That's the route I went down with Awkward Family Reunion. I think it might be pretty solid when I use it but I really didn't try and get everything down perfect.
The Good Church however I designed to be able to win.

Yea when it comes to modern competitions I at least try winning while I have fun xD

Exactly!
From what I've seen of Commander it's a lot more laid back and casual. One of the things I did like about it was all the politics that started happening: short term alliances, grudges, even gifts in some instances, it was pretty cool.

Yah if I ever wanted to invest money into commander I would make myself a nice political deck.

If I find myself really liking it I'll probably do the same. I liking seeing everyone kill each-other and not me.
Awkward Family Reunion is a bit pricey but I actually owned most of the expensive cards, they we're just kinda lying around in my trade binder. It'll be pretty cheap to get running.

I put together a Sliver EDH build. It seems to do pretty well. I really slapped it together. Very basic build. Slivered Commander

Slivers seem to be a very popular choice among Commander players.

In EDH, each card preferably has to be able to majorly change the board state or the game position. This is different than modern, where you can basically just throw out tiny creatures to ruin your enemy; it's a slower format, due to life and always having a castable creature. Multi-color decks thrive in the meta because it's a slower game. Thus, Slivers do fairly well. However, they usually aren't tournament gods, just really fun to play.
I have a couple commander suggestions you might like (based on how you build your decks), if you would like to see them.

I would love to hear your suggestions!
As I said I'm new to the format so I'm not sure how to build a successful Commander deck.

chokes I had written out a good four paragraphs and then I lost my writing.

Tutors are important in EDH because you have 65 unique cards to draw from (usually) and you have access to almost every magic card ever printed. Epochalyptik's main format is EDH, so he has some very nice lists on his deck page. Here's his list on EDH tutor cards.
People like to run tricolor in Commander because it works in the play format and it doesn't limit your options very much. However, any number of colors is acceptable as well as it's well built. I've seen some people do very well with monocolor commanders such as Mikaeus, the Unhallowed.
The only real way to find that perfect commander is simply to look through a list of legendary creatures and stop when you find one that fits your fancy. However, in the meantime, here's a few commanders you might like:
Animar, Soul of Elements a popular starting EDH commander, tricolor and fairly easy to build.
Kaalia of the Vast another crowd-pleaser (well, for those running it)
Narset, Enlightened Master especially popular recently; this is creatureless usually so you may not like it
Doran, the Siege Tower so popular you've probably already seen it, I never ran this because I felt like it was too straightforward (everyone else has built decks with him)
For myself, I like running odd and offbeat commanders, but sometimes I just run with the crowd and try to build the best deck I can.
Fun side note: There's an EDH deck called the Judgebreaker based on exploiting weird card interactions. It's used to train judges who officiate at major games (well, sometimes). I can't find a good explanation online for all of the weird interactions in the deck, but they show up fast when the deck starts running.

One more thing: you'll want to read these rules before you continue to build Commander decks; they're a good starting point and go over a little bit of what the format is like.

Thanks for all the suggestions! I will keep this all in mind when I start building a new EDH deck, I really like Mikaeus, the Unhallowed. I've wanted to build a deck with him for quite a while.
Are there any other suggestions you'd give me for Awkward Family Reunion? I've not tested it at all and I wanted to make sure it works well enough before I start buying cards for it.

The Good Church vs. The Bad Church, match of the century.

Hahahaha xD this is a quick list I threw out. I may try to make it more flavorful and add more of a church theme at some point :D

The Priests of Norn is a great flavorful card.
I don't know how what other cards you could add though :P

Phyrexian Unlife - We worship evil things to become immortal. Something like that?

Phyrexian Unlife would be great, it's a very interesting card and combos amazingly with Melira, Sylvok Outcast!

I haven't been keeping up, but Weathered Wayfarer is really amazing to help with mana issues.

Mana issues haven't really been a problem for a while... although some more fixing and ramp wouldn't go amiss.
I'll replace my Gather the Townsfolk with some Weathered Wayfarers. I actually replaced my Mentor of the Meeks with those Gather the Townsfolk, maybe I've been playing him wrong but I never found Mentor of the Meek to be very helpful. I'll have to round up some money before I buy the three I need, $20.
May 10, 2015 8:01 a.m.
Mentor of the Meek is okay but at 3 mana I feel he isn't that good sometimes. Mayor of Avabruck Flip and Mentor of the Meek are a non-bo. They clash with each other.

All I have is a beast themed Surrak deck. It's alright. I just use it to have fun. I don't care about winning xD
