Under Construction

"If an effect would create one or more tokens under your control, it creates twice that many of those tokens instead.

If an effect would put one or more counters on a permanent you control, it puts twice that many of those counters on that permanent instead."

Doubling Season is as powerful as it is elegant. It was literally designed with saprolings in mind, featuring them in the art of its original printing in Ravnica: City of Guilds. It not only shortcuts our endgame by half, but opens several avenues to instant victory against a full table of players.

  • Winding Constrictor is an honorary Doubling Season for the purposes of +1/+1 counters here. While this doesn't open any infinite combos (I'm aware of), it makes our plan more efficient.
  • Song of Freyalise is mostly in the deck for the first two Saga triggers, but the final trigger can knock a single opponent out of the game in a pinch.
  • Mazirek, Kraul Death Priest is a win condition in himself, but can become so efficient as to be inconvenient to keep track of.
  • Nissa, Voice of Zendikar loves Doubling Season as much as any planeswalker, but she is more impacted than most because not only does she enter the battlefield with double loyalty counters, gain double from her +1, but her -2 renders double the +1/+1 counters across your entire board, and that's just neat-o.
  • Oran-Rief, the Vastwood is one of the few lands we run that enters the battlefield tapped, but for good reason. Its non-mana ability permanently doubles the size of most creatures in our deck, but can become devastating when multiplied further.
  • Mycoloth already reads " twice that many +1/+1 counters," so doubling that, as well as the the subsequent upkeep triggers, makes Mycoloth a must-answer threat that gets wildly out of control quickly.
  • Winding Constrictor is an honorary Doubling Season for the purposes of all other counters as well. The virulence of our fungal spore upkeep triggers increase, as well as one potentially game-ending artifact:
  • Smokestack creates and checks for soot counters, which not only multiplies from Doubling Season, but is boosted by our fav twisty snek. Smokestack can be backbreaking on its own, but stacking two, four, or more soot counters in one turn cycle can take many players off guard.
  • Glistening Oil unfortunately produces -1/-1 counters, which also double, but thankfully we can often stack +1/+1 counters on the same creature to remove them.
  • Deathspore Thallid is one of several cards that incrementally grow over the course of the game and must be answered early or eventually become overwhelming.
  • Elvish Farmer is no fungus, but his profession of choice has left him accumulating spores as though he were one.
  • Psychotrope Thallid has the potential to grown more saprolings, while also providing a little tidy card drawn in a pinch.
  • Thallid Germinator propagates lil' saprolings like the rest of these guys, but can also protect heavy cards in some situations by supplementing their stats.
  • Utopia Mycon is endless opportunity incarnate. Left on its own, it is both an army and a resource in one, and one of the best fungus ever printed.
  • Vitaspore Thallid might be quicker than most, but grows spores like the rest.
