Match Report —Nov. 20, 2016

Only had time to play one match today.

This deck got completely outclassed by a deck using Omnath, Locus of Rage as its Commander.

Elementals started hitting the ground hard and fast and overran my Aliies before they had a chance to set themselves up.

This was due to two reasons:

  1. The Omnath deck hit all its manarocks early, and I have taken all mine out.

  2. I kept a hand where the first drop cost four. I usually don't keep a hand unless it has a couple of lands and a two or three drop.

My conclusion is that this deck can do OK in a fairly casual playgroup, but it is outclassed by most competitive decks.

If you've got Shared Animosity on the field and three Allies attacking, that's an extra 9 points of damage.

If you've got four Allies attacking, that's an extra 16 points.

Both of those equations make a huge difference in my playgroup.

I don't like Call to the Kindred as Creatures don't last long in my meta.

Long enough to get four on the field, but they will get wiped soon.

Hmm something like: Debtors' Knell or Primal Surge wouldn't be an option? Just pondering about your opinion :)

Aless55 I have no more room to squeeze in cards unless they meet the criteria for this deck, set out in the Description.

Yes I'am sorry, I posted my comment and the description changed after reloading the page;)

i think defense of the heart would be better than gideon's phalanx and if you're going to use boros charm and avacyn than a Armageddon would be good. Also i used all the Clone effects possible to double the effects of the better allies.

July 4, 2016 2:11 p.m.

Argy says... #6

I considered Armageddon but the likely hood of having it plus Boros Charm or Avacyn, Angel of Hope in my hand is slim.

All that Clone does is bring another Ally into play. Playing an actual Ally does that anyway, PLUS bring in another effect.

I'll think about Defense of the Heart.

Seems you forget that Clone or Clever Impersonator can copy opponent's creatures which could be extremely helpful and having options in EDH is one of the best bets to ensure you don't lose.

July 4, 2016 2:41 p.m.

Argy says... #8

You only talked about clones copying Allies.

Hence my response.

The suggestion is problematic in that I would have to take Creatures out to put some clones in.

I'm not taking out any Allies, as that would be counter productive.

If I copy a Non-Ally Creature an Opponent owns that is also counter productive to my strategy of getting as many Allies on the field as possible.

Well if you want to get a lot of allies onto the battlefield i'd suggest getting a ton of mana and a Genesis Wave but that can get pretty boring fast. Why not replace Drana's Emissary with a Tajuru Warcaller or Tajuru Beastmaster for a finisher?

HarroHunter says... #10

May I suggest an alternate strategy other than making your creatures indestructible to deal with opponents' removal? Why not take advantage of them putting your creatures in the graveyard and run cards like Living Death to try and go for a one turn KO with Hagra Diabolist or Halimar Excavator. You could even try out cards like Entomb. It's just an idea so take it with a grain of salt but maybe something worth considering.

July 4, 2016 3:43 p.m.

Argy says... #11

HarroHunter that's a tactic I've tried but unfortunately there is a lot of Graveyard hate in my meta.

Otherwise I would be running cards like Rally the Ancestors.

tlwdssd Genesis Wave is not a bad idea. What would you remove for it?

tlwdssd says... #12

I'd suggest taking Reconnaissance That Which Was Taken or Blade of Selves out for the g-wave

July 5, 2016 1:40 a.m.

Argy says... #13

Reconnaissance is too valuable. It lets me attack with losing any Creatures. Helps me to get damage through.

If you have a look at the last posts in the archive you'll see why Blade of Selves was included. The fact that it triggers Rally every time I attack is too good.

That Which Was Taken is one of the best ways I have of making my Creatures Indestructable.

Here we see the problem. It's easy to suggest cards, far more difficult to make room for them.

tlwdssd says... #14

Idk what speed your playgroup has but mine uses infinite combos so cards like those are far too slow and with g-wave you get alot more explosive so that which was taken seems less viable to me. Same with captains claws. Usually the game is over if i get a g-wave off for 10+

I'll keep it in mind.

How's the land base working out for you so far? I'm about to finaly build my version and I wanted to put in every Tri land, but you seem to run only a few.

July 5, 2016 5:26 a.m.

Argy says... #17

What are you talking about?

I run every single Tri land.

Use Amulet of Vigor to give them a chance to enter untapped.

I've only been colour screwed a couple of times, which is to be expected with five colours.

EpicFreddi says... #18

I'm an idiot, nevermind me. Counting isn't my strenght.

tlwdssd says... #19

I really am curious, why do you run drana's emissary over a tajuru warcaller or any other ally that has an ETB effect? Is it the 3cmc?

July 5, 2016 6:51 a.m.

Argy says... #20

You've come in at the end of a VERY long discussion.

It's the two colours on Drana's Emissary and that fact that she can block a flier.

The more colours in Allies on the field, the more +X/+X you get from General Taz's activated ability.

July 5, 2016 9:14 a.m.

Argy says... #21

You can read through the discussion that was had around building this deck, if you want to know why some of the cards and strategies were chosen for it.

It is ten pages long.

So it's probably been a conversation already but might I suggest getting some hexproof rather than just aiming for getting indestructible. I run a Karlov deck with a lot of just straight exile removal and I have a friend who runs Reaper King control with a lot of destroy effects and while indestructible deals with A LOT of removal, when something scary with hexproof shows up we just sorta look at eachother and go "well that's there now" And recently there's been a not insubstantial amount of ways to get around indestructible.

Thoughts would be Asceticism or Archetype of Endurance. Asceticism especially because regenerate and indestructible are very similar outside of boardwipes. So you could test how you feel with it.

Tazri only counts drana's emissary for her black because tazri adds the white herself so effectively its adding only a +1 with tazri out already, having Drana's Emissary in your deck rather than Tajuru Warcaller which is +2/+2 per ally that enters is more mana effecient because you are able to search up which allies you want reliably and the flying is too redundant for it to matter on just emissary. I'd consider that spot up for grabs for a different ally or g-wave.

July 5, 2016 5:35 p.m.

Argy says... #24

No.

I need all the fliers I can get in my meta.

The constant 1 life loss has also proven to be significant.

I like that Drana's Emissary is only 3CMC. I've changed my strategy to one of getting as many Allies on the field as possible.

I didn't see it if anyone suggested it but have you thought about one of my favorite commanders:Norin the Wary? With Conspiracy in play he'll pop all of your ETB effects once a turn, every turn albeit at the end and if no one cast a spell or attacked (but in Commander that is a rarity). He's cheap, a pain to kill, pretty lulz-worthy, and synergizes with a lot of your cards.

Not sure what to take out as your deck is pretty tight. Norin would definitely skew your mana curve in a little better direction and the Ondu Champion seems to offer a relatively superfluous ability.

Eldrazi Monument would fit two of your desires at once as well and exchange it for Levitation. At the cost of a token per turn and 1 more mana it's a steal.
