Slow... Stop... Breathe. Speed up again. You have all the time in the world, relax. You know your wit is greater than theirs. You wield time itself in the palm of your hand. How could your opponents possibly best you?

Will you draw out their suffering into the infinite?

Wielding time can be a powerful tool... It takes a sophisticated and adept Wizard to master the strategy of time. Here we will best our opponents with wit and cunning. We can control their play with our counters and we will take all the extra turns we want. Manipulating draw, spells, turns, and time itself will be the key to our decks victory.

After a hiatus with my favourite colour - and favourite gimmick - I have returned to reconstruct my Teferi, Temporal Archmage Wizard tribal EDH deck. Before the deck seriously suffered in all sorts of play... I relied far too heavily on card draw acceleration and had far too few instants. Ultimately, rushing Laboratory Maniac was effective, but completely non-interactive and unfun... just plain boring.

On this time around, much to the dismay of my friend group, I shall revisit my beloved fun and interactive play style of control via counterspells. I always struggled to make counterspells work as well in EDH, but I believe it is because I didn't quite commit to it like I have now. Finally my Wizzys are back in classic spell-slinging fashion!

Strategy of the Deck

Teferi is intending to irritate and annoy others with strict time control. Taking many extra turns and counterspell spell-slinging will lead us to victory when we combo off into infinite time, infinite draw, infinite turns... or the infinite itself.

An essential part of our control strategy will be counterspells. We will seek to constantly interfere with our opponents plans, denying them at every opportunity. We want to shut down every advantage they have, be it an early Annul to counter their early mana rocks, or a later play of Rewind to keep shutdown on without tapping ourselves out. Elimination of any spells that pose some advantage over our strategy is something we are aiming for.

Counterspells:

in addition to our spell-slinging arsenal of counterspell instants, we want some steady counterspell presence in order to recur our denial. Predominantly for commander (or combo-piece) shutdown we can employ Declaration of Naught to target a particular nasty card we may see again and again.

Additionally we want to utilize our wizards who can recur our instants for us. Elite Arcanist and Kaho, Minamo Historian are both going to help us make sure we always have some of our instants present at our disposal, even if they're not in our hand. While we will probably always want them slinging counterspells, we should not forget that we can also use them to recur Mystical Tutor and fetch our counterspells - a roundabout but extremely viable (and sometimes preferable) solution.

We can leverage all of the above in order to keep our denial systems flowing and frustrations rising.

As you've no doubt noticed, a major sub-theme of the deck is time. I love the theme of time and it is partly why I'm so drawn to Teferi, Temporal Archmage as wizzy-in-chief. I've made a major portion of the deck dedicated to time themeing - mostly revolving around taking extra turns. Fortunately, as a sub-theme, taking extra turns happens to be extremely useful in Magic and especially helpful in accelerating Teferi's combo in particular.

The break down of the time-themed cards can be viewed as 1) Extra Turn Cards; 2) Time-themed Utility Cards; and 3) the Flavour-Add Card.

The Extra Turn Cards are:

The Time-themed Utility Cards:

And finally the Flavour-Add:

While Time Ebb is pretty much brutally worse than several other cards, I just can't bring myself to let go of a card whose title fits the theme so well.

Also a side note: while Plea for Power may be able to be considered a extra-turn card, in practice I've never found my opponents willing to let this be the case. Hence the utility classification.

Credit in advance to this thread that enlightened me on the mechanics of this combo.

The way we will capture victory will be through the known infinite combo utilizing The Chain Veil. Please read through the thread above for the mechanics as I won't be iterating it (I will only do a poorer job of it).

With infinite mana at our disposal we have multiple options for victory. I find the most common will be Enter the Infinite + Laboratory Maniac, or Prosperity + Laboratory Maniac. I prefer Enter the Infinite since it just feels more flavourful considering the other themes running through the deck.

If there is something to point out, it is that we have added viability to getting our combo out and in place by giving ourselves breathing room - or breathing time - with the abundant extra turns. I think the combo and the time theme compliment each other, both mechanically and in terms of flavour. It isn't meant to be the cruelest competitive Teferi, Temporal Archmage combo deck in all of EDH, just my time-themed fun spin on the concept. The combo plus the theme are really what bring this deck together as the embodiment of what I love about Magic.

Our goal will always be to to open up infinite time to achieve our goals. We will brew together all of our card draw and make sure we are razor focused on controlling the opponents in such a frustratingly slow way that we are guaranteed to roll out our extra turns and our daunting combos. With our wit and dedication we will surely seize victory - and we will take all the time in the world to get there.
