With your problem of the likes of blood baron - Devour Flesh ? It's a common that kills baron.. Sure gains them life.. but with Baron having Lifelink anyway...

I love your deck! The only thing I saw that needs a change is dealing with Desecration Demon . Either add them or add answers for him like Ultimate Price and get rid of Shock ?

March 24, 2014 2:29 a.m.

I would add 4 times Mizzium Mortars into the Main for Blood Barons, these can really kick the deck's ass (I am playing an similar build right now and this guy is nothing but wicked)...

March 24, 2014 5:42 a.m.

I meant side, put the Mortars in the Sideboard :D

I really don't like the Skullcleavers, I would put them out for 2 Xathrid Necromancer s and 2 times Ash Zealot , the Necromancer has proven himself as the Boss against MonoB, MonoR and Control. He also provides the ability to Block without big risks because of the Zombies youre getting. Zealot is just an great Damage Dealer, alternatively you could use Pain Seer , because of his 1 Devo to Black for Mogis Marauder (he is a little akward, if you have less devo than creatures on the board)

My brother made this deck, he ditched his expensive boros for it and loves it, though instead of skullcleavers I gave him my Bloodfray Giant s because it gets past that 4 toughness and has trample, 4 for a 5/4 trample can help it the game lasts to long. Love the Deck standerd would be much more intresing if everyone used budget decks.

I've been enjoying the main deck as is. I tried swapping the Tormented Hero s out for Pain Seer s, but found that the Tormented Hero s treat me better being a 1 drop. The heroic doesnt hurt either. I do play a little bit different sideboard. Im running the Hammer of Purphoros s, but haven't had the opportunity to use them yet. I see how they would come in handy against control though. Aside from that, I'm running 3x Dark Betrayal because killing Desecration Demon for 1 black mana is awesome. 3x Searing Blood . I like these better than Magma Jet . Sure the scry is nice, but getting in 3 damage along while killing a mana dork (or better yet a Boon Satyr ) is better in my opinion. 3x Ultimate Price because they handle most the big nasty green guys, and the Stormbreath Dragon . and finally 3x Mizzium Mortars for the Blood Baron of Vizkopa , Stormbreath Dragon , or whatever. Those sideboard changes have been treating me great. The only other thing I've noticed is that sometimes i end up with a bit too much land. I'm thinking of dropping one of them for an additional Deviant Glee just to balance things out ever so slightly more. Anyway, Fantastic design. Happy to say that my +1 put you in first place. Congrats!

I play something similar. I recommend Seismic Stopm. It is M.M. 5-8 in sideboard for the GR and MBC match ups.

Permission to buy this? It's so good, and I might try it out at FNM!

So this deck is at a score of 143 because people got tired of others spending $600 on a deck and decided to make $20 deck for the sole purpose of beating expensive decks and having the right to say, "HAHA I JUST BEAT YOU WITH A TWENTY DOLLAR DECK LOLOLOLOLOLOL"

I'm all for making budget decks for people to get into the game, but some people in here have some serious hate for expensive decks, have full capability of making an expensive decks, and only want to laugh at people for losing to a $20 deck. That's just poor character, and the kind of people I really don't want to play with.

My friend uses this and consistently kills everyone in our friend group. We had to metagame specifically against this deck just to stand a fighting change.

I don't know if I should congratulate you on your deck building prowess or hire an assassin to come and kill you.

I upvoted either way.

Ever consider Ragemonger ?? Tops your curve at 3 CMC, but only for the first one. Each one after that costs 1 colorless, plus reduces Minotaur Skullcleaver .

I would ALMOST be tempted to try out Kragma Warcaller if you went that route...but not being able to consistently play him for 3 makes it a risk of being a dead draw...

Just got back from out of town, so I'll respond to each card suggestion that doesn't break the budget. If you have rebuttal, or I left your card out, let me know!

Ragemonger - This deck isn't minotaur tribal, and I don't think I want to lower the cost of Minotaur Skullcleaver , especially when he's the same cost as Ragemonger . Just out of place in this deck.

Hellhole Flailer - Something about me doesn't like this card. I do see why he is good, but I've always liked Minotaur Skullcleaver at the top of the curve. He could potentially do a total of 8 damage on turn 4, given that I hit the fourth land and he doesn't die (in which case he'll do none). The skull cleaver does pretty consistent 6 damage on by turn 4, and doesn't rely on the fourth land drop. Also, doing the Madcap Skills on Hellhole Flailer requires me special mana investment to something which could pay off on turn 5 at the soonest, and he could be killed in response to me using his ability, which is a turn down.

Rubblebelt Maaka - I guess I'll have to consider this card. Cant really think of a strong counter argument.

