  1. You sound a bit entitled right now.

  2. I don't believe anyone "ripped into you". The guy above me suggested that you add creature protection if you are concerned about removal but would like to keep running him. I suggested a card with a similar effect if you wanted to cut the creature, but keep the effect.

  3. My build is a bit different than yours so I thought I'd not make a comment since my criteria for what makes the cut in an Oloro deck is so vastly different.

  4. If you really want someone who doesn't evaluate cards the same as you to help with choosing out of that list: Rhystic Study, Test of Endurance, Propaganda, Vampiric Tutor should all find spots.

I wasn't trying to sound entitled or whiney, it's just that I posted in the EDH deck help forum (that seems to have been a joke or the guy just got flooded), and people found it more important for me to keep Sovereign/Sovereign in the deck than giving me a second opinion. You weren't the problem at all, and I found you helpful, despite the fact that I was already considering the card. I understand why you didn't make a comment, but having a second opinion is always important. I thank you for your help on cutting it down, I really, REALLY needed that list cut down, which was the most important thing. I've already made my decisions on what to cut. Sadly, Sovereign, Reaver, Annex and probably Archangel of Thune all are not going to make the cut. I don't run enough creatures for Archangel of Thune, Sovereign hasn't helped me enough, as I said I've only ever gotten the ability once, Norn's Annex is a bit costly for an effect that is printed on another card (granted, the restriction is nice, but not as important as in 20 card), and Drogskol Reaver either doesn't help me enough or forces my hand too often. After this change, I think the deck should be a bit more consistent and Necropotence less of an absolute need.

Thank you for your second opinion, I know what I need to do now.

My Oloro deck at MagicalHacker - Oloro, Ageless Ascetic (Esper) (as opposed to my mono white, mono black, or Orzhov Oloro decks) is more themes around lifegain shenanigans, but it is obvious that he is a great control commander too. So if the cards that are win cons in that deck don't appeal to you, then maybe some cards from my personal control deck will: Sphinx Outside The Box. Honestly, Medomai the Ageless wouldn't be a bad inclusion in this deck either, since he can help you skip the waiting period for Felidar Sovereign. Other than him, I really think that Test of Endurance and Celestial Convergence make for good win cons for a lifegain deck.

Hope I could help!

I used to have Medomai in here ages ago, he just never did anything, and the extra turn effect was usually unnecessary. I'd much rather run Beacon of Tomorrows and/or Time Warp, but I really, really dislike taking extra turns. As for Celestial Covergence, while I like it, it's very, very slow. Seven turns of making myself a target is not good in my opinion. I did look at your deck, and I do really like adding in maybe some planeswalkers, I mean I do have a Jace AOT sitting around (2, actually), but I'm known to just obsessively use his minus. Mini FOF is amazing. In fact, I might actually add him pretty soon here. Thanks!

Tell me, JA14732, since I did not test the deck myself, what turn does it kill on?

May 15, 2015 10:24 p.m.

JA14732 says... #10

This is a control deck. "What turn" it kills on means nothing, as it can (in theory) kill on turn 4 (with the PERFECT hand) but why would I do that? This deck slows down the pace of a game, prevents people from doing stupidly oppressive bullshit and winning from there after providing a fair (read: beneficial to me) and balanced (read: only I have anything of value) game.

If you want to know about Commander decks that kill quickly, I'd tip my hat to any and all Hermit Druid combo decks. Those usually go off turn 1-2 WITH combo protection.

Is Drogskol Reaver in just for the lifegain?

November 28, 2015 11:53 p.m.

JA14732 says... #12

Reaver is in it for the additional card draw. He gives me 2 cards for attacking, for blocking, 1 for an upkeep phase (or more, depending on what I've got in the field), has evasion, etc. I don't need the lifegain (though it's nice), I've got him to increase my efficiency.

Woah. This deck is just...strong. Don't see that very often.

How does the doomsday combo work in detail? Do you use a carddraw spell to draw all 5 cards at once?

March 28, 2016 11:25 a.m.

JA14732 says... #15

Doomsday is what I like to call a toolbox combo There's no 1 specific way to perform it, but I'll go over the common ways I pull it off in this deck.

First, you will need Lab Maniac, some form of countermagic (Force of Will, Pact of Negation, Swan Song, etc.) and any one or more of the following: Necropotence, Brainstorm, Alhammarret's Archive, Sensei's Divining Top, Sphinx's Revelation or Erebos, God of the Dead in order to perform this combo. If I don't have any one of these, I fetch and order these cards: Force of Will, Laboratory Maniac, Brainstorm, Pact of Negation and Solitary Confinement. If I can, I attempt to just play out the game, holding FoW, Lab Maniac and finally Brainstorming to draw what remains, using Force and Pact to protect the combo. I grab Solitary Confinement at the end because if my combo has failed, I'll sit myself in a corner.

