That's an awfully nice Ormendahl you got there...

Standard* GU (Simic) Ramp Theme/Gimmick

Hello, and Welcome, to my take out a traditional G/x ramp build! Originally just a theoretical ideal shell for Altered Ego , the deck ended up performing surprisingly well and became my favourite ever standard deck. It works on the same general basis as most other ramp decks, but utilises blue instead of red, which gives me access to a host of day-ruining counterspells, along with Kiora, Master of the Depths and Altered Ego . What this means is that even if you durdle a little at the start, you are able to disrupt your opponent's best plays, which buys enough time to hit critical mass. On the whole, the deck is anywhere from slightly to hugely favoured in all matchups other than GW tokens, which it loses to horribly (tokens and planeswalkers are the two biggest weaknesses).

The green choices are fairly standard for a ramp deck, so these are just the U or GU cards in the main board:

Altered Ego , here in it's ideal world, is sadly still only good in a few matchups. Saying that, when it is good, it's a winner. Making a gigantic Ormendahl or slamming down a Dragonlord Silumgar (yay legend rule) is back breaking. EDIT: moved Altered Ego to the sideboard to improve matchup against aggressive decks.

The mainboard counterspell of choice is Clash of Wills , simply because it's a catch-all counterspell that's good in both the early game (X=1 just feels rude) and the late game.

Kiora, Master of the Depths was mainly included for the flavour originally, but does brilliantly here and is a part of all dream starts. I might go up to three.

As I'm still working on the sideboard, I'd love some help deciding on the 15. Negate and Horribly Awry are decided upon, along with Sylvan Advocate , but the rest are fairly loose.

Anyway, thanks for reading, hope this has inspired you to make a twist on a popular deck, or to build something around a cool but overlooked card. Feel free to +1, and make sure to comment if you have an improvement.

Did some more testing with Sylvan Advocate in the main and it's now a lot more stable game 1 against aggressive decks - excellent suggestion, thanks.

Wonderful to hear that Dragonlord Silumgar is becoming increasingly popular in standard, as the higher the chance of winning a game with Altered Ego the better.

9 Sideboard slots are locked (3x Negate, Horribly Awry, Altered Ego) but I have no idea what to use the last 6 for. Considering some sort of anti-GW tokens stuff such as including 1 off basics mainboard and having sideboard Woodland Wanderers and Skyrider Elfs - just as turn 3 beaters that can easily pressure planeswalkers. A turn 3 4/4 flyer or a turn 3 6/6 trample are both capable of taking down either Nissa, Voice of Zendikarfoil or Gideon, Ally of Zendikar. Any other thoughts over how to deal with walekrs would be nice as I don't really want to attack the manabase with these basics.
