Great Deck, +1I think that Thoughtseize and/or Inquisition of Kozilek would help to scout out scary things. Also Painful Truths might be a nice card draw engine.

I understand where you're coming from, but think of it as a card to power _other_emphasized text__creatures out and less as something to try to power out.

Blightning is perhaps the cruelest, most 'I hate you' cards in modern, would you consider using it?

Hey lagotripha love the Pentad Prism and Simian Spirit Guide. What would you drop for them? Some of the hand disruption?

Dursty not sure I'm understanding it properly but what advantage does Painful Truths offer over Sign in Blood or Night's Whisper?

Mtg_mill, love Utvara Hellkite but may be a bit 'win more'. Cmc also a bit high. Stuck it on the maybe list.

Bovine073, Blightning is a really flavorful Rakdos card, but we decided the cost + lack of instant speed meant it probably didn't fit a modern deck. V.cool card though.

Thanks everyone for their suggestions + feedback!

I think Hellkite Tyrant should for sure be in your SB for affinity! I also think Stormbreath Dragon is good enough for modern, and could be brought in from your SB against non-red decks. Immunity to path is really great in most matchups. I'd cut the Dismembers and a Pyroclasm to make space for them (Dismember b/c you have loads of removal already, 'clasm b/c which swarming decks are you worried about? Zoo mostly has 3+ toughness guys). This deck looks super-fun! +1!

Pentad Prism and Simian Spirit Guide are both best in combo decks like Ad Nauseam and Living Lore. They could help power out a threat, sure, but then what? usually one threat won't win a game. If you are worried about the opponent popping your heartless then maybe its best to just run more land so you wont need it later on, or run discard spells to clear the way for it to stick.

Painful Truths is not better in this deck than the other two draw cards. It costs more mana and requires a third color to make worth it. An argument was made that card quality is better than card advantage at the cost of some life and I would completely disagree with that notion because bob, aka Dark Confidant. Jund runs bob and he regularly deals 5-7 damage a game only drawing 3-4 cards. Jund is arguably one of the best decks in the format. On top of that Faithless Looting is ONLY seen in graveyard based decks such as Dredgevine or Storm.

Utvara Hellkite is definitely a win more at 8 mana. if it cost less it could be a value dragon for this list but since its cost is so high it is win more.

Hellkite Tyrant should be in the side board against affinity :D

Grave Titan is not good enough with heartless summoning.

Massacre Wurm would be cool as a 1 or 2 of.

Kokusho, the Evening Star is okay... kind of a do nothing 4/4 for 4 unless if it dies. I think it is probably just not good enough.

Hey GeminiSpartanX, awesomeragle. Just been tweaking the sideboard.

Wurmcoil Engine v burnMassacre Wurm v tokensHellkite Tyrant v affinityStormbreath Dragon v white

Any obvious matchups we're missing answers for? Infect? Bogles? Elves?

Agree on the Simian Spirit Guides. I've used them before to ramp and you just run out of steam.

GeminiSpartanX says... #9

The best thing against both Infect and Bogles is Spellskite. You can also bring it in against removal-heavy decks as well to protect your big guys.

I think it looks more or less fine. As far as SB strategy goes, Massacre Wurm should come in against affinity and elves as well as tokens. Generally when you are choosing cards to take out I would look at Dragonlord Kolaghan to cut first, followed by Kolaghan, the Storm's Fury because they only make you aggressive, they don't actually do anything other than attack. Spellskite comes in against boggles, twin, and infect. probably others but I'm not thinking of any more off the top of my head. Rakdos Charm gets cut for 1 Rending Volley and 1 Anger of the Gods to help sure up some of the problem match ups and I think you are good.

Cool thanks guys GeminiSpartanX awesomeragle really useful.

Anybody got any strong views on Tormenting Voice or Read the Bones? Just checking out other card draw and scry effects.

December 15, 2015 8:28 a.m.

I don't like either of those in this build. Maybe Read the Bones could fit in as a 1-of in place of the Faithless Looting that you have in there right now, but you're already running Night's Whisper which I think is the superior card in this deck. I'd personally cut the 1 Looting for a 3rd IoK if anything. Turn 1 you always want to rip a card from your opponent's hand, so I would rather slow your opponent in that way rather than try and out-CA them with hurtful draw spells.

I would do -1 Kolaghan's Command, -1 Faithless Looting, +2 Inquisition of Kozilek. Like GeminiSpartanX said, you want IoK turn 1. Then i would do -1 Dragonlord Kolaghan, -2 Underworld Cerberus, +3 Wurmcoil Engine.

You don't run that many creatures, so maybe Underworld Cerberus isn't the best choice? I think its better to play a creature like Wurmcoil Engine that help you win the game instead of a creature that eventually will give you some cards while also giving your opponent all their blockers back.

Actually, I would skip the whole dragon theme. There are much better creatures. How about a free 4/5 in form of Myr Superion? Havengul Lich gains you much bigger value from your graveyard than Underworld Cerberus. Phyrexian Metamorph is a clone of any creature for 1 mana. Tuktuk the Explorer dies directly giving you the token for 1 mana.

Thanks GeminiSpartanX. smackjack I take the point re: dragons and Underworld Cerberus. Guess I just like the dragon theme + the synergy with Cavern of Souls. Aware there's other builds using Heartless Summoning that use Havengul Lich, etc. so there's definitely a cool BU artifacts build to be done.

Guess I'm open to other people's thoughts. Even in early play testing what the dragons give is speed (haste), evasion (flying) and cumulative synergy. + dragons are cool, and I like running things you don't see that are a bit more personal, even if it's not the winningest deck

However great to have the discussion. I may change my tune if I scoop every game!!

awesomeragle says... #15

I mean, smackjack is correct. All of those suggestions are better than most of the creatures already being played. I just kinda thought this was a tribal deck so I tried to not veer too far from that lol.

December 15, 2015 10:50 a.m.

I think that going the dragons route is just fine. If you do decide to play some of the fatty, undercosted demons though, Desecration Demon would fit well in here as a 4/4 for 2 mana that can 'grow'. I really like the Tuktuk the Explorer idea though, since it's ok to play for 3 when you're searching for your Heartless Summoning.

Draw_Wurm says... #17

Thanks guys. Agree that smackjacks Tuktuk the Explorer idea is interesting. I think I may leave this one as loosely dragon tribal and then spin off a few other Heartless Summoning builds.

Based on smackjacks suggestions, + the older demon build of this deck I've brewed up a modern landfall deck based on Ob Nixilis, the Fallen and Heartless Summoning. See what you think:

I was inspired to build a Heartless Summoning deck of my own. I started with grixis but after all the cuts I realized I was only keeping red for Tuktuk the Explorer so I ended on U/B. Let me know what you think.

Ignore people running from Red. Red has HASTE, a way to benefit as soon as possible from your big dudes.

Thats a better way to play the card than simples U/B.

December 21, 2015 10:07 a.m.

Inferno Titan is another great creature that takes over the game if it sticks, and you get a useful ETB trigger at that. If it has haste from a Dragonlord Kolaghan, that's GG right there.

Hi all. Inspired by smackjack I tried a Tuktuk the Explorer + affinity brew as well.
