I wanted to make a Talrand deck that was not too counterspell heavy - at least against their stuff unless absolutely needed and for when they target me - my playgroup relishes decks where one takes a commander that you usually see with a certain kind of decklist, used in a completely different way. The goals here are as follows.

  1. Play a hearty amount of instants and sorceries to take advantage of a potential Drake army (unblockable Drake army with Deepchannel Mentor). Support characters include Docent of Perfection  and also Baral, Chief of Compliance.

  2. Tunnel Vision is the 'secret sorcerer' in this deck. The idea is it could be used to take out a particularly difficult opponent but better to use it on myself as an alt win-con. Laboratory Maniac needs to be in play and I would like to draw that last card on the same turn - draw from a land like Mikokoro, Center of the Sea or other instants like Opt, etc. - any other suggestions welcome! Another option is playing out Thassa's Oracle. Plenty of ways to ensure I know what the bottom card is (Junktroller, Proteus Staff, Soldevi Excavations, instant and sorcery Scry options etc.). No one expects the TunnelVision! (props if you get the ref)

  3. Search is definitely necessary to have any hope of assembling the pieces - Proteus Staff to help find Laboratory Maniac; or Muddle the Mixture to find Thassa's Oracle; some additional options for finding Tunnel Vision (Personal Tutor, Mystical Tutor and the like), and some land search Expedition Map and Tolaria West to deal with some of my meta's threats or to help protect Talrand (Riptide Laboratory) or Boseiju, Who Shelters All to help make sure Tunnel Vision makes it through. Ethereal Usher can also search for a number of key pieces Tunnel Vision, Complete the Circuit or Deepchannel Mentor.

  4. Getting things to the bottom of everyone's libraries - Conundrum Sphinx will do this for everyone, single triggers include Proteus Staff, Junktroller, Spell Crumple, Jace, the Mind Sculptor and Soldevi Excavations just for me. May need more here? More playtesting needed...

  5. Leyline of Anticipation is to help cast some sorceries as instants and also to flash out wincons like Laboratory Maniac right before my turn if needed.

  6. Cowardice will deal with my meta's habit of targeting their own creatures for advantage, and I can also use it to return something being targeted if needed - synergistic with Erratic Portal too. Astral Dragon may allow me to steal something useful (twice!) to end the game and hope to find it via Proteus Staff rather than hardcast.

  7. Card Draw with Rhystic Study, Mystic Remora and various 1-2 mana instant/sorceries.

  8. Mana/ramp with High Tide, Drain Power and Baral, Chief of Compliance will reduce costs.

I could use some help to fine-tune this. Would be cool to be able to Tunnel Vision 3 opponents - Complete the Circuit could work or I could get 2 of them with Primal Amulet  /Primal Wellspring - seems more likely I will win via Tunnel Visioning myself, or with an army of unblockable flyers. Any other ideas for cards that would work well here and support the theme or provide an alternate wincon? - all suggestions welcome.
