The Gruulest Deck On The Block

Commander / EDH RG (Gruul) Theme/Gimmick

Trixerius

Sorcery (3)

Commander (1)

Commander: Ruric Thar, the Unbowed

Deck is part of a series of "Guild EDH" decks attempting to keep the flavorful spirit of one of Ravnica's guilds.

Originally this deck featured several cards with devour and a few green grafters to seriously pump incoming creatures and allow flexibility as to what power/toughness combination was desired for creatures played from hand. This was due to the fact that the deck revolved upon Wild Pair at the time and could make some very crazy progressions and very swingy plays.

When Gatecrash was released it caused some dissension in my playgroup because some felt that bloodrush was a fantastic ability for the deck since it allowed for more emphasis on power and toughness in general while others felt that it would draw the focus away from the decks then current route to victory essentially muddling the deck.

After a number of games using the original strategy I found that bloodrush had great synergy with bloodthirst but in a different manner than the synergy held by bloodthirst and devour.

I was torn because extensive playtesting had shown devour was the superior partner however with bloodrush in the deck it just felt so Gruul. I decided to remove the devour cards to make a Jund deck featuring bloodrush, devour, deathtouch, and morbid with a real survival of the fittest theme and ended up being happy with the decision. I also added Koth and a few landfall creatures in order to make the new Borborygmos a more appealing Commander.

When Dragon's Maze was released I fell instantly in love with Ruric-Thar as he felt like a build around Gruul commander that i basically already had the build around deck for. His synergy with bloodrush allowed me to either kill large numbers of creatures thinking they were blocking an easy juggernaut that was forced to attack or get some easy damage through even without a bloodrusher in my hands latter on in the game. Looking through my then decklist I found the majority of my non-creature spells were ramp. I instantly replaced them all with ramping creatures. With Borborygmos Enraged no longer the commander I took out landfall but kept some of the highlights from the lands-count theme regardless as they felt very good at telling the Gruul's territorial story.

This deck is the result of several years of changes and after playing it in it's newest form a few times I feel it is the Gruulest deck on the block and perfectly displays the spirit of the guild. It may seem a bit unorthodox and a few of the cards may feel under the bar for what is traditionally found in Commander but the spirit of the Gruul Clans as they charge into battle here is so thick that it more than makes up for the lack of power staples with a fantastic experience.