If I have any one or more of the combo pieces, I Doomsday for the others and try to win from there.

Some tips: don't combo out if there's mana untapped. A smart player will simply counter or kill the Maniac. Don't Doomsday if an opponent will have lethal on you. Don't Doomsday if there's a mill player at the table. Play the combo smart and you'll succeed.

Ah, thank you for the explanation.By the way, I think Telepathy would be pretty good for this deck.It seems bad, but it's really good in any controllish type of deck, especially for securing the combo win.

March 29, 2016 12:07 p.m.

JA14732 says... #17

It's easily a good card, just not my first choice. I honestly prefer taking the risk and having to think a little bit more over knowing whether or not I can go off. It's more fun that way.

March 29, 2016 12:24 p.m.

Stillgone says... #18

Interesting. Playing telepathy often stimulates my brain to think more.

March 29, 2016 12:41 p.m.

JA14732 says... #19

Eh, it just feels a little too safe for my tastes.

Weird thing for a combo player to say, I understand, but since this is among the two most powerful EDH decks in my playgroup, playing more riskily is more fun for me, and all I would see with Telepathy is what EXACTLY I have to fetch with Doomsday to win. I enjoy taking risks, so I inherently put risks in.

Hooray for Esper!

I found that Exquisite Blood + Sanguine Bond was a little to pricey for a combo. Sure there are ways to cheat it out, but I find that cheaper is always better!

May I suggest replacing them with a Helm of Obedience combo?

JA14732 says... #21

I actually have Helm combo in another deck...probably will do the switch for early kills, but I prefer the Doomsday win instead.

Lands:

I think you can do away with Cabal Coffers. It doesn't help you much if you're in a rush to win since it requires Urborg, Tomb of Yawgmoth and at least two more lands to ramp. You might be better off using Land Tax to ensure you never miss land drops. It can also help you pay for Forbid's (you can run this in place of Dessertion or Cryptic Command) buyback cost. This also eliminates the need for Vesuva.

I'd also lose the temples since they generally slow you down. I'd go for pain lands since Oloro is able to mitigate the life loss and since your deck generally gives you enough life to spare for them.

Spells:

I'm not sure what your Doomsday pile is. Sharing it in your deck description would be nice.

You can replace Library of Leng with Thought Vessel.

I'm also unsure of Bitterblossom's purpose in the deck. You don't seem to run stax so I don't think you really need it. If it's there for pillowfort-ish reasons, I suggest using Propaganda or Ghostly Prison or both instead.

JA14732 says... #25

Megalomania, thanks for really good feedback. Most people I ask for feedback just leave some token "Sun Droplet?" comment or nothing at all.

I'll go over your recommendations one by one:

I have recently been thinking of cutting Coffers (doesn't really do that much), but I can't for the life of me think of anything to replace it (Mikokoro, Center of the Sea? Boseiju, Who Shelters All? Dark Depths, throw in my spare Thespian's Stage for the combo? Land Tax for my 5 basics? Try for 9/3/3 manabase?). Once I figure it out, I'll look into replacing it.

Also, I really have an undying and completely illogical hatred of Forbid (one of my first times ever playing Magic, I got softlocked by it and had no clue what was going on), so while it is potentially better than some counterspells in here, I refuse to run it. Excellent suggestion, wrong person.

Temples are really more of a meta pick. Despite what the deck looks like, my meta is...remarkably uncompetitive. You're looking at arguably the strongest deck in the playgroup, and no one else is looking to win anywhere close to fast, outside of a Prossh deck that needs a god hand to pull of a turn 4 win. While I probably could get away with painlands, generally the scry from the temples helps A LOT. On the fence a little here.

I really should have been more specific about my Doomsday pile, it's hidden somewhere in the wall of text known as my description. Also, I really should revamp that. Huh. Anyways, it's really nothing too special: Laboratory Maniac, Brainstorm and any number of cheap counters, like Force of Will, Pact of Negation, Swan Song, Misdirection etc.

I have a spare Vessel lying around somewhere, it's just a question of whether I prefer ramp or not having to discard from Solitary Confinement. Ramp is probably better. Probably switch soon.

As for Bitterblossom, it's in here because this deck gets a lot of hate. Having a free Will-o'-the-Wisp each turn that can also be used to tick down planeswalkers if I'm not attacked is pretty darn good, IMO. If you can think of a better card in here, I'm all ears. It'll just be sad to get rid of my foil 'blossom.

Thanks for your help!
