Maybeboard

Goal here is to saddle The Gitrog, Ravenous Ride with a high power creature, draw lots of cards and put lots of lands onto the battlefield, then go face with massive hydras once we generate an overwhelming amount of cards and mana.

The ideal line is probably to ramp on turn 2, play a good sacrificial creature (3 or 4 drop) on turn 3, then play Gitrog on turn 4 and immediately sac the creature for value. I only expect to saddle the Gitrog once, which should be enough to bootstrap me up to 8-9 mana and allow me to begin deploying the second wave.

Breakdown:

  • 45 lands (still working on which lands in particular, utility suggestions welcome)

  • 10 two mana ramp spells to ensure we land Gitrog on turn 4

  • 9 removal spells

  • 3 misc value pieces

  • 14 first wave 3-4 drop creatures that are excellent sacrifice fodder with high power to maximize value from the Gitrog

  • Some fraction of the remaining 15 for the second wave: beefy 5-7 mana cards that swing me into the late game, either with their effects or with their high power combined with the Gitrog's ability

  • Some fraction of the remaining 15 for the third wave: this is our top end, gigantic X spells and the biggest creatures a budget deck can play that will close out the game

EDIT: after some playtesting, the reason this deck was bad was because the first wave creatures were absolutely useless after their first sacrifice. Once the deck has lots of mana, it often runs into situations where it somehow still can't function and dies after being labeled archenemy. Put simply, we have to accept the sacrifice of some burstiness in the early game in order to have some enablers that quickly convert our value into a win. Some kind of a +1/+1 counter or lands theme might work to connect the first and third waves. The new first wave can be thought of as either value enablers to be used over time, or cards to pitch to the Gitrog for their power. The hydra theme is a glue that binds the deck together!
