Dragons are by far my favorite tribe in MTG, and Dragonstorm is by far my favorite card. I wanted to create a deck that could abuse Dragonstorm and could just be super fun for me to use.
The Main combo:
Dream Halls + Conflux + Any card - 1) When you get Dream Halls onto the battlefield, you discard any card for Conflux. 2) You conflux up 5 spells: Regrowth or Recollect as your green card, any other green card that is more than one color, and 3 other cards in any combination to fill the last 3 colors (An example would be Recollect green, Dragonlord Atarka red, Dragonlord Ojutai white, Cyclonic Rift blue, and Dragonlord Silumgar for black). 3) You then discard the one green card to cast Recollect or Regrowth to get back Conflux to your hand. 4) Repeat step 2 and 3 if the other recollect/regrowth is in your deck/hand. If it's in your graveyard or exiled, skip to step 5. 5) Cast Conflux to get Praetor's Counsel and 4 other cards. 6) Cast Praetor's Counsel to return all your cards in your graveyard to your hand, then repeat steps 2 and 3. If you haven't already, make sure to Conflux up Dragonstorm out of your deck. (If you cast Dream Halls on the turn you combo off, you can have a storm count upwards of 10. Casting creatures or other spells you searched with Conflux will increase your storm count as well). 7) Once you have a sufficiently high storm count, go ahead and cast Dragonstorm for upwards of 10 dragons. If you don't have it on the field already, use the first copy to get Scourge of Valkas into play, then use the second copy to get a haste enabler like Dragonlord Kolaghan or Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund. 8) Kill everyone with Valkas triggers or massive attacks with your horde of hastey dragons.
Dragonlord Dromoka + Dream Halls + Conflux + Any Card - Dragonlord Dromoka completely locks your opponents from casting spells on your turn which protects your combo. If you don't have it in play when you start your combo, make sure your first conflux searches it up right alongside your regrowth effect. If you want the Dragonlord out before you start your combo you can summon your commander Scion of the Ur-Dragon and use 2 mana to make sure your combo is safe before it even begins.
The combo is very fragile, and pretty inconsistent (the multitude of tutors help you get the 2 necessary pieces for the combo but I rarely want to just go straight into it without any protection, specifically against blue), however every dragon in this deck is a huge threat so sticking 2 or 3 of them makes for a very effective beatdown strategy as an alternate win condition. I do not run Skithiryx, the Blight Dragon because I despise infect as a mechanic, however I do run Dragon Tyrant and Moltensteel Dragon to easily get your commander damage stacked up.
There are so many neat dragon synergies while playing this deck, both while comboing off and while playing a beatdown game, that I have yet to get bored of playing the deck. Here are a small sampling of some of my favorites:
Dragon Tempest
+
Scourge of Valkas
- Either of them being on the field while comboing is great, but getting BOTH of them on the field means that each dragon deals X damage (X equaling the number of dragons you control) to a creature OR a player. This quickly gets out of hand.
Descent of the Dragons + Karrthus, Tyrant of Jund
- Play Descent, destroy all your opponents creatures, play Karrthus, laugh at your opponents misery with all your brand new hasty 4/4 dragons. (I've never actually pulled off this 13 mana combo but I have it in mind and one day I will blow out my opponents with it).
Bladewing the Risen - When you combo, you are generally discarding a bunch of dragons to help you caste Regrowth, Conflux, etc. After you cast Dragonstorm, Bladewing the Risen gets you one of those discarded friends back onto the battlefield. Might seem obvious but can be easily overlooked when you are searching your library and trying to match colors. Try to leave Bladewing in your deck for the big finish. (Also just works well as a 7 mana for 2 threats dude on the beatdown side of the deck).
Atarka, World Render
+
Dragon Mage
- Attacking with Dragon Mage while Atarka, World Render is on the field means that if Dragon Mage hits the opposing player, every player discards their hand and draws seven cards twice.
Dragonlord Kolaghan - His ability to deal 10 damage may seem irrelevant in a format like commander, but it will stop a Relentless Rats deck in its tracks. Plus this deck is purely for the flavor of dragons, so of course I'm going to play all 5 Dragonlords.
Nicol Bolas - I do not use Nicol Bolas because I feel like he is really bad for politics (Although the combo isn't particularly politics friendly either...). If I need a persons hand discarded I replace the effect with a much more balanced (In my opinion) Dragon Mage or Crosis, the Purger.
Cyclonic Rift + Crosis the Purger + Any haste enabler - Cyclonic Rift everything your opponent owns to their hands, then get Crosis, the Purger on the battlefield and make them discard all their nasty stuff of one color. If they are playing a mono color deck it's just extra win for you. (Note: this requires much more set up then just an attack with Nicol Bolas, hence why I am okay running this and why I don't run our not so friendly guy).
Sarkhan Unbroken
+
Ugin, the Spirit Dragon
- Not very synergistic in the deck (especially Ugin who is colorless) but I run them for more of a flavor win than anything. (Also, if I haven't driven my hate of Nicol into this description enough, I just CAN NOT have a flavor based deck that runs both Ugin and Nicol Bolas in the same deck. They're mortal enemies! They'd never work together, so they'll never work together in my deck).
My final note in this long winded description is no: my mana base is not the best mana base, but it works extremely well for the deck and gets me the colors I need while also being extremely cheap in comparison to what some mana bases can cost. I owned 80% of the lands when I started making the deck and while I could improve it I am extremely satisfied with its current performance.
