I made an account just to discuss my experience with this deck with you.First off, I love grixis control and this deck works wonderfully while still staying within a very affordable price range.

I feel that with the May 30th changes that it does make the control more consistent, but personally I think you should run more pyroclasms/anger of the gods side board against aggro match ups, or even Control the Meek.

Also I just like planeswalkers in control decks, and Nico was just a big wincon. If you don't use him, would you suggest keeping Chandra?

May 31, 2015 2:22 a.m.

I thought Chandra would be much better. I took Bolas out because I am okay with casting Aetherling without counter mana up. And Ultimatum the same. Bolas, as good as it is, I need Spell Snares and just haven't got them yet.

How's your deck coming along?

And that's awesome for joining to discuss

I'd say if you can't buy spell snares, you can just use mana leak because it's beyond obnoxious against every single spell you don't like.

As for planeswalkers, you can try putting in Jace, Architext of Thought. I think he can be pretty funny against aggro matchups AND fact or fictions.

His ult is just icing on the cake.

I like baby Jace. I don't mind ticking him up for 3 or 4 more cards. If the opponents want to bolt him or attack him. It saves that from my 20 LIFE.

Obviously never using the ultimate is a drawback

Baby Jace's ult is trash really, you use him for the 3 card draw for 3 mana, which is nice, or he acts like a meat shield for a bit.

Architect of Thought is nice as using his ult or not doesn't make his card less effective.

Also you might consider sideboarding dreadbore, it's just terminate at sorcery speed but it can kill planeswalkers too.

May 31, 2015 5:33 p.m.

Yeah I have thought about Dreadbore.

I'm sure there's room.

My biggest problems are (is) burnSo I load up the Duress and Dispels.

Rakdos Charm because of all the delve.

Dreadbore is definitely a sideboard option, I would never mainboard it because it's just not as useful as terminate.

You can also try running Hero's Downfall instead of Dreadbore, but I don't think it's worth the extra mana for instant speed.

I definitely agree duress and dispels are fine.

Rakdos Charm is pretty much a necessity in Modern, either it kills an artifact or delve, both of which you just see way too often in the format.

I also very much like the 1 AEtherling, the less wincons a control deck has, the better.

June 1, 2015 12:31 p.m.

Yeah I'm not a huge fan of Hero's Downfall or Dismember for that matter. If I can't kill a creature without losing life meh.

I will add Dreadbore though. And I just love Aetherling

I got to thinking that 1 AEtherling MAY be a bit risky since he is your only wincon essentially.

Also with Tasigur there's a chance you'll chump him and your opponent just wont let you have the AEtherling back.

I would say if you run Tasigur, run more Aetherlings.

June 7, 2015 1:54 p.m.

Tasigur is a test right now too.I may go back to Aetherling and Bolas.

I've been playtesting it and it's really, really solid right now.

Tasigur puts a ton of pressure on the enemy, because you'll always have more spells to cast.

And besides, I remember you can cruel ultimatum Aetherling back into your hand, so it'll work out if you end up chucking him.

I forgot to add, I switched the mainboard duress with mana leak and have had reasonable success with it, but I don't know if I will keep that change.

June 9, 2015 3:06 a.m.

You know, I have considered adding a Mana Leak to the deck as a 5th Rune Snag sort of. The card draw is great with Ultimatum when I grab Mulldrifter too.

I think I'm going to buy this decklist tomorrow and take it to friday night soon, that'd be the best way to test it out.

As it stands I think I'll take out the mainboard duress because mana leak is just too good.

June 9, 2015 11:58 a.m.

Do they play Modern at your spot?

June 9, 2015 12:25 p.m.

The only thing is my mana base is not tournament ready. If you've got the right lands already, it's very inexpensive to buy the rest.

Inquisition probably the most money. Hope you have bolts....

Oh wait Modern Masters. Lucky

June 9, 2015 12:28 p.m.

But you have inspired me to junk the filler Duress

June 9, 2015 12:30 p.m.

beaterbutter says... #19

I have to buy the whole thing, this will be my first modern deck.

As for lands, I don't think the shock lands will ever leave the deck list and they're the most expensive, so I'm not worried since the others are dirty cheap.

Duress should still stay sideboard, I think it's neat and does good against certain matchups, but in mainboard I just kept finding it a dead card in other matchups.

Also lastly I had no issues with mana ever. I might switch one of the Sulfur falls for the blue black one but they're both super cheap so it doesn't bother me.

June 9, 2015 12:51 p.m.

Cool man! The good thing is almost all the cards are viable for many many modern decks.

Cruel Control as a starter huh?Big timer lol.

I started with Mono White Knights.

And swore I would never play control...

June 9, 2015 5:59 p.m.

Check different sites. EBay sometimes has really good deals on NM lands

Ya, I've been doing a ton of research on modern and grixis control just interests me the most.

I'm not much of a control player because of the big bucks needed to play them in standard, but in modern it doesn't rotate out so it'll make sense dropping money on a deck like this.

And hey, control is fun to play, it's a totally different mindset when playing then say, an affinity deck.

June 9, 2015 6:19 p.m.

Yeah brotha! I wish you the best!
