Keranos, God of Storms brings quality, low cost Lightning Bolts to all Americans!

"Why can't I just eat my waffle?"
-Barack Obama

I used to play Zedruu the Greathearted casually in EDH, but as soon as I saw this guy I knew who was gonna be my new best friend. Keranos, God of Storms provides so much value over the course of a game even if it doesn't turn on, but turning him on means you always have a backup plan of just beating face if things get grindy.

Keranos, God of Storms does a good job of getting rid of annoying smaller creatures and planeswalkers, so we can focus our removal to deal with things that Lightning Bolt can't.

Between devotion heavy enchantments like Future Sight and creatures like Dominus of Fealty, turning on Keranos is a breeze, and having built in indestructible means once he gets in play he probably isn't going anywhere any time soon. Another interesting part of Keranos is that you can relatively easily control when you want him to become a creature, and thus avoid nearly all removal, barring something like an Oblivion Ring or All Is Dust. Plus, he won't attract nearly as much hate as Melek or Niv-Mizzet would in a group, since his ability is a lot less threatening and much more resilient.

I do have a budget, so more expensive cards like Scalding Tarn and Volcanic Island are off the table for me. I would definitely prefer not to spend over $30 on a card so keep that in mind when making suggestions. Sideboard is cards that I plan to get at some point, maybeboard is for cards I'm considering running/have run in the past.

Wincons include:

  • Mizzix's Mastery for all the spells. Goes great with Talrand, Sky Summoner or Guttersnipe.
  • Suiting up a creature with Runechanter's Pike. Especially effective in tandem with Rogue's Passage/Cyclonic Rift and my commander. Batterskull can also sometimes get the job done, but is mainly here because I have no other way of gaining life.
  • Casting Omniscience (not a wincon in itself, but it becomes very difficult to lose at this point).
  • Taking lots of extra turns with Time Stretch/Time Warp/ Temporal Mastery and beating face. This is my usual route to victory. Note that I almost never go infinite, taking 2 or 3 turns in a row is more than enough usually. However, Acheaomancer and Riptide Laboratory can go infinite with an extra turn spell.

  • Some tips:

Scroll Rack is very strong in this deck, allowing you to manipulate the top of your deck to always get the desired trigger off of Keranos, God of Storms, as well as setting up a Temporal Mastery

We have a small Muddle the Mixture toolbox at our disposal in this deck. Generally, if I'm not expecting counterspells or Tooth and Nail from my opponent I will transmute for something. Some good targets include:

Since we're only running 2 colors, we can afford to run more colorless lands than most 3 color deck would safely be able to at our budget. Tolaria West and Expedition Map can fetch up whatever land you need in a given situation.
