How would you change the manabase if I put Gideon in instead of Narset?

December 2, 2015 5:06 p.m.

Since that would only slightly effect it, I would probably go -1 island =1 plains TBH. No drastic change. Maybe my favorite thing about TO is the little circle it has with the Mana symbols/land mana production, I try to keep those about in line.

Of course, If you can get those playset fetches that would be a huge upgrade.

Also, is your username a pun on Polydorus?

No, Polydamas was a minor character from the Illiad. I'm fairly new though, so what playset fetches are we talking about exactly?

I wouldn't line up your lands with the amount of coloured mana you need to produce.

That is a mistake that a lot of people make.

What you want to do instead is slightly weight your colours towards the spells you want to play earlier.

eg. If you are playing a lot of 1 and 2 drops that are and you don't see until your third drop, you would put slightly more sources of in your deck.

Of course mana fixing lands help with this process.

December 3, 2015 7:31 a.m.

I agree, but I have all three of my colors by turn three.

polydamas Who was he again? And I mean Flooded Strand and Polluted Delta.

Thanks for the response! Polydamas was an officer in Hector's army. He suggested that they take a more cautious approach to the war, but Hector wanted a direct onslaught and he paid for it.

Not that it would have mattered, in the end it was ingenuity, Guile, cunning, and deceit on Odysseus's part that won the day.

May I point out how baller it is that we are discussing events which happened over 3000 years ago?

December 4, 2015 11:48 p.m.

So, last night I didn't stay all night, I dropped after going 2-1 because a good friend of mine had wanted to come since she had nothing better to do and she got bored and cold so we went to her house.

Prior to dropping, however, here's how it went:

Round 1: RG Landfall aggro: 2-0

Round 2: Temur: 2-1

Round 3: Abzan: 0-2.

However, this week I never got around to making the changes I put on TO, so my SB was different and I didn't have any Planar Outburst, instead having an extra Languish and Scatter to the Winds.

I also only briefly came home before FNM, and I was with my friend so I totally forgot to get anything, so I didn't have my playmat or binder. My binder, as it happens, has a playset of Planar Outburst in it, two of which are now in my deck...

OK!!

So, my LGS was out of Silkwrap, so on to plan B... I'm going to take a risk. Student of Ojutai. You know why you just hovered over that hyperlink? Because it sees no play at all. It's problem is simple- it is Fantastic against aggro, but it is four mana. One mana less, it would be utterly meta, playset in every white sideboard, good uncommon quality. It is not. Does that make it unplayable? Yes. But I want to make sure... so this next week I'm going to be running three in my SB, and I want to see if it can work against aggro.

Here's what SB will look like against aggro:

-2 Ob Nixilix

-2 Quarantine Field

-2 Narset

-2 Utter End

+4 Despise

+1 Languish

+3 Student of Ojutai.

I have looked also at Student of Ojutai, but as you said 4 mana is a stretch. With Arashin Cleric it's quick simple and ready to block on Turn 2/3. With Student your not blocking until Turn 4/5 and by then the aggro decks are usually beating on you.

I tried it in Abzan before instead of Cleric as a SB tech and it didn't work.

December 8, 2015 7:08 a.m.

Alright, thanks. I'm glad to hear someone else has tried, it, I'll replace it with cleric.

Double blue, double black, and double white spells? In playtesting, I found myself unable to cast spells in hand per needing a 2nd of a color. I'd consider getting rid of most, if not all double mana spells for at least 1 color, probably black. Get rid of Ob Nixilus for much a more powerful Gideon. Languish and Rouinous Path can be removed or reduced for more Outburst, Snare, and/or Quarentine Field.

What do you think of Sphinx the Final Word in this deck?

December 17, 2015 8:24 p.m.

That is a card.

I'm actually not sure, really. Body wise, there are better things. Against aggro, Silumgar, the Drifting Death is definitely better. SB Against control is an option, but one for which Mastery and Pearl Lake Ancient also exist... maybe SB against control, but I don't see it as MB

As an aside, first place tonight.

Round 1: Dune midrange: 2-0

Round 2: Abzan Aggro: 2-0

Round 3: Orzhov Warriors: 2-0

Round 4: No idea, we knew we were going to be first & second so we drew & played EDH instead...

Could you help me with my noob deck: Shitcontrol?

December 20, 2015 12:44 p.m.

Stylez121 says... #16

Hm? No Ugin, the Spirit Dragon? This guy is (at the moment) Standard Control's best friend...

OK, he may be a bit slow, but he is a fair bomb once established. Combine with Mage-Ring Network, that just about knocks out the slow problem...

As for Mastery of the Unseen, I don't really see a lot of situations where it would be useful, considering you're going to hit a fair chunk of your removal and counter, before you hit Ojutai. Perhaps Crux of Fate or End Hostilities?

Aside from that, looks a fairly solid deck

January 7, 2016 9:34 p.m.

Thanks. Yeah, at least for the moment I'm not going to Mainboard Mastery... If I keep siding it in every game I might reconsider. As for Eugene the Spirit dragon, I'm going to make the same call as for why I have no fetches..... money.

And I'm pretty happy with my wipes. I prefer languish to Crux, and obviously Outburst to End Hostilities.

I really like these kinds of decks so is there anyway to make it a bit more budget friendly? I'm looking at around 100$ at most.

January 8, 2016 12:22 a.m.

Ok, please, one of you beautiful people tell me why this is wrong.

It entered my mind to drop black.

The first and correct reaction, of course, is "No. No. Absolutely- just no! Heck No!"

But think. I only have three cards Mainboard that are black. One is Ob Nixilis, whom, while I love him, is a wincon and there are other things. He is replaceable, be it with Mainboard Pearl Lake Ancient or whatever, it won't be too much trouble. Next up is Utter End, which.... Ok, the non-land thing is nice, but I could up the Quarantine Field count, Maybe +2 Quarantine Field and and +2 Stasis Snare? Or +1 Stasis Snare and +1 Immolating Glare? Next is Languish. I love Languish. But it does not hit everything, and there's lots of really, really good early white removal, by which I mean Stasis Snare and Immolating Glare. I could replace it with 2 more planar outburst and an End Hostilities.

Sideboard It's an easier choice. Despise becomes Silkwrap and Languish becomes another End Hostilities.

Or I might move Pearl Lake Ancient in in place of Ob Nixilis Reignited, freeing up extra space in my sideboard. Or might Mainboard a 1-of Mastery of the Unseen. Maybe 1 Mastery & one Ancient to keep it diverse?

And the land base would be much simplified and less tap-landy, something that is good

What do you guys think? It just feels wrong to drop black, but.... Logically this doesn't feel so bad?!?!?

Here's what I'm gonna do, I'm gonna drop black for now to playtest & if either I find it isn't working in playtestinig, or someone convinces me otherwise I'mm change it back.

I'm game. Is Narset or Gideon better?

January 9, 2016 10:50 p.m.

polydamas says... #21

Also, what are you going to do after rotation?

January 9, 2016 10:52 p.m.

Gideon is better, but also $40. But I've been having some amazing success with Narset... I've had multiple people just forfeit when she gets to nine because they can't stop her from ultimating. I've also found that it's totally ok to treat Dig Through Time as a sorcery to rebound it.... it's worth the -2 and not playing instant speed to filter your top 14 cards.

And after rotation? I'll think about that when SOI is spoiled lol.

January 9, 2016 11:53 p.m.

Sure I will! I love Awaken! One of my favorite effects in the game, like I do a thing and oh my land is a creature.

Yup, that was a dumb question. Anyways, could you make the text black? It is kind of hard to see a light text on a light background.
