In the Vast... what do you see? I see... light? Ah yes, but where there is light - there is darkness. And flicker they do, with the aid of a smoldering fire... Has Kaalia tamed these wonders in the Vast? Or does merely rally them and let them loose?

To our opponents, the answer simply won't matter...

Led by Kaalia the Vast, the realm of dragons, demons, and angels combine to lead a passionate other-worldly assault on the multiverse. In a somewhat-typical Kaalia deck, you will also find ferocious burn coupled with diplomacy leading to a field of heavy swings with high utility and a lot of outgoing damage - combat and otherwise.

While what always makes a Kaalia of the Vast deck shine are its creature choices, we can't discuss what's going on there without appreciating the landscape we will be setting her in. I consider my set of accessories to only be accomplishing two goals: more damage, more attack phases. So lets look at each of those goals:

More Damage:

We accomplish this feat with either double strike, or damage doubling. Double strike is the simpler version, but it provides a good base set of damage, letting our baddies mostly wipe out threats in the first strike combat step. Our tools for this are:

Where our damage really ramps up is damage doubling. These effects are pretty straightforward, but their exponential growth ends up being quite incredible - especially when on the field with Gisela, Blade of Goldnight!

More Attack Phases:

We have quite a lot in the ways of this effect, and that is because we want Kaalia of the Vast's trigger to go off as much as possible. We have a couple creatures who endeavour to aid in this goal, but if we're looking merely at the accessories we have:

The 'More Attack Phases' stratagem comes out reliably every game due to it's consistency in the deck, and this is part of what accelerates this version of Kaalia of the Vast to victory.

The Angels server to be a major part of what keeps the deck running smoothly. We rely on our angels to keep our creatures alive, coming onto the field, and being in full effect. Of course, all the creatures have great raw aggro capabilities, but the Angels certainly play a far greater 'support' role than the others.

Our most useful and necessary Angels are going to be:

Clearly Gisela, Blade of Goldnight speaks for herself. An absolutely massive damae output advantage combined with some protect. I've seen her run as her own B/R Aggro commander, but she slots in strongest here where more often we're not paying a steep cast cost, and she is matching up with Furnace of Rath and/or Gratuitous Violence to give us exponential damage growth.

Iona, Shield of Emeria is obviously huge when shutting down those annoying blue contol/combo decks. Stopping a deck in its tracks with her works some of the time, but often what I end up leveraging Iona for is actually shutting down splash-black, killing opponents' recursion which is major in my local meta.

What makes Reya Dawnbringer so great for us is that, generally speaking, we actually don't have much in the way of bringing back our lost comrades. We don't want to lose essential powerful pieces like Gisela, Blade of Goldnight or razaketh, the foulblooded , and so Reya is going to do a fine job of keeping these guys coming onto the field and being an extra bit of insurance to make sure no major players stay gone for good.

Additional helpful heroines are going to be:

The first two, card:Bassandra Battle Seraph and Angelic Arbiter helps give us easy shutdown so we can focus on our aggro strengths without too much disruption.

The next couples of ladies, Magister of Worth and Emeria Shepherd also server a slightly weaker version of Reya Dawnbringer's role... Believe it or not Magister of Worth consistently works out for Grace and in general this has caused me to win games.

Lastly, we have my budget version of Avacyn, Angel of Hope: Deathless Angel. We have to get some indestructibility somehow!

Also worth mentioning: the invaluable Luminarch Ascension to keep steady and flashy new Angels for our protection.

Razaketh, the Foulblooded Art "The promise of anguish is payment enough for services rendered." - Indulgent Tormentor

Demon's are big and beefy like every member of our flock, but what their role really stands out as is keeping advantage. Cards, cards, cards... and also a bit of board state. We want to mostly use our Demons to keep card advantage and force opponents to run less blockers so our aggro doesn't face too much interference.

The main Demons to accomplish these goals are:

Razaketh, the Foulblooded is an absolute powerhouse tutor in our deck. Considering we have some lifelink boosting us, he really doesnt cost much to help us retrieve our essential players from our library. He is a must-run in any Kaalia of the Vast deck.

Likewise, Harvester of Souls is another must-run demon for many decks; managing to keep card advantage piling in while aggro is taking its tole on the creature of the Vast. You will see this card run anywhere where heavy-creature black decks are rolling about.

