The Budget Modern Series involves decks that are built to compete in the Modern format, but without the high cost often associated with top tier decks. Decks in this series will cost less than $100 on average.
Tempered Affinity plays out similar to the traditional Affinity archetype but relies on capitalizing on
Tempered Steel
to overwhelm the opponent. This version of Affinity plays three Master of Etherium in addition to four Etched Champion to improve the deck's ability to overpower the opponent's board state. Although this comes at the cost of speed and resilience relative to the traditional Affinity list, Tempered Affinity benefits from being more explosive.
Here's a sample play:
Turn 1: Play Darksteel Citadel and tap it to cast Springleaf Drum. Play Memnite and use it in conjunction with Springleaf Drum to play
Vault Skirge
, paying two life.
Turn 2: Play Seachrome Coast and cast Ornithopter. Play Cranial Plating and tap Ornithopter in conjunction with Springleaf Drum to equip it to Vault Skirge. Attack for 8 damage, gaining 7 life in the process.
Turn 3: Play Plains and cast Master of Etherium. Attack with the Vault Skirge, Memnite, and Ornithopter for 12 damage, gaining 9 life in the process.
Turn 4: Play
Tempered Steel
. Attack for 28, gaining 11 life in the process (i.e. Master of Etherium is 10/10, Vault Skirge is 11/4, Memnite is 4/4, and Ornithopter is 3/5). Win.
