I know you mentioned Melek, Izzet Paragon pulling hate as a general but have you considered running him as one of the 99?

I would, but my friend actually expressed an extreme hatred for the card itself. So for now at least, it's going to have to stay out. I will ask him if he's opposed to it being in the 99 though first. If it were to go in, what would you take out?

To be honest, Psychosis Crawler would be a good swap out choice. other than with Blue Sun's Zenith , it doesn't bring anything overly special to the deck. It will just draw you agro (well thats what happens in my experience at least).

Good call. I had it in here because of a goofy Enter the Infinite combo, but I decided to take it out shortly after. I'll make the switch, my friend can get over it >:D

Thats the spirit :P thats the trick with this kind of deck. It's much more of a good stuff deck than a combo deck. So the pieces you put in need to all server a purpose with the rest of the cards.

Also, Boseiju, Who Shelters All could be a good card. I run a Melek, Izzet Paragon deck (which I am looking to put Keranos, God of Storms in once I can get my hands on one) which might help as far as some ideas go:

That's a pretty nifty land! I'll see if I can get a hold of one.

Since you have Furnace of Rath why not Dictate of the Twin Gods ?

May 6, 2014 4:17 p.m.

Araganor says... #8

psychoza: Nice idea! I don't actually have Furnace of Rath yet, and I totally forgot about that card from JOU. The only downside is that it doesn't offer as much devotion. However, I think that the flash more than makes up for it! I'll make the switch.

With so many multitarget X spells, not running Battlefield Thaumaturge feels like a missed opprotunity.

ExplodingLobster: Crap! Why do I keep missing all this awesome JOU stuff? Would you suggest dropping Goblin Electromancer for Battlefield Thaumaturge ?

Here's a handful of suggestions:

Eidolon of the Great Revel : Pinging for playing low cost cards, and 2 devotion for Keranos.

Mirror Sheen : An awesome izzet card that'll make opponents think twice before targeting you

Nucklavee : Get some instants and sorceries back

Spellbound Dragon : Nifty little flyer to get some damage in

Stitch in Time : Extra turns are always nice

Swerve : Great NOPE card.

I like this a lot to be honest. If you really want some more topdeck control, I'd say look into Sensei's Divining Top and Scroll Rack . That is if you wanna spend an arm and a leg on this deck. Mystical Tutor and Personal Tutor would also be helpful at topdeck manipulation, then again depends on your price range.

Lastly if you wanna be a douche, Counterbalance is a good card when you have a lot of topdeck manipulation.

Overall cool deck, looks fun. +1

You could look into ugprading Darksteel Ingot into Chromatic Lantern . It will help with a lot of your mana fixing. Also, I've found Terrain Generator is awesome good.

Great suggestions everyone!

@AmazingCacti:

Not a fan of Eidolon, since it hurts me as well.

Mirror Sheen is interesting, but seems kind of niche.

I considered Nucklavee , but Archaeomancer and Charmbreaker Devils work well enough for recursion. His body with his cost is honestly pretty lackluster. If it had flying I would probably go for it though.

Spellbound Dragon , now that's one I haven't seen yet. Will definitely consider and test.

I don't like Stitch in Time personally, spending 3 mana with a chance of doing absolutely nothing just doesn't bode well with me for some reason. Very cool card though, if I copied it a few times I would probably get at least one extra turn.

Swerve is really cool! It gets bonus points for being fetchable with Firemind's Foresight too. What would you take out for it?

@Smeethinator: Thanks a lot man, this deck has been a blast so far in playtesting. I can't wait till I can sleeve this up! Believe me, if I had any copies of the top or rack I would be running em, but I can't justify the cost when something like Soothsaying does the job just as well, and potentially even better with extra mana. The same goes for the tutors, I just don't want to invest that much in this deck until I get the whole thing put together. Counterbalance is so wacky. A perfect example of a card that seems unplayable in a standard format but then is suddenly playable (and annoying as hell) when you throw in a Soothsaying or Brainstorm . I'm not sure I want to be "that guy" though XD

@enpc: Actually, in this deck I think that Darksteel Ingot is a better choice personally. Since I only have to worry about 2 colors I don't have very many problems with mana, and the indestructible on Ingot is nice when you have Austere Command s flying around on the board. I will try out that Terrain Generator though, it looks pretty sweet on paper.

Maybe Remand ? The card draw is nice, but I'm not a fan of just returning the spell to the hand.

Araganor says... #16

Good point, spell bouncing is fairly lackluster in EDH. I will test it out soon.

May 6, 2014 8:54 p.m.

Niroh says... #17

Remand is less about the counter and more for the draw though. It lets you stall for time, or disrupt a combo until the person's next turn. And since you know it's coming, anyone else playing will be setting up to take it down.

Pongify would add another Rapid Hybridization effect. Aftershock and maybe Fissure could be good too. I playtest a lot your deck versus my Mimeoplasm Deck and if you didn't counterspell a big creature as soon as it is cast, your deck have a hard time to destroy them. Of course, you got some direct damage but thats not always enough to destroy really big creature. I would play Hinder instead of Dissolve or Arcane Denial because you can counter a commander more effectively with it. Adding more card like Control Magic could help too but I'm not sure what I would cut for it...
Your deck is good overall and is really budget. I think you figure out correctly the number of land and instant/sorcery for your deck. Too many people doesn't put enough source of mana. Some mana accelerator could help your deck but you shouldn't cut too much instant or sorcery for it. I don't know for you but I was never able too put six counter on Archmage Ascension even when I draw extra card with Keranos. Sometime it got destroy before getting six counter, some other time I wasn't able at all to put 6 counter on it or the game ended before it.

Thanks for showing me Aftershock . That is such an amazing card for EDH, non-damage based removal is so hard for red to come by. I dropped my Blast of Genius for it.

Regarding Dissolve , Im running that instead of Hinder because I already have Dissolve readily available. Call me cheap I guess :)

I'm also going to drop Archmage Ascension , I have noticed that it just takes too long for it to become relevant in a game. I'm replacing it with Rhystic Study , since I just recently picked one of them up IRL.

Spellheart Chimera would shine in this deck

To further Soularm's comment, Grab the Reins is one of my absolute favourite control cards. Sure its expensive, but its super flexible too. Its a threaten and its always fun to throw one attacking creature at another attacking creature.

May 18, 2014 8:46 p.m.

Araganor says... #22

Thanks for the suggestions! I'm not opposed to Spellheart Chimera , but I feel like it's a little slow and vulnerable. I'll give it a try though.

Grab the Reins is really cool! You could use someone else's creature to block for you, or fling your creature at someone else's in response to removal. I'll definitely look for an opening, any suggestions on what to drop?

Personally I would take out Echo Mage for it. I think he is just going to get too focused. He's awesome and usually awesome creatures have a habit of exploding. I mean its no Lighthouse Chronologist but :P. That or Memory Lapse . That way you are swapping an answer for an answer.

May 19, 2014 7:41 p.m.

Araganor says... #24

OK, that's a fair point enpc. I'm personally too fond of Echo Mage to drop em, but I will keep it in mind.

I have dropped Reiterate in favor of Cyclonic Rift . Rift does more overall, and is a great tool to fetch up with Firemind's Foresight , whereas Reiterate sat in my hand far too many times since I rarely used its buyback effectively. The ability to EoT Foresight, then bounce their board on your turn and get in with everything is huge, plus you can grab a Dissolve to back it up!
