Hey there! I love mill. It seems to be many players' least favorite ways to lose, and as such it's one of my favorite archetypes to win with. I've found that I have the most trouble against hyper-fast aggro decks, which is why I've included Darkness and Crypt Incursion in my main deck. Darkness is a black fog effect that was reprinted in Timeshifted; not many players know about it so it is often unexpected. The focus of my own mill deck is to mill opponents out as fast as wizardly possible, but since your deck is a little more midrange-y, you may want to consider sideboarding some sweep effects, such as Damnation , Black Sun's Zenith , or even Cyclonic Rift . You might need them to slow your opponents down.

I'm not sure how effective Walking Archive would be in the format. I would consider swapping those out for some Jace's Phantasm s, but if you really want the card draw then try using Duskmantle Seer .

I know they're expensive, but Glimpse the Unthinkable is possibly the best mill spell ever printed. Breaking is a decent budget alternative to this. I also recommend running at least 3 Mind Funeral .

What is your metagame like? Are you going to be playing against very competitive decks?

Another thing you might want to consider is the Duskmantle Guildmage + Mindcrank infinite mill combo, using card draw to find your combo pieces and protecting yourself with removal, discard, and counter magic. But beware of eldrazi! Main 4 Surgical Extraction s! Extirpate is another option if you need more redundancy.

Finally, give some thought to Mesmeric Orb . It has won me many a game.

Hope my input helps you out! +1 for mill!

Mostly we end games around turns 5-8.. But I'm starting to see more removal.. My other mill deck Arkham is great, but I want this one to be very different. I was thinking of using heavy draw to abuse Jace's Erasure while going me more access to mill and control spells.

I'm kind of liking Walking Archive he makes me draw faster, the opponent too, which means they cut through their deck quicker.. One could argue that letting them draw more cards would be I'll advised.. But Jace's Erasure and Jace's Archivist do well when it comes to making their draw useless... Well combine that with all the control in the deck.

I like it.. I will def plus one this.. As mentioned above.. I have found the addition of Damnation to be extremely helpful in my mill deck. Also for this(and i normally would not suggest this card unless used in a combo with Traumatize )i would suggest to swap out the Elixir for Psychic Spiral get the most out of returning your yard to your library at instant speed plus mill. the only drawback of it is it is dead in hand early game whereas the Elixir is always a sweet card no matter when you draw it up. I think Crypt Incursion is a must here so good job there. its graveyard hate against cards likeBloodghast which can be a nightmare for mill decks.. not to mention Emrakul. I like the combo of Evolving Wilds with the Hedron Crab thats a nice little two for. I have also started running Surgical Extraction in my mill as it is devastating to decks relying on win cons that you mill a one of early on. Grisly Spectacle is such a fun card. If only it did not have such a high CMC i would run it in my ALL my mill decks. Love the flavor text.. Dimir Charm certainly hold its own in this deck as well with all three choices being viable. Good Job here.

I don't know why I didn't think of Nephalia Drownyard earlier. It's really effective in a control shell.

What turn are you normally casting Mind Funeral ? Would Mind Grind be a better mana sink mid/late-game? And how about 1 or 2 Oboro, Palace in the Clouds for more landfall?

Quadsimotto

Originally I ran Mind Grind in the early prototypes.. Used Crypt Ghast and Realmwright to earn extra mana and make it easier to cast Consecrated Sphinx and the like.. But I felt like it took too long to set up.. It was just a little fragile too. I LOVE Psychic Spiral but I worry, is it maybe a bit pricey? I realize that I'm only really going to play it after a substantial number of turns.. So odds are I'd have the mana.. What do you think? Worth it?

spentbullets

Nephalia Drownyard I've been looking for a good deck for this card, I just don't want to accidentally tie up my mana.

I'd like to hit them with Mind Funeral on T3 but it doesn't really matter which turn. The second I get it I use it.

This is the type of deck i would use it in. I was actually going to suggest you swap one for one on the Grisly Spectacle but you already did it. Try it out with some testing and let me know how it flows. Its such a minor change you may never even notice it.

I think that you should swap some higher costing cards. Mill is most effective done fast. You have a lot going here, but it seems like you have some cards that are just slowing you down early on. Namely Mind Unbound (I love this card but it's just too slow in this type of deck), Psychic Spiral & Grisly Spectacle (2 or 3 maybe, but I would consider something cheaper for the last 1 or 2).

All-in-all good concept. +1 here. How's it been playing?

November 30, 2013 8:42 p.m.

I mean, even you stated that your average games are only lasting 5-8 turns... so some games you aren't even getting Mind Unbound into play... average longer games, you're paying 6 mana for 3 cards (played on turn six, activate 1 card on turn 7, 2 cards turn 8). Much better to go with Visions of Beyond . It'll play much better early on and your games aren't lasting long enough to make Mind Unbound better :P Plus it'll help drop your Avg CMC.

As always, my milling brethren, you speak nothing but wisdom... I wish I could have kept those Damnation in.. But they're a little too expensive for me.

Have you been keeping an eye on my Best Modern Mill: Jace's Grinding Machine? I haven't done much in a lil while though... I'm eyeing using the Jace's Erasure and Jace's Archivist

I've seen them in your maybe board. Were you thinking of using them in a devious way? Do share.

I know he dies to every form of removal there is.. But what about Elite Arcanist ?

spentbullets says... #15

Have you thought about using Liliana's Caress as a way to deal damage via Jace's Archivist ?

December 1, 2013 12:18 p.m.

denijsx90 says... #16

I just really like the idea of Surgical Extraction every turn.. Or Visions of Beyond ?

December 1, 2013 12:33 p.m.

denijsx90 says... #17

I didn't think I had enough discard cards make that really worth while?

December 1, 2013 12:56 p.m.

spentbullets says... #18

Yeah, I suppose if you ran more Jace's Archivist s and/or other Windfall effects, then Liliana's Caress would be a lot more valuable. As it stands, I guess it wouldn't be worthwhile. It does sound like an interesting idea to build around: Liliana's Caress , Megrim , Thoughtseize , Jace's Archivist , Whispering Madness something to think about!

Re: Elite Arcanist, he might be worth a slot if you can mill enough in the early turns to get Visions of Beyond online. He may die to every removal spell ever printed, but I see Hedron Crab and Jace's Archivist being more likely targets for removal.

Seems pretty solid so far, I'll build it here in the next few days. Play testing went very well though.

sooooo....Who wants to discuss Notion Thief and whether or not it has a place in this deck?

December 10, 2013 9:12 a.m.

denijsx90 says... #21

And if so, should we revisit Psychosis Crawler ?

December 10, 2013 10 a.m.

I feel like I'm missing something; You have plains in your deck, but I can't find anything that uses white mana. Am I just not seeing a card that uses it, or...?

December 10, 2013 6:35 p.m.

denijsx90 says... #23

its just to occassionally add counters to the Walking Archive

December 10, 2013 6:40 p.m.

M1kee says... #24

nice deck bro! so which lands are you fetching for with Evolving Wilds ?..plains?..just wondering cause i've gotten a few suggestions of running Temple of Deceit instead of fetch-lands..

December 12, 2013 11:49 p.m.

denijsx90 says... #25

The fetchlands are mostly for Hedron Crab . I like to double landfall people.. Makes me warm on the inside.
