The Distillation of Hand Control

Modern* Control

ajain63

A Modern Guide to Preemptive Self Defense. This guide is still in construction and any and all feedback is welcome and appreciated.

Goal: The strength of hand control lies in its abilities to remove threats to the player before the card can be played. While some decks may employ discard for the entirety of the game, this strategy can be inconsistent and decks that feed off the graveyard are often aided. This deck will focus on having consistent board presence so the game is played normally while slowly strangling the resources available to the player.

Card Choices

Removal

  • Devour Flesh

I wanted to use Geth's Verdict but Devour Flesh is better because you can choose the target to sacrifice. The life gain may seem to be a downside but you can easily take it out with combat phase. This also helps clear off threats to secure damage and remove any indestructible creatures that dodge other removal.

  • Doom Blade

I thought about running Ultimate Price, but with the Eldrazi threat swarming modern, Doom Blade succeeds where Ultimate Price doesn't.

  • Victim of Night

This hits where Doom Blade doesn't.

  • Damnation

Board Clear to hit all threats. Because the deck runs Bitterblossom you won't be too bad off.

Hand Control

  • Despise

Low cost early game creature or planeswalker removal.

  • Duress

Despise targeted more towards removing pesky spells that your opponent may have in hand.

  • Inquisition of Kozilek

Another option should you not have Despise or Thoughtseize

  • Thoughtseize

Dear lord how stupid is this card.
