I feel like this deck really wants Restoration Angel in some number.

PlattBonnay - In a non-budget build, maybe. But even then, the one I've eyed building would run Collected Company and whiff on Restoration Angel.

Awesome deck! Do you have a list for non-budget? How about Eldrazi Displacer?

Hey, Iksar, thanks!

Eldrazi Displacer looks interesting but the colorless requirement on its ability is limiting. Maybe if I ran a couple more Caves to make it easier to use.

Looking at Oath, I do like Wall of Resurgence, though. Blinking a 0/6 body that creates 3/3 haste manlands could be killer.

For non budget I'd recommend checking out this Abzan list that inspired this deck:

+1 for the hilarious description.

For the actual decklist - I like the Sagu Mauler in here, though 4x may be a bit much since you really need to blink him to be good. Card is terrifying though!

Citadel Siege - what? Why is this in here - you can play better cards, especially noncreature stuff, say removal, discard. Combo'ing Tidehollow Sculler with Wasteland Strangler seems like better removal? Wasteland Strangler is also pretty cheap (esp. compared with the otherwise innocent looking Wall of Omens).

Another thought that probably doesn't work well - Ghostway over Momentary Blink? Sounds like a way to get those Sagu Maulers out

Thanks, hubatish!

Citadel Siege has worked to help boost or remove blockers, but for a deck like this it really is just filler (like the single Sibsig Muckdraggers who needs to go somewhere else).

I really like Wasteland Strangler and the price has kept me out (don't have 6 tickets for a set). I think it works best in an AEther Vial/Collected Company build but it's not a bad call here either. I may make the investment, I really like what it can do.

Problem with Ghostway is sometimes I don't want the board to blink, especially if a Tidehollow Sculler or Fiend Hunter is sitting on something nice. But for five morphs I have 12 blink effects to play with in Cloudshift, Momentary Blink and Flickerwisp. I think if I were running more morphs I'd consider Ghostway or splashing blue in the mana to reuse Momentary Blink.

id add in some islands ti flash back momentary blink and maybe a few Evolving Wilds

bigpappyj says... #8

shadow63 interesting call. Do you think evolving will slow this down at all?

Also, non-budget consideration is a set of AEther Vials. Set is only 20 tickets on MTGO so not terrible (and I already have them).

itll slow it down in the early game but if the game goes longer itll help you out as you will draw fewer lands

bigpappyj says... #11

True, and late game is when I'd need it the most for those Momentary Blinks again.

I've been trying to build a budget blink deck for awhile, and as that fails, this looks amazing. +1!

Thanks, lapandas. If you're looking for a budget swap for Wall of Omens you can go with Wall of Resurgence. I'm testing that a bit on here and looking forward to giving it a go on MTGO. Yeah, more expensive, but also more aggro since you're passing on the card draw for building a potentially monster manland. May be something that fits better in a non-budget AEther Vial or Collected Company build, though.

Splashing blue (as you mentioned to me) gives you access to Mulldrifter, which has an incredible synergy with blink. Same goes for any creature with evoke. You could also look into playing Shriekmaw, when you're already in black. Neither of those are expensive.

bigpappyj says... #15

Rathaelix - Good call on both, especially Shriekmaw. In the current meta, he could wreck some Eldrazi, especially if I can bounce him around.

February 9, 2016 10:16 p.m.

bigpappyj says... #16

Honestly, Shriekmaw is perfect. I've been looking for a second Fiend Hunter style creature and this is great. Cast for evoke, Cloudshift before with the sac on the stack and that's two kills and one Maw on the board!

+1 for the description

To add to the splash blue conversation; it would give you access to Ghostly Flicker, for more instant speed bounce.

Color order convention hint:

In the two color combination of white and black, white comes first.

Take for example a look at your Caves of Koilos, or Tidehollow Sculler.
So it wouldn't be BW Blink, but WB Blink.

Zerpha - Thanks for the heads up. I went off of how I typically see decks like Tokens listed (I've always seen B/W Tokens, not W/B Tokens). I guess it should go in order of placement on the color wheel, right?

@bigpappyj Ah I see. You're right, that is the more whitespread term for this kind of deck.

I guess the player who originally popularized the deck didn't care much about Wizards official color order.

"I guess it should go in order of placement on the color wheel, right?"

Yes, that's one aspect. (It used to be the only one back then in Legends. take a look at the Elder Dragons for example: Chromium or Nicol Bolas has the order we're used to, while Palladia-Mors wouldn't start with white if she was printed today.)

It's easy once you understand the idea. As a reference, look at the color wheel on the card's back. When choosing the order, there are two things to consider:

  • Start at the top (white) going clockwise: ----- (W-U-B-R-G-W)
  • Search for the cycle with the lowest distance among used colors.

That way, throughout all combinations we always have the same amount of occurenced where colors "rank" first or second.

So for example, if the colors are white and black (), you would go W-U-B, as this has only one other color in between whereas B-R-G-W has two colors in between. If the colors were white and red however (), you'd go R-G-W, as otherwise there would be U and B in between: W-U-B-R

To get back to our green-centric Elder Dragon: Palladia-Mors has white, green, and red in her. So checking the color wheel order, we want to choose the order RGW (W-U-B-R-G-W) - as opposed to WRG (W-U-B-R-G-W), which has each color adjacent to each other unlike if we started with W, skipped blue and black, and then added green and red.

Zerpha says... #22

Btw, the wedge cards from Khans of Tarkir are an exception to this rule - here, the color the clan is centered around comes first, ignoring the usual color order rule.

Compare Jeskai Ascendancy with the regular order on Zedruu the Greathearted for example.

Why play Viscera Seer instead of something else with a sweet etb effect, like Blade Splicer?

May 27, 2016 9:02 p.m.

bigpappyj says... #24

First hesitation on Blade Splicer is cost for a budget build. But even outside of that, this deck lacks cheap creatures, so Viscera Seer provides a cheap chump but also a vehicle for the rare times I want to perma-exile something with an upside if I want to sac Tidehollow or Fiend Hunter while they're on the stack and before their ETB resolves.

Admittedly, in a non-budget build its often sided out Game 2.

May 27, 2016 9:11 p.m.

bigpappyj says... #25

wasianpower - admittedly, this reminds me that I am on the hunt for cheap creatures with fun ETB effects. The curve on this deck can be a pain at times, though it's not awful. And thanks for the suggestion!
