Why? Show

Fish Hulk is scary, and many decks are geared toward denying the perceived best combo in the format. While similar combo decks are finding high ground vs each other and anti-combo, we can execute our gameplan to stack our hand and take more relevant game actions with our surplus mana. Tatyova is rarely a pressing threat so it’s often safe to jam early and accumulate draw triggers. This list is unique in its ability to run both Cursed Totem as well as Null Rod with little sacrifice. Generally speaking, our aim is to stabilize the board and ride the value train with land drops until a safe combo can be assembled.

Less-Obvious Core Cards Show

36 lands. I wouldn’t run fewer than this. 38 is a reasonable number I’d like to test, especially if there are utility pieces such as Tabernacle included. Once you land an exploration effect, you’ll find the number less excessive.

Trade Routes. Our best midgame value machine. Replay your Mystic Sanctuary every turn to reuse counters, removal, etc. Also wins the game with Time Warp. The cycling ability comes in handy when Tatyova isn’t in play. With Burgeoning, you can respond by bouncing a land and continue to gain absurd Tatyova value on your opponents’ turns.

Baral, Sapphire Medallion, Lotus Cobra, Mana Vault. These allow our Ghostly Flicker loops to be mana-neutral or positive, explained in the next section. No need to hold them in hand; they often serve as useful ramp spells in the early game. Mystic Sanctuary. This is the most important card. It combos, recurs relevant spells, and can be found with blue fetchlands. Our island count respects the power of this card, and we get the added bonus of surviving Blood Moon better than most decks.

Crucible of Worlds/Ramunap Excavator. Once you’re playing multiple lands a turn, you soon wish you had access to more. Playing these effects unlock several card draw triggers from Tatyova with a single fetchland. In long games you may run out of targets, but it’s still okay to crack, fail to find, and replay for another draw trigger.

Combos Explained Show

Our primary wincon is a Ghostly Flicker loop, which needs a cost reducer, Tatyova, and Mystic Sanctuary.

Pay for Flicker with Sanctuary and any other land, blinking those lands.

This will cause one trigger from Sanctuary and two from Tatyova. Stack your triggers to get your Flicker on top of library, then draw Flicker + one more card.

You are back where you started, except you have gained 2 life and drawn one card deeper in your library. The usual goal from here is to put a Sunscorched Desert into play. You may need to cast an exploration effect to do this, crop rotation, etc.

A similar Flicker loop can now be used on Mystic + Desert to repeatedly ping our opponents.

The safe line is Sanctuary → Noxious, then Noxious → Flicker before the second draw trigger. Since Tatyova grants you 2 life per loop, you are able to pay life each time.

If Noxious Revival is unavailable, you can still resolve your first Tatyova trigger to draw your Flicker, and cast Flicker in response to the second draw trigger. You now win with lethal draw triggers on the stack! If your library has more cards than the life totals of potential Angel’s Grace opponents, be mindful to execute enough loops to exactly kill them first. You will be able to reattempt this loop on the next upkeep.

The biggest sacrifice in deck slots is the colorless land, since Sapphire Medallion and friends function as ramp spells. Ghostly Flicker can convert your excess mana into repeatable card draw with a Mystic Sanctuary in play. Not the greatest, but not completely dead.

Alternate lines:

Time Warp + Mystic Sanctuary + bounce effect Note that you eventually will need to remove Tatyova so that your only draw is your rebought Time Warp. On your infinite turns, Cyclonic Rift clears the way for any creature or Field of the Dead to deal lethal combat damage.

Ghostly Flicker on Sanctuary + Mana Vault will generate infinite colorless mana. That colorless mana can then be filtered into colored mana by Flickering a colored land and Sanctuary. With infinite mana assembled, Mystic Sanctuary and Eternal Witness can be Flickered to get back the Flicker and any other card from your graveyard. Reality Shift to put the opponents’ libraries in exile. Forbidden Orchard can give you a target if need be.
