Brutal in blue.

I started playing Magic around 2013 and the first EDH deck I ever played was the Teferi 2014 pre-con. "It plays like a green deck" was how it was described, and yes I brought out a series of monsters from the deep while Teferi, Temporal Archmage provided cards and mana.

But even before that, one of the earliest multiplayer games we played featured 5 60-card decks, monocoloured only, one for each colour. We were all milled to death by Stasis plus Frozen AEther and a Chronatog .

Recently I put together a version of Chain Veil Teferi for a birthday special, and had fun with it. But I wanted to make it more my own before playing it again, and that's when I decided to add some Painter's Servant lines for extra dimensions of fun.

Combos

The Chain Veil lies at the heart of the deck, allowing a win through multiple activations of Teferi's -1 ability netting positive mana. When Teferi dies and is recast, he gains all the previous Chain Veil activations, and creates a longer sequence each time. Ultimately this creates infinite mana and draws the deck; then typically it wins by multiple activations of Ugin, the Spirit Dragon 's +1 ability to fireball all opponents. See Labmaniacs S1 episode 7 for an example.

The traditional back-up win involved Blue Sun's Zenith but I took it out because it's not great in regular play until X = 4 or more. Now there's some new alternate win-setups:

• Grindstone + Painter's Servant mills one player to death (why bother removing permanents when you can remove the player?)
• Painter's Servant + Ugin, the Spirit Dragon exiles all lands leaving Ugin on the board
• Painter's Servant + Wash Out bounces everything, like the banned Upheaval , which is useful if it's your main phase and you can float some extra mana too.

Plus some classic blue combos:

• Basalt Monolith + Rings of Brighthearth plus e.g. Urza, Lord High Artificer or Sensei's Divining Top to draw / cast everything in the deck
• Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter plus e.g. Jace's Archivist until you find Narset, Parter of Veils , or simply a Grindstone

Stax

Only 3 cards but that's all that's needed. Muddle the Mixture finds Stasis and with Teferi on the board that shuts the game down while you assemble the win. In the early game Winter Orb is generally a better option, and even easier to tutor.

Opening Hand

The opening hand of hands: Island , Mana Vault , Dramatic Reversal + Isochron Scepter , Mana Crypt , Grindstone . Add a Tormod's Crypt for good measure in case anyone has a big Eldrazi in their library.

But failing that card draw, a counter and a mana rock is a great place to start.
