You already made those suggestions around the time Mirrodin Besieged emerged.

I'm just not playing infect in this deck, and it makes more sense to go a different direction.

I also didn't ask for references for comments. You can simply state your opinions, and I can either heed them or not. :)

It's not that I am overlooking it. I'm just choosing to go a different direction.

@Jesse. It is also worth nothing that I don't play anything besides casually with my friends. And though we are competitive, I'm certainly not concerned with the standard "conventions" for deck building. I build what works against what I play against. Though I still want a viable strong deck, which is why this site is great. I get ideas I might not have otherwise thought of.

I will probably never compete in a tournament or get into FNM, so I will probably never see surgical extraction as a "bad" card.

As far as I can tell in the play time I have had with it, it is fun and can help me cripple threats early on in games.

Let me know if anyone has any killer ideas for things I could do to make it more deadly

is as much of a push i need to get into suggestion mode and i didn't realize i had already suggested the inkmoth.

I'm fine with you not doing anything with my suggestion btw, but the thing is that i don't understand your reasoning. I'm really not trying to annoy you or anything but if you would say Inkmoth Nexus is too expensive or including the inkmoth screws with my manabase a bit too much for my liking I would understand. I would disagree but I understand.

In this case however you say that you don't want to go in a different direction, which makes no sense to me because the inkmoth doesn't put you in a different direction, it adds another optional wincondition, and quite a reliable one too, without requiring you to make any concession whatsoever to your current strategy.

The surgical extractions in my opinion are less killer ideas than a 4th mana leak and some removal, which your deck lacks unless you count tumble magnet, which in turn is why i suggested to replace them.

edit after your second post

So i understand that you don't intend to compete in tournaments and stuff and in that case i completely understand going for "less optimal" cards, because you either enjoy them more, have better access to them or something else that's none of my business, so i suppose in this case i've nothing to add.

I do think it a bit strange still that you call for suggestions to make your deck more killer and then proceed to not make your deck more killer with the inkmoths because of a reason that seems to elude me still (not counting the situation where you don't own the nexi and don't feel like buying them, but this also eludes me cause i don't know whether that is the actual case or not :P).

That all being said, i may come on a bit strong in this response but it's meant with all due respect and all the best wishes for you to enjoy (and crush!) your kitchen-table-mage-wars :)

On a side-note:

I have never entered in tournaments or FNM's either and just enjoy building decks that work and do goofy stuff and such, isn't it great? :)

Haha. Yeah...the inkmoths are killer. I use them in my Parody of Parity deck.

I'm not looking at decks based on specific win-conditions...more a common theme...and while inkmoths are artifacts and have synergy with my deck I get tired of that Tezz/Inkmoth combo and I'd prefer to get more killer without it.

You may recall I was previously running Ornithopthers before Vault Skirge came along. That was a no brainer to swap out.

I run the inkmoths in the other deck because they are infect and that is a mono-white artifact infect deck.

This Tezz deck is simply a u/b deck that utizlizes Tezz and artifacts to control and kill (and sometimes do other fun things).

Inkmoth would take away from that theme for me. I think the combo is great. I just don't want any infect mucking up my deck.

(actually we are a basement dweller mage war having group). It's a lair.

Get ready to say goodbye to Duress .

Yeah...boo on that not coming back...

At least I can put in Ponder , maybe more Despise and maybe addtional draw power or more single-removal instants in the main board.

I don't think it will completely wreck me but it will be a couple of spots that I will really miss.

I could also try to work in Distress but that seems more like something for my mono-black deck...it's partly why i'm reserved at putting card:Geth's Verdict in despite it having lots of applicable situations for me.

Do you like Distress for mono-black because of BB or 2cmc?

July 15, 2011 1:37 a.m.

theemptyquiver says... #9

BB is easier to pay in a mono-black control deck for a card like that. If I have that card in my deck, I better be able to play it turn 2 or else I am probably missing oppotunities and likely losing.

I love Tezz-decks!!! Yours looks pretty refined too. I'd definitely appreciate it if you check out any of my deck and share some constructive criticism since I'm new to the site... I have a 3 color Tezzy deck called Pure Tezz Dispenser and a bunch of other originals, as I love brewing... keep up the good work!+1

Thanks. I will check out your deck.

This is one of my go-to decks lately when I want to dismantle the people in my playgroup.

Nothing feels more satisfying than sitting on 2-3 tumble magnets and a contagion clasp and watching them grow while I keep everything tapped down while I eat away at them.

Plus once you get Tezz out his final ability can become reusable with enough proliferating.

i really enjoy this deck, i dropped 1 leak and 1 coil and added two dark tutalage. with the life gain in this deck it makes tutalage a lot of fun. (for me of course)

with the arts would stoics be more viable then leaks? granted they wont be avail first few turns but what are your thoughts on that?

August 23, 2011 10:37 p.m.

i would never be one to complain about a hard counter, and I've certainly "ponder"ed using them as well, but I've stuck with the mana leaks for early game control simply because mid-late game is getting controlled with tumble magnets and such. Also it is nice to have the flexibility of the 1 colorless and 1 blue over the 2 blue cost of stoic...

i like the speed of mana leak. and the artwork is more enjoyable when it is my hand.

i like the dark tutelage idea. that definately gives this deck a different feel and double-edge sword feel to it.

shot of adrenaline.

ahh you know that does make sense about the leaks. thanks for response i'll switch back to them.

another thing on this i wanted to touch on was the 3 despise. this card even when it fizzles (no legal target in hand) its still solid as u get to see the hand.

i dropped 2 and went 1 despise 1 inquisition 1 duress just to diversify targets. Does this take away from decks effectability? or is it just preference here?

TheNME says... #15

i also added 2 buried ruins for 1 island 1 swamp. forgot to add that :p

August 24, 2011 12:38 a.m.

for me it is preference because most of my playgroup (including paul) have a lot of nasty creatures that I would prefer not to see on the table against me.

i think if you were playing FNM or tournaments, where you would see specific deck archetypes it would make more sense to plan on a specific package against "valakut" "caw blade" etc--which may be good for duress/or iok.

for me, a lot of it is preference because i have very particular things i like to accomplish in my games against my opponents. keeping consistancy in my hands lends itself to that outcome more often than not.

August 24, 2011 12:42 a.m.

yeah. i think buried ruin is good for this deck. i may go that route at some point. i just haven't experiemented with it yet.

August 24, 2011 12:43 a.m.

hmm.

@TheNME. How have the Buried Ruin s been working? I am curious to try it out in my build.

hasnt really changed the play of deck at all honestly.. i would go with Dark Tutelage s before the ruins.

damn. that was quicker than the bat-signal.

:O

:)

you have trouble getting your wurmcoils out? one problem i had in playing this was drawing them to early... why i went down to two..

i am only running 3 leaks though as counters so maybe thats why.. idk.

been kicking around the idea of running 2 Spellskite OR 2 Phyrexian Revoker s mainboard.. thoughts on this?

also 2 Torpor Orb s in sideboard for my version.. that card can really dismantle a lot of deck themes.