Titan's Strength - I'd rather have Rubblebelt Maaka instead. Since the Maaka can be played as a creature, I think he has more flexibility, and the only time I'd really play Titan's Strength is during combat, which is when Rubblebelt Maaka would be used.

Bile Blight - Double black is somewhat tough to achieve, and it doesn't take care of huge things or have the potential to hit the opponent's face, which is what I like with all of my removal in this deck (i.e. Doom Blade takes down Polukranos, World Eater and Shock is removal and burn).

Armed - I see the potential with Armed on something like Tormented Hero turn 2 to take my opponent to 13 life. But since it lacks instant speed, it can easily be blocked by an opponent, but with Madcap Skills could be lethal, but thats unstable, so I'll need to test this one.

Devour Flesh - Didn't like this at first because opponent gained life, but I think with Naya or Bant Hexproof decks running around, I'll have to consider this for SB depending on how many people play Hexproof decks.

Ash Zealot - Double red is extremely unattractive, and this card doesn't contribute at all to Mogis's Marauder , which I dislike, and it kind of breaks the budget. I did already consider this card.

Pain Seer - Not immediate impact, and doesn't get me cards the next turn. I never played with the so called Dark Confidant of Destiny card, so I'm still wowed by Pain Seer . But my other two drops are much stronger against every matchup but control, and even that's debatable, since the haste on turn 2 maximizes damage.

Searing Blood - Another card I'll have to consider. Double Red is unfortunate, but this clears creatures while burning to the face, two things I like, but it can't always just hit the opponent's face.

I think the current deck list is already extremely solid, so I think I may upload another deck with minor changes linked to this one to see how my changes do. I'll try and convince my other friend to use it, so that I can compare results.

Thanks for looking at the deck, and tell me how you do at your FNM's and against friends (any detailed matches would be really helpful).

Very impressive. I might just order a copy of this deck to use at FNM's for end of rotation! +1

Also, how does it fare against burn decks in general? There is a very strong R/W Burn build that won a SCG open recently, however you're probably unlikely to see that at FNM. I'm going to playtest now it against a Burn/Midrange Boros deck I designed myself a while back, Pop a Solly. Check my deck out and tell me what you think when you get a chance!

Maybe consider putting 1 Slaughter Games in the sideboard against control decks and some decks with troublesome cards like Gray Merchant of Asphodel and Blood Baron of Vizkopa and take off 1 Hammer of Purphoros .

Would you ever put a Firedrinker Satyr in this deck? He's pretty cheap and you can pump him up to get through any surprise blockers. There are good 2 drops already I just wonder if you would ever put him in.

Arorsthrar - I REALLY appreciate what you've done here, and I stand behind your original mission statement 100%.

You can do whatever you want, but I'll offer my opinion, as a fan here:

Keep this deck true to your $20-25 budget.

People have made good suggestions that go over the budget. Make other copies of the deck and put those changes there, but keep this one and keep tweaking it.

I have friends that I am trying to introduce to MTG, and the decks that Top 8 GPs and PTs are intimidating price points to someone who is just trying to learn constructed play.

My strategy for introducing friends, to this point, has been to buy one of the pre-con Event Decks, then use my own collection to help them make it a little more viable.

This deck blows those out of the water, and I'd MUCH rather pay the $30 MSRP for this pile of cards than one of the pre-cons, even though they usually contain some good rares.

Sorry for the long-winded feedback, but I just really appreciate what you've done.

I get what you are saying about Ragemonger . What do you think about Archetype of Aggression ?

How about Thrill-Kill Assassin ?

March 27, 2014 5:59 p.m.

If you were to make a non-budget version, what would you replace?

March 27, 2014 9:23 p.m.

Arorsthrar says... #21

I'd replace the Rakdos Guildgate with Blood Crypt . I'd also just go ahead and throw in Temple of Malice instead of four Swamp . As far as creatures... I'm not too sure. To me, I feel like an upgrade of this deck would be something like Mono Red Devotion. But to further answer your question, I'd use Mizzium Mortars instead of Shock (at least in the SB-maybe main board). I'd throw in two Exava, Rakdos Blood Witch instead of Deviant Glee . I'm trying to find something to replace Minotaur Skullcleaver , but can't really find anything. When I tried building this deck on an unlimited budget, most of the cards I chose were already super cheap, so I personally don't see this as a deck that can get that expensive.Adding more money would just increase consistency.

March 27, 2014 10:27 p.m.

For unbudgeting, add Herald of Torment , Thoughtseize , Pain Seer , and Dreadbore .

March 27, 2014 10:48 p.m.

Arorsthrar says... #23

Mutavault would also be good. I'll work on making an unbudgeted version of this deck to satisfy requests and so people can help me work on an upgraded version of this deck.

What about Shadow Alley Denizen instead of Tormented Hero ? Giving your Rakdos Shred-Freak and Spike Jester intimidate on their first turn could really help.
