Sideboard

The store owner at my lgs agreed to hold pauper tournaments on sunday afternoons, but only if I could make 5 $10 budget decks complete with a sideboard that captures the essence of each color. The plan was to have a 3 round swiss with a purchased booster pack as the fee, and if you wanted to rent a deck it would cost you an additional $1. If you wanted to buy it, the deck would be $15. So I got to brewing.

Introducing the Mono-Blue version of my $10 budget series! Island go... That's the name of the game in this dedicated control deck. In order to be competitive I had to dig deep in the inexpensive counter spell pool blue has to offer. It may not be legal online, but it works in paper. It uses Stormbound Geist which is incredibly resilient and Spire Golem as the classic mono blue kill conditions in pauper.

Please share this deck and business plan with your lgs. As a community it's important to spur the growth of the format and hope that one day Wizards might actually pay attention to it.

Updates Add

The long awaited update is here, I've been unable to play on Sundays at my lgs due to real life adulting, but here it is. With the release of Eternal Masters my lgs saw the birth of combo take the scene by storm. We have a UR Drake, a UG Drake, and Presence of the Vanguard (which can build a crazy big Elvish Vanguard, have an unlimited army, and gain unlimited life). Before jumping back in to the fray, I retooled certain spells and the sideboard to try to combat this threat. My only wish is for Impulse to drop in price so we don't have to run Anticipate.

I lost to Goblins in the first round 0-2, beat Boros Kitty 2-0 in the second, beat UG Drake 2-1 in the third, and beat Hexproof 2-1 in the fourth. I can't imagine what having Counterspell or Daze would do to improve the deck, but I'm happy. Just play smart, Island go.
