elkion, I made it a 3 color deck, what do you think of it now?

I really want a way to be able to dig for the formation, or other big bodies early, and since Commune with the Gods is rotation, I think it is a good choice. Anticipate is another good choice, but I like the large dig effect. Dig Through Time maybe?

With most of my creatures, enchantments, and spell being 2 drops, I think my mana base is ok. I will probably increase it though, when I have the time. Replacing Rotting Mastodon with Torrent Elemental will be a yes, as soon as I get the chance.

My friend, I run a deck like this and it is imperative that you keep at least 2 Negates mainboard. It's hard enough to get a Assault Formation in the first place, and with one Erase your game is done. You need to run Negates mainboard and at least 2 Dispels sideboard or else you will die to any enchantment removal.

I like the work you've done. I've made my own stab at this archetype also trying to keep things budget friendly (mainly draft takings, some commons purchased on mtgo) see if this helps at all.

Benthic Infiltrator seems like it fits well.

I'm building the deck as I write this, but I have huge doubts about Torrent Elemental. It's a 3/5 flyer for 5 and... that's it?

I'm replacing it with Monastery Flock and 2 Silumgar, the Drifting Death. A 3/7 hexproof(!) flyer for 6 that kills tokens is fine, but with Assault Formation it becomes a 2-3 turn clock that almost can't be removed or blocked. Yikes. I don't think more than one Monastery Flock is needed - it's probably going to be blocked by a Thopter token and I don't enjoy the prospect of paying G every time I want it to attack, but a 5/5 flyer is alright, I suppose.

In a week I'll post my playtest results. The deck so far looks great.

I too play silumgar in my assault formation deck. Definitely was the inspiration and is a major all star in the deck

Torrent Elemental also lets all my other creature through, but I agree, silumgar looks great in this deck. Definitely thinking of running him.

Torrent elemental's return from exile is not an insignificant upside. with Utter end, ingest, your own delve spells and all the current exile effects around in standard (had an opponent cast infinite obliteration on me) means it ends up being an extra card in your hand. It might not be abusable as it comes in tapped, but between mortuary mires, etc. Torrent Elemental might need to be dealt with three or four times. Also, having flying on defense, effectively unblockable on offense, tapping down and just having some power compared with the rest of your team when your still searching for Assault Formation mean that the card is far more than just a 5/5 for 5.

I run 2 silumgar and 2 torrent elementals in my deck. http://tappedout.net/mtg-decks/bfz-assault-formation-3/

Well said, I completely agree with you, Corybantic. I think I will run 2 Silumgars, and 2 Torrent Elementals. Maybe only 2 Sidisi's? Ahh, decisions decisions.

I play Mardu Dragons pretty extensively, which is also an aggressive midrange strategy with no ramp. It's already pretty difficult to hit 5 mana consistently while running 25 lands. The six for Silumgar in your 24 land build would be an even bigger gulf.

It could be nice to run a 1 of for you to fetch with Sidisi, though. Cleaning up tokens is really nice.

I think I will replace one torrent elemental with Silumgar, then run another one sideboard? Or should they both be sideboarded?

This is such an interesting idea! I hope you don't mind if I use this list at next week's FNM. I'm not taking credit, but I want to see how it holds up!

Hey no problem! I'm glad that you like it, I put a lot of work into it. If anyone asks about it, or you get first, make sure to give me credit, eh?

Alright, so I've found that Silumgar is often uncasted at 6 mana, but he is an insane finisher. Will try to replace one with another Monastery Flock. I also started mainboarding 2x Sultai Charm to deal with insane Citadel Siege amounts in the meta.

Ydanay says... #23

Yeah, I agree with Sultai Charm, I was worried that the destroy mono color creature wouldn't be as good because of all the eldrazi, but that obviously isn't true, with how little eldrazi decks there are. I am going to be doing some serious editing when I get home.

Torrent Elemental seems really unnecessary Archers' Parapet or Monastery Flock seem like good replacements.

November 11, 2015 9:05 p.m.

Ydanay says... #25

They can be good replacements, but keyword is replacements. It is not fun paying green to attack, and Torrent Elemental lets everything through, which is at least 5. Say you have a Shape the Sands, thats 10. If you have a Disowned Ancestor or Sidisi's Faithful, thats 14, activating the 3 mana ability on Assault Formation makes that 16, plus shape the sands for 21 damage. Torrent Elemental is an immediate threat that MUST be killed, or else they just lost. Can you say the same for Archers Parapet or Monastery Flock?
