Full primer in progress, I'm waiting until I get a chance to test and iterate on the list.

Introduction

Inspired by Sacred Hulk from cEDH.

The primary win condition is:

  1. Flash + Protean Hulk
  2. When Protean Hulk dies, fetch Laboratory Maniac + Hapless Researcher + Sacred Guide + Sylvan Safekeeper .
  3. Activate Sacred Guide , which will mill your whole deck.
  4. Activate Hapless Researcher to draw a card and win the game with Lab Maniac.

If Sacred Guide is drawn before being able to use the Flash Hulk combo, you can still set up a win with its ability alongside Jace, Wielder of Mysteries or Laboratory Maniac + a draw spell from hand.

Why Tamiyo?

For this combo, we need {G}{W}{U}, so the only options currently available for our Oathbreaker are Tamiyo, Field Researcher and Estrid, the Masked . Neither of these support the game plan directly, and they both have the same CMC. They also both end up at the same loyalty after using their respective +X or -X abilities.

Ultimately, I prefer the guaranteed protection and potential card draw Tamiyo offers compared to the small chance of ramp (via Wild Growth and Utopia Sprawl ) and relatively lackluster protection Estrid provides. The Mask isn't that useful because we only really need to protect permanents when we're trying to combo off, and Sylvan Safekeeper provides better protection at instant speed (and is part of the Hulk pile).

Why Silence as the Signature Spell?

The biggest downside of the Sacred Hulk pile is that we can't include any {W} cards except for Sacred Guide . It makes sense to try to find the best {W} card as a signature spell to try to get around this restriction, as long as it's not overshadowed by any {U} or {G} cards.

Silence is extremely useful for protecting our combo,

One other card I considered was Treasure Cruise because the command tax cost can be payed with Delve. However, due to the fact that there's only a single {W} card in the main deck, it makes sense to cut the strictly white fetch lands (along with some other lands), making Treasure Cruise more difficult to cast.

Future Updates

I plan to write a more complete primer that will address individual card choices and explore alternative/backup win conditions.

The main thing I'm looking to improve in the deck is achieving the right balance of ramp, card draw, and protection pieces. I think that I probably am leaning to far into ramp at the moment, but I plan to get some testing in to better tune this.

Thanks for reading!
