Sideboard

WELCOME

This is the list I'm currently playing for SOI standard, a format I've getting back into since Innistrad is my favorite plane and I love playing Collected Company in Modern.

It's a value creatures build, and I've been quite happy with it so far. This deck can out-value and out-grind everything else I've seen in the long game, and it's pretty good at defending early on.

The sideboard is built to combat aggro (typically Humans) Collected Company decks (typically Bant), and ramp decks (typically GR eldrazi), all of which have already shown up in the format.

  • Playing Duskwatch Recruiter   on turn 2 and then activating it on your turn 3 is a powerful line if you want to ramp out 2 or more creatures on turn 4.
  • It can be tempting to cast Collected Company during your opponent's combat to get surprise blockers, but if your opponent is playing board wipes then it is often better to just wait until the end of their turn.
  • If you're getting flooded with lands in the late game and you've already got 6 or 7 lands in play, it's a good idea to save one or two in your hand in case you draw a Tireless Tracker.
  • Always play a tapped land on turn 1 if you have it -- there are no 1 drops in this deck, and there's no reason to represent one. It's better to have smooth mana on turns 2 and 3.
  • It's okay to be aggressive with removal, especially if you have a Den Protector in hand. This deck wants to get in as much damage as it can early on since most of the creatures aren't evasive.
  • Because they are the only evasive threats, Den Protector and Bygone Bishop are the best targets for counters from Dromoka's Command if you're on the offensive.
I've opted not to play blue for now primarily because of budget restrictions (Jace, Vryn's Prodigy  ), but I also believe that this deck is slightly better in the long game. The biggest loss is Reflector Mage, and I'm still considering splashing for it alongside Bounding Krasis, Lumbering Falls, and some sideboard cards. However, I'm not convinced that it would be a huge improvement. The deck would have worse mana and would be less capable of beating ramp strategies.

Feel free to comment and +1 if you like the deck!

Updates Add

I've been working on this list pretty much constantly, and I'm really liking where it's at now. The addition of Nissa, Vastwood Seer  Flip has been a huge boon, and I'm considering adding a second copy. The sideboard has been tweaked to deal with the current metagame.
