Desecration Demon ? Massive body for 4 mana, flying, exactly what you need to bring the beats?

@gacde I was considering desecration demon, but it doesn't do what I need my 4-drop slot to do, so I'm using Haunted Plate Mail as my 4-drop. Plate is better vs control and is harder to remove.

That's a bit bold calling it the new meta, don't you think? I haven't lost to a dimir deck in ages because dimir isn't really a thing anymore. Try playtesting vs Selesnya Hexproof/Lifegain or Crazy Counter Spam or Pure Evolution, three very different decks.

@Drfrozenfire - I just finished playtesting against those decks you linked, beat them all fairly easily. The hardest deck was the selesnya hexproof deck, but I run 3 devour flesh, 4 ratchet bomb, 3 syncopate and 4 thoughtseize which all work very effectively against that deck.

I'd be curious about replacing Opportunity with Nightveil Specter .

BigBear in his deck I'd say Opportunity is better because getting to six mana isn't too much of a problem in his deck. It's easier to just draw four cards, I'm not sure he can use the exiled cards with Pack Rat because pack rat tells you to discard them, and Nightveil Specter only says you can play them. (idk). One last thing is that Haunted Plate Mail works best with no other creatures.

I know that he can't use the exiled cards with Pack Rat . I was just curious if Nightveil Specter would've been a better option to add a little extra flying damage that can be done while also being another way to possibly get a land over to your side, adding a little extra mana ramp.

Nonetheless, I see what you are saying about the overall capability to get mana out on the board with this setup. I like it a lot.

Also, Haunted Plate Mail just seems like an awesome way to help support Mutavault in getting that swing at the opponent for some serious potential damage. Between the two of them, 6 damage is nothing to joke about. I would definitely want to hit with those only when the enemy has nothing on the battlefield as well as when I KNOW they will hit.

I'm loving the synergy of this deck, though. Definitely going to have to build it. Just need some Hero's Downfall , Thoughtseize , and two more Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver .

Possible change - Changing Opportunity to Divination , thoughts?

It depends on how many situations you've been in where you needed to draw more cards, had Opportunity in your hand, and not enough mana to play it.

Altar's Reap might be good because of your lack of creatures, and if you have Pack Rat or your flyer you can just use it as hexproof or another pack rat.

I played a very similar deck to this just last night lol, I was playing my maze's end turbofog. The first game I lost super hard to ashiok. I had better luck g2 and g3 because I added in instant speed removal and planeswalker hate. Overall I thought it was really scary and it's probably the hardest deck I've had to play against so far, since ashiok needs an answer or I'm losing. +1 from me. Playtest against the deck if you'd like!

Lol, I played a similar deck at my fnm, It was pretty good, but my American, No girls in the Pillow Fort! beat it.

The thing about having Opportunity in the deck is that it works both ways in terms of the word itself. If you have it in your hand and just aren't seeing the mana for it to come out, but you have a couple of Pack Rat and Mutavault on the board, then why not discard it and use it for a Pack Rat token?

I went and playtested this deck about 20 times last night. I like it a lot. It's nasty and mean. I played it against a red/white weenie deck, my green devo deck, and a mono-black deck. The mono-black gave me some troubles, and those matches went about half and half (3-2 with me leading).

Nonetheless, definitely some nice stuff.

I don't think this deck is good vs mono black gayvotion. I playtested it and it is definitely the hardest match-up. And we also see your loss 0:2 was vs this.

@acheronn --- The thing about mono-black matchup is that monoblack has more powerful card draw than this deck and it's 4-5 drop threats are just more powerful. Desecration demon out-classes plate mail and gary is completely more powerful than sphinx.

The difference is that this deck has access to counterspells and ratchet bomb, which can take care of underworld connections and pack rat.

In the mirror match between 2 mono-black players, normally the winner is whoever resolved a pack rat with mana open. This deck doesn't have that same weakness, just different ones.

On the note of replacing opportunity, this discussion has convinced me that I need to replace opportunity with Read the Bones , it's faster than underworld connections and it can dig deeper.

I find this to be similar to my Desecrate the Mind (Black Control)I agree about Pack Rat , great defense against aggro decks. I should incorporate Ratchet Bomb in my side board. I do use my creatures to assist with control though instead of relying solely on instant's and sorcery's and use discards instead of counters, that way it helps build board presence while still maintaining control and the opponent can't do much without a hand.

Might I suggest additional Pithing Needle 's vs MBD. I would swamp 3x Ashiok, Nightmare Weaver for 3x Pithing Needle . Remove from sideboard 1x Gainsay and 1x Dimir Charm .

Meaning add 2x Pithing Needle to sideboard.

I like the idea of Read the Bones .

Read the Bones is a strong card, but when you are already considering shock lands as well as Thoughtseize , you are talking about a LOT of life loss potential for this to work out without having a whole lot of aggro threat.

I actually playtested this with Divination , and it felt a LOT better than Opportunity . Unfortunately, I also found myself having trouble throwing a discard to pop out some Pack Rat tokens unless I have a plate mail in my hand, solely because Divination felt fairly powerful.

Nonetheless, if we're talking about overall speed, Read the Bones will definitely be better speed all around, and I think it has some fairly good synergy with Prognostic Sphinx . If you can swing with a Prognostic Sphinx to scry for 3, then get to arrange your cards the way you need, Read the Bones gives you a second scry chance to dig deeper and then pull two cards you REALLY want.

I'll playtest with it and see how it feels.

Well i have a pretty stupid question about the "Haunted Plate Mail" ; It says that it cant swing in when creature are on your board, so double Haunted Plate Mail doesnt work at the same time right ? And what about the mutavault, it's not working also ?
