been debating taking it out for some time, however I've never fully sold myself on it!

I am glad my deck has inspired you my friend! I wish you luck and a lot of fun with it!

August 14, 2017 4:03 a.m.

Well now you know the combo. Attach Runechanters Pike to either one flyer or Talrand himself and use Altar to mill yourself. Boom.

August 14, 2017 1:01 p.m.

Treasure Cruise, Dig Through Time seem great! might be worth running more looting type cards like Mental Note and Careful Study to help fuel them

How has Domineering Will worked for you? Is it a triple kill spell alot of the time?

How has Mirror Match worked for you?

I saw what you said about Gravitational Shift and i think it could use some reconsideration. It slows down your opponents creatures and you'll generally have more flying dudes that benefit. I do like favorable winds, so maybe you only have room to run one?

_Delta_ says... #20

Have you yet considered Kindred Discovery for this?

August 14, 2017 4:41 p.m.

Ashmed says... #21

thatrhetoricguy, I can't say that it has ever occurred to me to mill myself with the Runechanter's Pike. Not sure if it is a strategy I will adopt if I am honest.

hoardofnotions I have considered them all. I may try and find space for a Dig Through Time and may reconsider Careful Study but I am not a huge fan of the others. I might test them sometime and see if my opinion has changed though!

Domineering Will is funny to use as people don't expect it. It's also useful as a political tool as you can give another opponent creatures to help defend themselves.

Mirror Match is similar in amusement to Domineering Will, especially if the attacking player is running an ETB effect deck! It does cost a lot, however it has saved me a few times.

Delta-117 I did think about Kindred Discovery when it was spoiled, I think I may test it out, however I very rarely struggle to draw cards in this deck and I'm not sure what I would take out for this.

One of my friends runs a Talrand deck except he bases his deck around using Proteus Staff to cheese out the one and only creature in his deck:Blightsteel Colossus

Ashmed says... #23

Hi Baptist_Ben, it's certainly a very good game plan for this type of deck, I have been tempted several times to include just a few large creatures and a Proteus Staff, but ultimately I like the fully creatureless build.

Ziembski says... #24

Another pro for adding at least one creatures is Telemin Performance.

I've been playing a lot of creatureless decks, and that card is damn bad for us.

Whir of Invention could be cool. Get sol ring early, coat of arms late. Maybe add Seat of the Synod for more utility.
