It's just that the way I play this deck, most of the time Serra Ascendant is just a 1/1 lifelink. Even in the previous iteration with 8 fetches and Emeria Angel spitting out flying tokens I'd rarely hit 30 life when I don't get the infinite combo. Maybe that means I'm not doing it right...I dunno.

Rite of Consumption to fling a really big pridemate if you just have chump blockers in your way

Crypt Ghast, Deathpact Angel and/or Azorius Charm?

@ dyl_o_ville what would you take out for Rite of Consumption ? I do feel like my removal is a little sparse for dealing with chumps and it would be nice on occasion. I'm not sure it's particularly efficient use of my resources when I could just continue attacking at my leisure.

@ redben346 This deck has gone through a couple of transitions as far as color has gone and it did run Azorius Charm for awhile. I don't actually plan to run any blue mana sources to cast it anymore though. As far as Crypt Ghast goes, I don't think I really need the ramp it provides. Finally, Deathpact Angel ...beautiful art, really cool card, not a big enough effect for modern. I don't know what I could swap out to make it functional. I think it's niche is mostly casual.

Thanks for the suggestions though guys! Feel free to make more if something else comes to mind!

Path of Bravery would help, just for the ability whenever you attack, you gain life equal to the number of attacking creatures

I find I'm often only attacking with one creature at a time. Maybe I'm doing it wrong without the anthems but I don't like sacrificing the removal and not willing to remove the combo. Phyrexian Metamorph is so good.

What would you suggest I remove?

Okay personally I think you should attack with more then one at a time depending on how many you have out. You want to make sure you have blockers if need be. I do like Phyrexian Metamorph

I don't like Path to Exile unless you are exiling the tokens from Shrine of Loyal Legions but even then you have Lingering Souls

I guess I am saying either cut Path to Exile or Shrine of Loyal Legions

Another crazy idea is cut both of them and add in Precinct Captain and/or Fiendslayer Paladin

Sorry I am not much help haha I only play standard pretty much

You know Shrine of Loyal Legions does seem to be on the chopping block, it's more of a late game, win-more card. Usually after 2 turns I have 4 or five counters on it though so I can pop it turn five or six to gain me a bunch of life...I'm just not sure.

Path to Exile is arguably the best removal spell in the format. Ive been looking at Harm's Way as a potential substitute (or complement) because I hate giving them a land when I really just want to kill a mana dork or something. I guess that's where the Orzhov Charm s come in but still...I don't feel like I have enough removal.

upvoted! I like the deck. Tried to plan something similar, but I was always undecided as to whether I should include Ranger of Eos and Serra Ascendant because of the synergy with Orzhov Charm . Also, I always felt like Archangel of Thune 's mana cost was at odds with the curve of the rest of the deck. I can definitely see her as something to curve out into, but 3 copies would be too much in my books.

One more point if I may. One of the best parts of the original Leonin Relic-Warder + Phyrexian Metamorph combo was its tight, mono-coloured mana base. I can reckon that the 2 basic swamps and the vault of the archangel are probably hindering your chances of a turn 3 combo because of leonin's double white casting cost...

Anyways, nice deck!

Also mentor of the meek, while a pet card of mine, isn't really good enough if this is a competitive deck. He's quite flavorful, but just not as powerful as some of the other cards on this list. I would run 4 copies of lingering souls.

In relation to Archangel of Thune , 21 lands isn't enough.

with 21 lands, 60 cards in the deck, you've got a 47% chance of 3 land in your opening hand of 7 cards. If you're going to play with the archangel and with the extra 3 drops I would run an extra one at least (and drop the vaults). Windbrisk heights is a much better land than vault of the archangel. Even though it comes in tapped, if you bring it in after declare attackers and you have one or more soul sisters on the battlefield you get to pump all your dudes before they declare blockers (and you get to cast her for like 2cmc)

Sorry for all the comments x)

First off, thanks for the +1!

I don't seem to have a problem dropping the combo turn three when I have all three in hand. That being said, between the Marsh Flats , Godless Shrine s and Isolated Chapel I don't really need the two basic swamps. I'll probably squeeze them out for two copies of Windbrisk Heights . I just find that I don't often attack with the Sisters because I like them to be alive...unless I have an Orzhov Charm in hand. I'm also thinking of going down to 1 copy of Vault of the Archangel . I really like the effect, but I'd never want more than one. Then I have room for another Plains. That will bring me up to 22.

I've been thinking that Mentor of the Meek is unnecessary for awhile now too. It's like...run another Lingering Souls and get likely 4 creatures or play Mentor of the Meek and maybe draw one or two cards. Makes sense. I think for now though, I'd stick with 3 copies of Lingering Souls and 3 copies of Shrine of Loyal Legions . The few times I've used the Shrine it's exploded for 5-7 tokens within a couple of turns. I figure if it eats an Abrupt Decay that's one less pointed at an Ajani's Pridemate or even just a Relic-Warder. Thanks again for the input!

Soul Sisters is meant for mono-white and adding all these extra colors just slows the deck down

December 22, 2013 12:24 p.m.

MindAblaze says... #15

Mono-white Soul Sisters is narrow, predictable and easy to disrupt. There are too many spots that are inflexible and it can't properly respond to the opponent preboard. Post board the deck doesn't function as well as it should because too many essential pieces have been removed to interact with the opponents strategy.

Archangel of Thune changes the way this deck plays and you have to adapt the strategy to more of a midrange build. Most midrange decks beat aggro because their creatures are bigger. My strategy is to beat aggro by slowing them with life gain and killing specific threats until I can drop an Angel into a field of 1/1s and give them all counters. I realize it's narrow, but it's still more flexible than overextending into a sweeper.

Sanguine Bond ? this decklist looks really solid though, +1

June 21, 2014 4:46 p.m.

MindAblaze says... #19

Sanguine Bond is one of my favorite cards and it's a win condition in my deck Nissa's Chosen but here I feel it's too dependent on a particular board state. It would be a nice way to incrementally bleed my opponents out but my gut tells me it's too slow here.

Thanks for the suggestion and the appreciation!
