Deadeye Navigator begs to be in here. He's like a giant repeatable tool box

Looking at your deck and Maybeboard, I would suggest doing the following:

Remove:

Add in:

It will make the allies in the deck more synergic, allowing each one to effect all others. With the remaining cards that you would be removing, I would add in some tutor, ramp, and combo cards to fill it out. Ramp cards like Farseek, Mirari's Wake, Sol Ring, and the like. For Tutor, cards like Demonic Tutor and Diabolic Tutor. Some interesting combo cards are: Artificial Evolution, Conspiracy, Xenograft, and Progenitor Mimic. Some other good cards you could run are: Beastmaster Ascension, Clever Impersonator, and Kalitas, Traitor of Ghet

NinjaBunny01 the moment you suggested removing Door of Destinies was when I questioned your other suggestions.

That card is essential for this deck.

Naming "Ally" for it means, for example, that by the time I play a fifth Ally, all my other Allies get +5/+5.

If all those Allies are board wiped and I play another Ally, that one gets +6/+6.

Getting the picture of how good that card is?

I feel at the moment that I have waaay too many Wnchantments I really don't want to add more.

It's OK to have some cards that can copy, but I don't want too many of them.

At this stage I'm going to think about tutors.

I FINALLY worked out why Cloudshift and Nephalia Smuggler are good.

They can let me activate Rally on my turn.

Told ya I'd need things explained.

Putting those in along with some ramp, and taking out all my fetchlands.

I'm at the stage now where I have to start making some tough decisions to crop this deck down to size.

As much as I love all your suggestions, slagaflaga, they are the ones causing me the most problems in knowing what to cut for them.

As a consequence I think I will not be able to take any on board apart from Riku of Two Reflections. Maybe not even him.

I'm going to stick to as many Allies as possible, mostly just for flavour reasons now.

Yeah I considered him, Quicksilver.

Any suggestions as to what you would remove for him?

My biggest problem at the moment is cutting the last 4 cards.

Unless you can abuse the kicker (judging by the Mana Echoes, you probably can), probably Marshal's Anthem. Honor of the Pure is cheaper and more efficient outside of the second ability. Failing that, Umara Raptor, as it's cost is a bit much for a 1/1 that only impacts itself, or Makindi Patrol. Granted allies now effect all creatures on the field, but I feel even with that rally trigger, Brave the Sands is more effective. Just my opinion though.

Your opinion is VERY much appreciated, Quicksilver.

I have been having some similar thoughts, although I will stick with Makindi Patrol at this stage, mostly for flavour reasons.

The Raptor is gone.

Well I think this deck is going to hurt my head with all the different interactions it can have.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I hazard to guess that permanents don't stick around for very long in EDH.

How on earth do you people keep up with this "no maximum hand size" nonsense?

In my last test I had an Creature that let me draw a card for every other Ally on the field, and I had a LOT of Allies. I must've ended up with over forty cards in my hand.

Thanks for all your input, everyone. I think this is a fine tribute to General Tazri.

Okay, I'll offer a little perspective on how my meta works in regards to EDH:
- You are correct, permanents don't stick around for very long, with the exception of lands. This is one of many examples as to how powerful politics are in EDH; many players will not deal with land destroyers. Take everything else away if you must, but lands are sacred.
- Permanent destruction is as always part of two categories: spot removal, and wraths. In spot removal, staples include exiling, because indestructibility is wrong. Swords to Plowshares, Path to Exile and most recently Utter End are powerful reminders that your creatures are not welcome (looking at you, Blightsteel Colossus.)
- Ramp. If you think it's bad in standard or modern, this is an average first round play: land, Exploration, land, sol ring and signet. By turn 3 you are usually expected to have your commander on the field.
- Commanders. There are some commanders that are simply not worth playing because they often end with an infinite combo using two cards. Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Teysa, Orzhov Scion are such examples.
- Game style. You'll find, often quite unintentionally, that your deck will play completely differently from game to game. No matter what strategy you have, someone will a deck you'll have to adapt to, and sometimes that can mean playing the whole game with another approach.

