themindxyz: It's too expensive cost wise, loses me value on countermagic, and honestly isn't worth it for the cantrips.

Rahl07: I'd run it if token decks start appearing in force again. If I ever build that Wishboard I want, it'll be there in a heartbeat. Right now, it'll too often be a dead card.

Ok, you haven't liked any of my suggestions so far, but hopefully we're operating on a strict "third time's the charm" basis. Here goes:

Perilous Research. Draw 2 for 2, and Talrand's trigger resolves first, so you'll never have to sacrifice anything important.

Three Wishes. It's more a red effect now, but with how low your curve is this is essentially a draw 3 for 3 that's drawback won't even keep you from using your counterspells if need be.

Shrine of Piercing Vision. I know, it's not the best of it's cycle, but if you drop it early in the game (off of a turn 1 Sol Ring perhaps?), it will amass counters fairly quickly with how low your curve is. Plus, it cracks for nothing, so it's completely unkillable. Plus, plus, if you run into it late game you only have to play one blue spell or wait one upkeep for it to basically have cycling. Plus, plus, plus, with it on the field you can leave three mana open and scare the combo players even if someone is sure you have no countermagic in hand.

sonnet666: Perilous Research is one I've been considering anyway, so you're on the money there. I have never heard of Three Wishes and it is glorious I love it. The Shrine is a bit too dependent on when I play it for me to want it. But, hey, two out of three ain't bad. :D

As a player who plays Talrand, Sky Summoner, this deck brings a tear to my eye. Beautiful mana curve, interestings effects, lots of spells, absence of creatures, it's steller! I have been doing it wrong. :p

+1, Excellent work!

Could Supplant Form be an idea? It's costy, but plainly disprespectful and it gives you one of their bombs

Just my two cents, but ever since Supplant Form got spoiled I've been trying, and failing, to come up with a reason it might be better to run than Control Magic. I'm still failing.

why play Hinder over Dissolve?

Helixr: Too costly for my tastes. Good suggestion, tho.

sonnet666: Saves Talrand from the odd spot removal, while still leaving a Talrand. In any deck that isn't this one (i.e., ones with other creatures), it saves something relevant from a wipe, allows for re-use of ETB's and LTB's, all kinds of good things that Control Magic doesn't do.

BlatantLizard: Commanders, dear friend (and by "dear friend", I mean "someone I don't know at all"). If someone casts their Commander, and I send it to the bottom of their deck with Hinder, there's no putting it back in the Command Zone. It's gone, oftentimes for good.

erabel: Good point, I wasn't thinking about planning on using it on your own creatures, and it could be good for a deck that cheats out big, scary creatures with ETB triggers, but I still can't see any deck wanting to hold up six mana to cast it at instant speed.

Why the Commander's Sphere? I know it works, but in a mono deck, it is not the greatest. I would suggest Mystic Speculation. It is fairly low cost, it has a buyback, and even if you don't buyback it, it helps you choose your draws.

Trockenmatt: It taps for colored mana and enters untapped and can be used as a cantrip even after it's been used for mana. 'sbasically it.

Already run the Speculation. It's like you didn't even read the list. (kappa)

have you ever considered putting in rebound cards?

WHY PLAY REBOUND CARDS WHEN YOU CAN Cast Through Time???

March 20, 2015 12:41 a.m.

but that isnt even in there. ANYWHERE.

March 20, 2015 12:42 a.m.

SomeDipshit says... #15

Probably because it's expensive and not really worth it, so long as you can keep drawing cards and casting spells without it. It'd be a lot of fun to play it, but it would be a large devotion of resources and would get blown up pretty quickly.

March 20, 2015 12:45 a.m.

but it IS worth it! i run it in melek. also, if you arent protecting ur stuff with counters, well... just wtf?

March 20, 2015 12:46 a.m.

SomeDipshit says... #17

Not my deck, but my first deck ever is a Talrand deck, and ... well, counters are VALUABLE -- especially when you only have 27 of them (lol, I am totally not kidding). In order to protect a large enchantment like that, you would need 9 free mana, at least, and then... you get a counterspell on rebound? NOT BUENO.

March 20, 2015 12:48 a.m.

it isnt mandatory. also, that shouldn't be an issue with your ramp. btw Thran Dynamo might be better in here than gilded b/c of monocolor.

k. erabel, I hereby endorse my recommendation of Cast Through Time

March 20, 2015 12:53 a.m.

also, why no Fabricate?

March 20, 2015 12:55 a.m.

SomeDipshit says... #21

ALSO. WHY NO Proteus Staff TO BE FOUND WITH THAT Fabricate??

I leave for THIRTY MINUTES and y'all gimme three billion notifications.

illumfolly, DERPLINGSUPREME:

  • Cast Through Time isn't in here because: A. It costs 7 mana (and I have a thing about nothing in here having a CMC higher than 5), B. It doesn't immediately grant me value out of that seven mana (i.e. I have to invest more mana and cards into this just for it to be worth it), and C. It loses me value on the very few counterspells I run (because I can't rebound them properly).
  • Rebound cards in general aren't in here because... there aren't any that are worth it. Distortion Strike, Taigam's Strike, Ojutai's Breath, and Ojutai's Summons are too small of effects; Recurring Insight, Sight Beyond Sight and Void Squall are too much mana for what they do; and I don't think Blessed Reincarnation helps me much at all.
  • Gilded Lotus is in here over Thran Dynamo because it taps for colored mana. I don't need it for ramp; what do I ramp into when the curve tops at 5? It allows me to cast more spells in one turn more effectively than the Dynamo does.
  • Proteus Staff isn't in here because I'm not trying to play Storm; I don't need the game to go the same way every time, and being able to stack my deck on a whim causes that kind of gameplay.
  • Fabricate isn't in here because I have all of six choices for it and they're not things I need the redundancy of a dedicated tutor for.

I know Talrand is a bit of a loner, but it's just great to Polymorph or Mass Polymorph with the garuntee of hitting some eldrazi titans or a Stormtide Leviathan
