This deck aims to use hand disruption to stop your opponent's game plan and then grind them out with Pack Rat and Lingering Souls or lock out your opponent with the Geier Reach Sanitarium + Spirit of the Labyrinth combo.

At a meta level, this deck seeks to address midrange's traditional weakness to fast combo by stuffing the deck full of discard spells (12 + 4 Liliana of the Veil) and make up for slow closing speed with the prison combo and Lupine Prototype. This shift yields advantage to decks that don't care about discard (primarily Affinity and Dredge but also Burn to some extent). Luckily you're playing white so you have the best sideboard hosers, you play maindeck Lingering Souls and they printed Collective Brutality, which is the best card in the deck.

The following synergies support the discard + prison combo game plan.

1. Discard + Pack Rat.

2. Discard + Infernal Tutor. You get hellbent pretty quickly with Liliana of the Veil and Collective Brutality. You can then Infernal Tutor for a missing combo piece, a second Lupine Prototype to close the game fast, a one of tutor target like Vengeful Pharaoh/pseudo-board wipe Cataclysmic Gearhulk, or sometimes a second Lingering Souls in games where it's your trump card.

3. Shambling Vent + Collective Brutality + Kitchen Finks. These 3 combine to make up for not having Lightning Bolt, Abrupt Decay, or other BGx removal options that make those aggro match-ups favorable for other midrange decks.

Sideboard Choices

  1. Fragmentize - This may seem out of place but Leyline of Sanctity will destroy you and it pulls double duty against decks like Affinity.

  2. Damnation - You've got to kill those Eldrazi and it's great against other high volume creature decks.

  3. Anguished Unmaking - This is a catch all that has uses in a ton of scenarios.

  4. Leyline of the Void - These are mainly for dredge or Living End but are plenty useful against Jund, Abzan, and Grixis.

  5. Stony Silence and Kataki, War's Wage - These speak for themselves. The one Kataki, War's Wage is there because it's a better late game tutor against Affinity.

  6. Kitchen Finks - Got to beat those aggro decks plus they pull double duty against fair grindy decks. Running 3 allows you the powerful play of tutoring a second one one turn two then playing them back to back.

  7. Shriekmaw - This card is great against Eldrazi and help you increase your threat level against fair grindy decks while keeping in removal.