Argeaux,
The deck looks really solid, congrats!

I finally did a deep look, and have only a few specific comments:

  • Angel of Renewal: I'm on the fence. Best in a token deck with a heavy lifegain theme, so won't be at her best. But she's a large flying Ally, so she'll never be bad. Just not sure if she's good enough for a 6-drop slot.
  • Beastcaller Savant: I'm not sure about this one. His haste is nice, but I don't like the conditional piece. Maybe Birds of Paradise instead?
  • Drana's Emissary: May not be worth the slot. Incidental lifegain is worth less in Commander than other formats, because the starting total is so much higher. Maybe a Skyrider Elf instead?
  • Ally Encampment for your mainboard?
  • Speaking of land, I'm sure you've playtested the heck out of it, but your land count seems really low. For an average CMC of 3.73 and a 5-drop Commander, I'd expect 37 or more.

One broad thought: I'm not sure how much of the deck you already have/can easily trade for vs. how much you have to buy. But I've found that whatever I have for initial budget, I end up spending ~half again as much over the next few months as I gain real-world experience with a deck and the meta shifts around. I always wish I held off or asked about proxying some of the expensive-and-perhaps-iffy cards.

Good luck (and good skill!) with the deck!

Also, Cavern of Souls maybe?

January 11, 2016 8:47 a.m.

Argy says... #17

clayperce yeah, I was a bit iffy about Angel of Renewal and Drana's Emissary myself. I mostly had them in for their Flying, which I won't always be able to Rally on my Opponent's turn.

I will try removing them for more land, including Cavern of Souls.

I've been basing this deck heavily on another Allies EDH deck which runs 33 land, so we will see how 34 goes.

Beastcaller Savant will help with the lower land count. I am keeping him in because I have a lot of experience with Allies and you just can't beat another chance to activate Rally.

Badaro says... #18

  • Blade of Selves does absurd things when combined with Allies.
  • Cloudstone Curio is degenerate in this deck. With Tazri you can cast her, tutor a creature, cast the creature, get Tazri back, cast her to tutor another creature... while triggering rally non-stop. It goes infinite with Harabaz Druid, Jwari Shapeshifter and a haste enabler like Chasm Guide. And is good with any ETB creature (which you have plenty).
  • Turntimber Ranger goes infinite with Xenograft or Conspiracy.
  • Mimic Vat and Soul Foundry are other options to give you ETB triggers every turn.

Badaro what would you remove for these cards? I'm finding it more and more difficult to make substitutions, so perhaps you could help me?

I must admit that I've never really enjoyed playing infinite combos.

I feel that I'd have to completely change the direction of this deck to make your suggestions work, which I'm happy to test, but I can't work out which cards to replace.

Soo.. right after she was spoiled, I bought all the Allies in foil. Guess this will be my life project - completly foiling out this EDH. (I'm already crying when I look at the price of a foil Scalding Tarn. :D )

January 12, 2016 4:32 a.m.

Argy says... #21

EpicFreddi it's funny, the more I play Magic the less I buy foil cards.

In fact I hate foils in decks I have put a lot of work into and that I feel are competitive.

I will play with them in Standard if I have cracked them, but that's about it.

An exception is my Commander / Tiny Leader, so at this stage General Tazri is the only card for this deck that I am going to foil.

EpicFreddi says... #22

It's just that the price difference was only 20 at that point so I went for it. :D

Argy says... #23

Oh yeah, not criticising. Just musing.

Who knows, if this deck becomes precious to me I might just foil the whole thing.

I already have some of the Tri lands in foil.

Lack of Flying Creatures has proven to be problematic for this deck.

As a result I've removed Kor Bladewhirl and Firemantle Mage, who I think work better in an aggro Standard deck, and replaced them with Levitation and Akroma's Memorial.

I can tutor for these cards, if need be.

The colours for this deck are starting to become more balanced, with being less dominant and more being added. I think that is a good way to go.
