The Darkness Below

Ive been playing Modern for a few years now , and have come to find that i enjoy Mardu coloured Decks the most, even though they arent considered to be the best in any regard.Or even Viable.

This changed when Nahiri was printed , and people began to give this Wedge a bit more attention.I have been playing Small Mardu Midrange for quite some time , as i disliked Nahiri. I preferred "bad Jund" over the other Variants of Mardu Builds because it felt more interactive. Even though the Deck lacked Pressure in the Form of a powerful 2 Drop , i enjoyed playing the Deck.But since recently , i started to not enjoy the Deck as much as i used to.I was getting Bored with the way you Win, which was pretty much always a combination of Lingering souls and Burn spells.So i Began looking elsewhere, and i came across some interesting concepts.I took the Kiki+Restoration Angel shell that i experimented with and merged it with an Unburial Rites Package.This Deck is the Result of my efforts.

While i realize that it is not Particularly a competitive Deck , i feel it is fairly Strong.Strong enough to have a serious Fighting Chance on FNM Level Magic.

You still have the very interactive and Grindy first Turns, and lots of ways to Hinder your Opponents Gameplan whilst advancing your own. But now , instead of slow winconditions , you have the Reanimator Package which Ends Games rather quickly.

Gameplan and basic Build

This Deck plays like a mix of Jund and Twin with a pinch of Legacy Reanimator thrown in there for good measure and Fun times.The first few turns you have to disrupt your opponent whilst setting up and cycling through your deck with looting.when you hit your Pieces ,you need to evaluate when to go off and then either Reanimate a Threat or Drop the Combo. Having Both in one Decks keeps the Opponent on his Toes.

Creatures

Iona, Shield of Emeria Show

The Ruiner of Friendships and fun , Queen "YOUDONTGETTOPLAYMAGICANYMORE" .Iona has been used in Esper Rites Shells and she was one of the First Creatures that came to consideration when i Started to think about Reanimation Targets.there are some Decks that cant beat a resolved Iona.Others dont care about her.She isnt always the best Choice , but i like the Free win Chance that she adds.

Griselbrand Show

While Griselbrand does nothing upon hitting the battlefield , he does allow us to draw a ton of cards and develop a situation in which we are so far ahead that it becomes very hard to lose.

Elesh Norn, Grand Cenobite Show

Elesh Norn is our answer to aggro , and in general "go-wide" strategies.She has also seen play in Esper Gift Rites Decks and that is exactly why i chose her. Her inclusion in those Decks made sense to me and i found it only logical to include her as well.

Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker Show

Backup Combo Piece and also reanimation target. while not particularly popular right now , i think there is enough value in the Kiki +Resto combo to justify running it.it has performed very well so far and just gives you another out. also works really well with Fulminator Mage , Wall of Omens and Bedlam Reveler

Restoration Angel Show

Restoration Angel has been well known to be a reasonable and well performing card.It combos with Kiki-Jiki, Mirror Breaker to create infinite hasty flying 3/4 Angels.it can blink Wall of Omens and Bedlam Reveler to draw cards and is overall a good card in this deck.

Wall of Omens Show

Wall of omens helps in drawing cards and providing a defensive option against aggressive decks.

Fulminator Mage Show

this Card helps against Decks that use nonbasic lands to do dirty and rotten unfair stuff ( looking at you there Tron...)My main reason for running this card is that i often come across decks where i want some land destruction .this is by no means a required card for this deck , i simply like to play it .

Bedlam Reveler Show

When Eldritch Moon came up , i saw this card and immediately took a liking to it. I saw lots and lots of People trying to get it to work , in delver lists , control lists ( which is a terrible idea), tempo lists, in storm, aggro , burn , in pretty much anything.It was always bad.But in this list , it isnt. at least not to me. it does what i need it to do when i need it .blinking this card with resto is amazing.

Spells

Lightning Bolt Show

One of the biggest reasons to play Red in the First place,this is an obvious inclusion. Always play 4

Faithless Looting Show

our Main discard outlet. helps cycling through our deck and discarding the right cards.

Path to Exile Show

i only play 3 because the decks i face dont require as much removal, and if so , a wrath would be better.obviously you can adjust the number of paths accordingly. in an unknown meta , i would probably run 4.

Wrath of God Show

damnation would be better. i know. i dont own any and the benefit ,while existant ,is not big enough for me to justify spending 40 instead of 3

Kolaghan's Command Show

Very versatile spell. i have used the discard mode on myself more than once.

Inquisition of Kozilek Show

early disruption. i am not happy with the numbers on there , i am pretty sure running 4 discard spells is too low , but its working for me right now. might be due to Liliana of the Veil.

Thoughtseize Show

Thoughtseize is just a good card to have. it can deal with something we cannot answer and can occasionally be used to discard either Unburial Rites or one of our reanimation targets.

Planeswalker

Liliana of the Veil Show

Liliana works really well with this deck. shes just a powerhouse planeswalker that does what we need her to do.the discard is greatly beneficial for us, for two reasons. it helps us dump our combo pieces into the yard while also taking away possible answers our opponent might have.

Lands

The landbase consists of your prefered combination of fetch and shocklands, as well as your choice of fastlands/checklands/urborg/basics.The really interesting additions are the utility Lands.

Geier Reach Sanitarium Show

additional discard outlet.

Lavaclaw Reaches Show

The older of our Manlands, this card has been neglected and frowned upon but it has performed quite well for me.best used when our opponent has no cards in hand , this is an excellent way to end a game that has gone long.

Shambling Vent Show

The new Manland has proven to be very good and a lot of people have included this on in their lists.this is probably our saving grace when it comes to manlands. its no raging ravine , but still performs very well.
