Thassa, God of the Sea Commander

Commander / EDH* Mono-Blue

Maybeboard

Casual EDH deck built around Thassa, God of the Sea. For this deck, I went all-out for flavor. It's all sea monsters, merfolk, & elementals dominating the board.

Basically the plan is simple. There are some low cost creatures to get a board presence up, such as Chasm Skulker, Cosi's Trickster, Sigiled Starfish, Shorecrasher Elemental, and Streambed Aquitects. From there, ramping up with Gauntlet of Power, Caged Sun, Nykthos, Shrine to Nyx, and the various mana rocks helps you get to your heavy hitters, while Thassa herself helps you filter your draws to get what you want. Once you have a mana presence, the big guns can come out. Colossal Whale, Inkwell Leviathan, Lorthos, the Tidemaker, Pearl Lake Ancient, and Tromokratis are among the stars in this regard.

Winning comes from a variety of tricks to clear the way for your monsters. The cleanest & most effective is to bounce everything back to their owner's hands, using cards like Scourge of Fleets, Thousand Winds, Displacement Wave, Aether Gale, Distorting Wake, Inundate, Cyclonic Rift, or the very flavorful Whelming Wave. A second plan of attack involves tapping down the opponent, using Breaching Leviathan, Brine Elemental, or Blustersquall. The final plan relies on making your creatures unblockable. Many of the monsters have islandwalk, so turning your opponents' lands into islands using Sealock Monster, Spreading Seas, Aquitect's Will, or the very funny Quicksilver Fountain can give you free access to hit unobstructed. Deepchannel Mentor achieves the same effect all in one go, and is a fantastic late-game bomb. A final potential win-con comes from blue devotion veteran, Master of Waves, and swarming your opponent.

This deck can be vulnerable to removal, so having a few counterspells on hand is essential. The biggest danger is having your creatures removed as fast as you can play them, and never getting the opportunity to develop a board presence. Critical mass is the name of the game, so playing carefully and without making too many enemies is essential to staying alive.

Like I said, this deck is all about flavor and fun, but it can pack a whallop if left unchecked.
