Tamiyo, Collector of Tales + Traverse the Ulvenwald .

UG delirium is a niche jank graveyard deck that looks to sift the yard with certain cards while making sure key pieces don't fall through the cracks.

Tamiyo, Collector of Tales is our commander, and with her, we have complete control over our graveyard. Each of Tamiyo's abilities enables us to further our goal and close out the game. Being a planeswalker with no ultimate ability, her priority on the table will be low, and as such, Tamiyo will be able to stay around and collect value for longer than most other commanders.
  • Tamiyo's constant ability prevents our opponents from interacting with our side of the board. This denial prevents blowouts like Narset, Parter of Veils and other wheel effects.

  • Tamiyo's +1 is the real meat and potatoes of our deck. By naming a specific card, we can potentially draw an extra card each turn while putting at least three cards into the bin. Cards with scry such as Crystal Ball , Mystic Speculation , Nissa, Steward of Elements , and Brainstorm let us know what cards to name. Pedantic Learning and Turntimber Sower grant us additional value on the side.

  • Tamiyo's -3 is the safety net of our operation. With it, we can retrieve anything that might've passed us by. It can also work as a system of recursion for us to return our powerful beaters. At our most dire, Perpetual Timepiece and Echo of Eons are our final lifelines to keep us from decking ourselves.

Traverse the Ulvenwald is our signature spell for the deck. With it, we can tutor for any land or creature in the deck for a bargain of mana. And with that, we can build our hand for any contingency.

- Ramunap Excavator allows us to play our lands from the bin, letting us play catch-up or replay utility lands.

- Reclamation Sage is the classic removal card, old and true and perfect for our cause.

- Scavenging Ooze helps hose our competition, and makes good use of any unneeded creatures in the yard.

- Profaner of the Dead is our board wipe on a stick, and helps us against any go-wide strategy

- Blast Zone is our pernicious deed of the deck, acting as targeted board removal for our enemies.

- Dust Bowl is a madhouse in this deck, and can be used to cripple any opponent that looks our way.

- Soldevi Excavations can give us a valuable, evasive form of scrying for Tamiyo's first ability.

-Lastly, any of our large beaters are always a good choice. Geralf's Masterpiece , Skaab Ruinator , Splinterfright , Soul Swallower , or Emrakul, the Promised End can quickly finish a game against an unprepared opponent.

Delirium, having four or more different card types in our graveyard, is one of our main goals. Getting delirium is easy, and can be done with one use of Tamiyo's first ability and a little luck. Cards like Tree of Tales Dryad Arbor and Thassa, God of the Sea count as two different types each, and should always be put to the yard when possible. But once we have delirium, what can we do?
  • Crop Sigil is one of our great early drops that can speed up our game and get us recursive value down the line

  • Gnarlwood Dryad is a value blocker for Tamiyo, as not many are willing to swing into a one drop deathtoucher. Getting it up to a 3/3 later on gives us a decent body in a fast format like oathbreaker.

  • Inexorable Blob can quickly build us an army of ooze, especially if we can politic one of the other players to take/block our blob while its tokens go towards other opponents each turn.

  • Soul Swallower is one of our best pounders, turning into a larger beater every turn. This thing gets out of hand quickly, becoming an immediate threat for our foes. With proper set up, we'll have a bundle of value that can outlast any opponent

  • Obsessive Skinner , a personal favorite, gives us the ability to barter with our opponents. Likewise, in a four player format, we're seeing up to three delirium triggers each round.

  • In any game, our first priority should be getting Tamiyo online. This can be accomplished as early as turn 3, and at 5 starting loyalty, she can usually survive the rotation simply on her own. Additionally, without any offensive abilities, we can stay under the radar and accrue value without drawing our opponent's ire.

  • Of course, our overall priority is getting delirium online. Regarding this, certain cards should always be put to the bin over the field. Tree of Tales , Seat of the Synod , Dryad Arbor , and Thassa, God of the Sea all count towards one half of our delirium requirements. On top of this, Genesis is a specific card that can recur us creatures every turn if its in the bin. Skaab Ruinator and Geralf's Masterpiece can easily recur themselves in the right situation, with Geralf's Masterpiece having the added benefit of discarding cards. Paired with Grimoire of the Dead , we can make sure our aforementioned cards go to where the should.

  • There will be times when we don't have any way of knowing what exists on top of our deck. However, we can always make educated guesses to prevent binning certain cards. At any point when we don't know what to expect, the best cards to name with Tamiyo's ability are Pedantic Learning , Splendid Reclamation , or Crystal Ball , depending on what we need at the moment. Although Tamiyo's second ability can retrieve anything we miss, it's always good to not miss our best cards to begin with.

  • If we ever find ourselves in a situation where Tamiyo is imprisoned or otherwise indisposed, we are not dead in the water like other decks. Our contingencies lie in Perpetual Timepiece , Splinterfright , and Kiora, Master of the Depths . Kiora is especially valuable in that, on use of her second ability, she can grab us a potential 2 cards, with the added benefit of not requiring them named beforehand.

  • Regardless of our situation, we want to be putting cards into the bin every turn until we have around 20-15 cards left in our library. At this point, we should switch priorities from filling the yard to pulling value. Late in the game, it is vital to get value cards online, either pulling them from the bin or playing them beforehand. Kessig Cagebreakers , Soul Swallower , Obsessive Skinner , and Inexorable Blob all give us additional value for each turn they remain active, and getting them out and online early is key to our success and closing out the game.

  • If our opponents haven't already fallen to our army of Oozes, Wolves, and Horrors, then closing out the game becomes necessary. To this end, recurring beaters like Vengevine , Geralf's Masterpiece , and Skaab Ruinator can make short work of a targeted opponent. If somehow even that fails, then its time to open the blind eternities and reach the end of our delirium.

  • Emrakul, the Promised End is our final goal and finisher to close out the game. We can spend as little as 6 mana for her with the proper set up, given that we have one of each card type in the bin. Emrakul is backbreaking to deal with, and can be easily recurred from the graveyard if she happens to die. There isn't much to say about Emrakul, as there's not much worse than an evasive 13/13 flample turn-stealing Eldrazi titan.

  • This brew suffers only a few shortcomings in bad matchups. Both Burn and Lifedrain decks have the potential to get past our blockers and cripple us before our engine's online. To this end, it's always good to rely on your own politics, and, failing that, stopping self-mill for a while to put up an immediate front. Once we're going, however, it becomes truly difficult to deal with our delirium.
