@KrazyCaley, I conducted many games today and the one (rather 4) cards I never sided in were the Izzet Charm . I lost to three aggro decks, which I already knew would happen. I lost to the Esper deck 4 out of 6 games. I played two mid-range decks and two other control decks and won all games. I feel my weakest point here was the mill and discard game. It became a war of attrition in which I lost.

i think that your land base is good enough without the Chromatic Lantern s, especially if you replace two or more swamps with Drowned Catacomb s and in their place I think that you could use some card advantage ex: Think Twice

I also think that Dissipate is a better mainboard counter spell thanCounterflux .

Think Twice is a possibility. Chromatic Lantern could be the likely drop. However, I'm not dropping the three Swamp out of my land-base unless I also drop Liliana of the Dark Realms . If I did that, I'd want to replace her with Liliana of the Veil which would also make me want to run Mystic Retrieval ... Kind of a conundrum for me there...

@KrazyCaley, I was wondering if you'd suggest dropping one Liliana of the Veil in favor of one Chromatic Lantern ? I have yet to play-test the renewed list extensively in my meta....

If you're going to put in mana, I'd put in a land before you put in a Chromatic Lantern , but I generally support the notion that you need more mana.

What to drop? The choices are so hard...

I'd drop a Chromatic Lantern for another Dragonskull Summit . I also think you should run Snapcaster Mage over Mystic Retrieval , but that might be a money problem.

Augur of Bolas would also be a strong card here as well and Mutilate for a board wipe, in addition to Mizzium Mortars .

Izzet Staticaster is an absolute brick wall against aggro and deserves a spot in your sideboard. As is, you seem to be over-sideboarding.

In what way do you mean I'm over-sideboarding?

For instance, 3x Devour Flesh and 3x Essence Scatter . Both are great cards against Bant Hexproof and aggro decks, but trying to side in both on top of anything else you might need for a given match up? You could drop the number of Counterflux down and move them all to your sideboard, move Devour Flesh or Essence Scatter to the mainboard, then throw in some Vampire Nighthawk or Izzet Staticaster .

Right now I'm wondering how this deck deals with Junk Rites. It looks like it has a really strong game two against any control or aggro, but lacks against Midrange.

May 10, 2013 4:40 a.m.

For sideboard, I'd suggest dropping the essence scatters for 3 Appetite for Brains .

Also, Augur of Bolas Is really a great card.Counterflux What does counterflux really do for this deck that Syncopate could not do? Syncopate can be a turn 2 counterspell against aggro decks, Counterflux can't be countered. Okay...Counterflux should be a sideboard against Control, not mainboard. Its colorscheme is too annoying, and it does nothing syncopate and dissipate can't do.

Thanks to all for the input. You've given me a lot to think about tonight...

Unfortunately I do not have Snapcaster Mage , and I've tried Augur of Bolas and whiffed more often than not. I may consider the Izzet Staticaster as a sideboard option, more to come on that later I think...

Here's my only argument to the counterspells... I have a lot of critter-hate already mainboard, and some good answers sideboard. The counterspells assist me in controlling the opponents relevant plays after I've successfully stalled him/her past turn 3+... Counterflux is a mainstay for me because it has put in a lot of work in the past for this deck. Syncopate is a possibility that I've tried and ditched multiple times due to its unreliability late-game... However, I'll take a second look and see what I could change about that...

Again, thanks for the input, it means a lot and I've got some things to think about. Unfortunately, I will not be entering this list into the tourney tomorrow (it's already 2200 here) since I feel unsure of how it'll do... Who knows? I may be told tomorrow that I SHOULD have entered it!

I would recommend taking out mystic ret for snap caster mages ( if you have them) surgical extraction would be a good card to include so if you kill say .. a vampire nighthawk than you could clear their deck out of them this works will spells and planeswalkers to so it can really help along with revealing the persons hand and library so you can see any potential surprises that may come up. Ral the new planes walker may be a great win condition as well. Tamiyo the moon sage wouldnt be bad either.

I'm trying to keep this a Standard deck, and please read my previous comment before posting about Snappy...

Counterflux is not intended to be main boarded.

@2zettaslow. I'm going to start deleting every comment you post that has no constructive criticism. Telling me a card is not intended to be mainboarded without telling me what changes you would make and WHY does nothing for me.

i would think you would be smart enough to know any other counter spells that cost three mana.....

This deck looks like a lot of fun! Even if it wasn't good, +1 for Avenged Sevenfold!

Thank you! It has become my Casual Standard deck. It's a lot of fun to play when everything falls just right! Ral Zarek being able to go ultimate and Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker on the field at the same time is just ridiculous! I've only had one game so far that I've been able to pop Zarek's Ultimate with Liliana of the Veil and Nicol Bolas, Planeswalker on the field at the same time. My wife was the other player and she threw her spindown life counter at me when I did that! (I got 3 extra turns)...

Hahahaha I bet. That sounds rediculous! Have you used this at any FNMs or any other tournaments recently?

May 19, 2013 7:03 a.m.

bluemax87 says... #23

Unfortunately, no. I'm stationed overseas at a Military Base. We have Tournaments, but they aren't sanctioned by Wizards yet. Regardless of all that, I have yet to test this deck out in a tournament setting.

tj70 says... #24

Oh. I'd say that's disappointing, but I must thank you for your service. I'm also pursuing a military career through ROTC, so it's good to know they have tournaments on military bases.

bluemax87 says... #25

The tournaments are organized and run by other Military members. A few of my friends have taken Leave just to go back to the States and get their Judge certification.