To manage the opponents board state we have Archfiend of Depravity. An insane amount of creature-suppression (although this has turned very counter-productive against card:Mazirek, Kraul Deathpriet) to be played with caution. He is likely to draw some removal, but so be it. Let the opponents face the steep cost of his force-sacrificing.

The final of our big-four Demons is Malfegor. Much less consistent than Archfiend of Depravity, but much more immediate and helpful. Less prone to having his effect stopped as well, since it is an ETB effect. Also, he fits into two of our categories of creatures! Meaning he will synergize with our Dragon-boosting cards as well.

The Demon B-Team consist of:

Supplementing each of the two Demon roles is one handy Demonic fellow.

Indulgent Tormentor is nice and handy to keep up draw pace - as people usually choose not to pay the cost in my local meta (and even if they did, choosing the right opponent makes it worth it!).

Whereas Reaper from the Abyss helps us pick off troublesome potential-blockers.

Now, there is another essential demon which does not fit into these categories - because he is a win-con. No doubt if you've seen Kaalia of the Vast before, or simply read through the deck list carefully, you know what a major wombo-punch Master of Cruelties delivers. He alone drops opponents down to 1 HP, which makes him lethal alone. However, he doesn't need to be alone as his card suggests. Bringing him in with Kaalia of the Vast is legal and both his effect and damage would resolve. 1 hit KO for the win!

Hellkite Charger Art "He marks his territory with fire and wrath, etching the mountainside with his charring breath." - Flameblast Dragon

Fire! Yes, now we get to the anger, the rage, the aggro that we need to win... I've opted for a version of Kaalia of the Vast that places the offensive power of Dragons front and center. While every memeber of our flock can be devastating, it is these woeful flying beasts that really pack a punch.

The backbone of our attacking force will be:

Balefire Dragon is just an absolute aggro beast. He will be quick to draw removal, but he just needs to swing once to clear an undefended board. Bring him in unexpectedly with Kaalia of the Vast and you'll find lots of casual players struggle to find a response.

A staple of Dragonkind, Flameblast Dragon does what Dragons do best - he swings, and he burns. Damage output can get pretty high with Furnace of Rath. When he is in your hand you may want to keep your lands/rocks untapped until combat resolves to see how much flame you'll be blasting.

Hellkite Charger really is a staple Dragon - running his own little card:Aggrivated Assault he helps us bring in the consistency of the multiple-attack-phases stratagem in the deck. More attacking = more free baddies = more wallops for our opponents.

Lastly in our big baddie lineup is Utvara Hellkite. Man-oh-man, this guy has really paid off in my local meta. It seems like people don't take the threat of spawning big new Dragonbros seriously enough where I'm from, as this buddy rarely sees an answer and leads to many won games. All I say? The more Dragons, the better.

Honourable mentions go to Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury and Oros, the Avenger, who will provide a much weaker - but not unappreciated - Dragon buff and a useful creature-burn-for-removal's-sake that occasionally comes in handy.

We also want an aggressive Dragon thief:

We receive some protection and some recursion:

Thunderbreak Regent helps dis-incentivize targeting our aggro players quite a bit (the goal is to give the opponents lots of juicy targets and this will help keep the important Dragons on the field over the less conspicuous Angels and/or Demons).

Meanwhile Bladewing the Risen is good for saving an important Dragonbro that did manage to find its way into the graveyard.

We have to mention the utility of the Kamigawa Dragons we're running:

I decided not to run the red Kamigawa Dragons because, and let's be honest, it simply isn't as good. Here we have two major additions - Yosei, the Morning Star being excellent for a turn of lockdown or a pre-combat sacrifice to ensure combat resolves our way - and Kokusho, the Evening Star, which is a great zap that can bail us out if we don't have our aggro engine running and are taking hits to the face early.

Lastly, Deathbringer Regent can double as a fresh baddie alongside Kaalia of the Vast, or a tricky board-wipe. Mostly an extra pair of flying muscle, but he helps us sleep at night in case we need him.

Aye, we will fly and charge to victory. Past all the sly tricks and weak illusions. We will have clairvoyance past the ugly summons and mysticism that our wretched opponents worship. All we need, is brute force, and soaring courage. All will tremble, and find themselves helpless - begging for mercy.

Mercy...

I'm sorry, but that is something Kaalia of the Vast simply has none of to spare.
