Maybeboard

EXTREME BUDGET: ONLY $25 WITHOUT LANDS

This list has been inspired by a video by TCGPlayer. The original setup looked very convoluted to me and I decided to try to streamline it as much as possible. I chose to give a very detailed explanation here because, being such a fresh combo, other players might want to see the logic behind every card and perhaps choose differently or adapt to other formats.

COMBO SETUP:

Teshar, Ancestor’s Apostle, Bontu's Monument and Yahenni, Undying Partisan on the board. Ornithopter on the graveyard or hand. Scrap Trawler on the graveyard or hand. If Teshar is online, one can pull the other from the grave if needed. Once all 5 pieces are online, the loop is doable. You may want to hold onto enough mana for a counterspell before going off.

LOOP:

  1. Sac Ornithopter to Yahenni, Undying Partisan;
  2. Sac Scrap Trawler, dig back Ornithopter;
  3. Cast Ornithopter, triggering Teshar, Ancestor’s Apostle to get Scrap Trawler into the field;

Each loop triggers Bontu's Monument, and can be demonstrated to repeat infinitely.

Alternatively, any sac outlets can be used in place of Yaheeni, and any passive "when creature/artifact/historic etbs/dies/is cast" triggers can be used instead of Bontu's. Being standard, we are not exactly over-served in either category, but there are some other interesting choices, some included for redudancy and some not (but explained):

  • Rhonas's Monument instead of Bontu's: Pump any/all of the creatures involved and swing for lethal. Preferably Yaheeni due to indestructible and haste (allowing you to cast him only when you are ready to go off). It's also redundancy against Dispossess and allows for piece-meal damage with Yaheeni while we are setting up. However, it doesn't make Yaheeni cheaper to cast and can be slowed by prison/tax/damage-denial effects, so it's an objectively worse wincon.
  • Diligent Excavator instead of Bontu's: Mills your opponent, costs 1 less and can also be reanimated with Teshar. However it's very fragile to removal.

Maybes:

  • Workshop Assistant instead of the Trawler: Redundancy. It's much less useful if the combo is broken and you need to improvise.
  • Oketra's Monument instead of Bontu's: Speeds up by making Teshar cheaper, but has a wincon that can be hosed with board wipes or tax/prison effects.
  • Mox Amber, Karn, Scion of Urza: I'm not made of money, dude. The mox does allow for the combo to become an infinite mana one.

Relevant absences:

  • Defiant Salvager instead of Yaheeni (not included): Save 25 bucks but loses speed (not tutorable with Board the Weatherlight) and evasion (no indestructible). But if you want to run the Mox you need it to get the loop going.
  • Walking Ballista instead of Ornithopter (not included): Makes the deck 50 bucks more expensive and loses early blocking capability. Only pointing it out because it's originally in the TCGPlayer list.
  • Aetherflux Reservoir instead of Bontu's (not included): Costs 1 more mana (and 5 more bucks), but can target a creature. Not relevant as there is no Platinum Angel in Standard.

Suggestions

Updates Add

IN 1x Workshop Assistant

OUT 1x Diligent Excavator

Protects from Dispossess, and the Assistant's ability allows us to dig back the monuments if needed. 3 Excavators seems quite enough as it's perhaps the most fragile wincon and it's exhumable with Teshar.

Sideboard:

IN 1x Duress 1x Solemnity

OUT 2x Vraska's Contempt

Moved into "Maybeboard > Budget". Didn't notice how expensive it was.
