Introduction

"You're a wizard, Harry!" It's time to put an end to all of the commander muggles' shenanigans once and for all. Welcome to my bant wizard tribal helmed by the biggest douchebag wizard Derevi, Empyrial Tactician himself. He's sick of the muggles meddling with his plans and is plotting their demise. There is no mercy. The entire filthy muggle pod will be on wizard lockdown before they know it.

This is a 75% power level deck built around the wizard tribal theme that comes with unique properties that gets enhanced with Derevi's tap/untap ability. Since most of the wizards have relatively poor damage output and are mostly for utility purposes, Derevi will do most of the attacking as she has natural evasion. This makes the sword equipment package a viable subtheme option. My playgroup's meta is made up of a wide variety of strategies including Meren of Clan Nel Toth reanimator to Rhys the Redeemed tokens.

Why Derevi?

  • She is in colors which provides access to unique and powerful wizards like Aven Mindcensor/Thrasios, Triton Hero not accessible by other popular wizard tribal commanders
  • Her colors also provides access to powerful removals and recursion
  • She is literally unkillable and keeps coming back for more tap/untap shenanigan
  • She combos with some wizards like Voidmage Prodigy as an added bonus

Other Wizards

  • Inalla, Archmage Ritualist: She is a precon commander with a powerful eminence ability that leans towards abusing wizard ETB triggers and reanimation strategies. Her colors provide access to the most powerful tutors in the format as well as some other unique wizards.

  • Azami, Lady of Scrolls: She is one of the most powerful wizard commanders but unfortunately draws a ton of hate. She is pretty straightforward and almost always lean towards drawing the entire deck and winning with Laboratory Maniac.

In a 75% meta, the combat step is still as important, which is why cards like Archetype of Imagination/Magus of the Moat is included in my deck and has proven to be widely effective in dealing with a plethora of strategies. Strategically speaking, the best way to navigate the pod with this deck is to know your opponent's commanders and their strategies. This will help you deploy the correct wizards at the right time to prevent a blowout. Permissions are mostly for protection and disrupting other combos.

Early game:

Ramp with mana rocks and deploy Derevi, Empyrial Tactician whenever possible. Get out a draw engine like Thrasios, Triton Hero asap to provide enough gas to answer early threats and get to the late game.

Mid game:

Deploy defensive wizards like Voidmage Prodigy/Sylvan Safekeeper to enable other wizards to be deployed safely without fear of removals. Use Derevi, Empyrial Tactician tactically to disrupt potential threats as well as generating advantage by untapping one of our permanents.

Late game:

The game should be on lockdown at this point with several wizards controlling the board. It should not be difficult to close out the game with either commander damage, wizard beatdown, or one of our combos.
