THIS DECK IS A WORK IN PROGRESS. SUGGESTIONS AND COMMENTS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED

"I hope that Jhoira's a decent captain. I can hear a storm brewing." - Rosy Dumplings, comment section of MTG Salvation spoiler page.

Well said, unknown person on the internet. I hear the exact same thing!

With the recent Dominaria leak, we commander players got the opportunity to start brewing a little extra early. This deck is built around the not yet released Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain.

Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain

Legendary Creature - Human Artificer

Whenever you cast a historic spell, draw a card. (Artifacts, legendaries, and Sagas are historic.)

The new Jhoira offers something new for a commander, she draws us cards whenever we cast historic spells, i.e. the new 'saga' enchantments, legendary spells, and perhaps most importantly artifacts. She is basically a strictly better blue-red Vedalken Archmage, but legendary, meaning that we commander players can practically start every game with a Vedalken Archmage in hand. Sweet!

So, how do we take advantage of her ability? Well, first of all, let's fill the deck up with as many artifacts and legendary spells as we possibly can! Let's make sure that pretty much every time we play a spell, we draw a card! Secondly, we want to cast as many spells as possible. So, let's make 'em cheaper! Thankfully, artifacts have gotten plenty cost reduction effects over the years, with cards such as Etherium Sculptor, Foundry Inspector, Herald of Kozilek, Semblance Anvil, Mycosynth Golem, and even the very fitting, freshly spoiled card Jhoira's Familiar. Now, were getting close to having an engine. Play cards cheaply, draw cards to play cheaply, rinse and repeat.

Playing a bunch of spells and drawing a bunch of cards is fine and dandy, but where is that going to lead us? There are many different routes to take when trying to weaponize Jhoira's ability. One possiblity is to weaponize our card draw with cards such as Psychosis Crawler and Niv-Mizzet, the Firemind. Another is to make use of artifact ETBs, which Reckless Fireweaver does nicely. Finally, we can take the general storm approach with cards such as Aetherflux Reservoir and Ignite Memories to deal massive amounts of damage at once.

However, sometimes the immense board presence itself should be enough. Make your army of metal dudes indestructible with Darksteel Forge and turn them sideways!

Work in progress.

Sensei's Divining Top+Jhoira, Weatherlight Captain+Etherium Sculptor (or any other card reducing the cost of artifacts)

  • Use Sensei's Diving Top's draw ability to draw a card and put it on top of your library.
  • Play an artifact/legendary spell to redraw Top with Jhoira.
  • Cast Top for free and draw a card with Jhoira, netting you an extra card draw per artifact/legendary cast.
Work in progress.

Note to self: add "Jhoira's Familiar". Placeholder: Anvilwrought Raptor.
