bigpappyj how does this deck do at the local game stores?

MasterMan123 - unfortunately I don't get out to the LGS often enough to give this a run in paper yet. All my playing has been on MTGO where it's been a lot of fun in the casual rooms. Testing a less budget build with a sideboard that I hope to put through a league soon.

I'll let you know if I get it in the wild, though. I have it in paper, just need to get time for games.

How do you cast akroma, angel of fury

August 2, 2016 11:51 p.m.

lagotripha says... #5

You cast her as a morph for 3, then blink her so she reenters unmorphed.

looky2003 what lagotripha said. It's gimmick typically found in older mono-white hatebear builds where you play with a lot of AEther Vial/Flickerwisp hijinks. Same goes for Sagu Mauler, all rely on a bit of blinking fun. Not the most stable of win conditions, but for a budget casual build they do the trick.

Just to be sure, you play flickerwisp and exile a card, then cloudshift the flickerwisp and it banishes the card flickerwisp exile permanently?

Unfortunately the trick doesn't work with Flickerwisp but it does work with Tidehollow Sculler and Fiend Hunter. The trick is to play Cloudshift while their first ETB ability is on the stack so the leave ability resolves before the exile so the exile is no longer conditional.

Tydeorum - You could make Flickerwisp's exile gone for good if you have a Wasteland Strangler in play and a way to blink it the turn you play the wisp. Just keep in mind you'll have to target something with the -3/-3, which could be an opposing creature or, if their board is empty, will be one of your dudes.

Another trick, though less often used, with Tidehollow or Fiend is to sac it through Viscera Seer before the ETB resolves but you rarely need or really want to do that.

How do u get acroma into play

September 7, 2016 10:43 a.m.

bigpappyj says... #11

looky2003 - you can blink facedown creatures and they return to the battlefield face up. So Flickerwisp, Cloudshift, and Momentary Blink all do the trick.

I never knew that you could blink a face down creature to get them face up.... Neat trick +1

September 8, 2016 10:05 p.m.

bigpappyj says... #13

Icbrgr - It's a neat trick, picked it up from a D&T build that ran a single Akroma to flip by playing Flickerwisp either honestly or off an AEther Vial. Sagu Mauler are nice additions of extra muscle to get over the top. And no one expects them because no one ever plays them.

Thanks for the +1!

I feel like you have a pretty good matchup against fair decks, but you might stumble against Tron, Ad Nauseam, etc.. I think you could find room for a few Ghost Quarters in your manabase. As for combo decks, you do have Sculler, but I'm not sure if that's enough, even with the absurd amount of blinking you do(although if testing says otherwise, feel free to tell me otherwise. I'm just looking at the list at face value). I might add a few Duress, although I'm not sure what to cut. The list seems pretty fine-tuned as of now. Great deck!

Thanks, amazingdan, some good thoughts. Admittedly I haven't had the pleasure of running this up against may Tier 1 decks because I'm playing primarily on MTGO in casual settings, though once I figure out a sideboard and test more I am looking forward to League play (where I'll probably get eaten alive). The few times I've gone T1 it's typically like you're alluding to -- a bit of a struggle depending on what they can get on the board.

Ghost Quarter is a good add, especially if I open up the budget a bit and add a couple Eldrazi Displacers, the colorless would be useful then. Definitely a sideboard option at the very least in the current build.

Tidehollow Sculler does quite a bit of work early game but most of the blinking shenanigans are being used on other creatures, as neat as his trick is.

I'd love to look at more hate, especially early game, but I think the best shots at that are going to be in a more non-budget build with some Path to Exile and Inquisition of Kozilek available to me. But the biggest issue then is what to cut, even with a limitless budget. I've got a set of each to play with so I'll test more and see where adjustments can be made.

Thanks for the thoughts!

If you add a few more painlands you can run Thought Knot Seer, it works pretty good with blink/flicker. Also, Eldrazi Displacer...

veeonix - I think for a less budget build that'd be awesome. And I do have all of those in paper, so she may sleeve up to test. Eldrazi are so much fun...

This deck is really cool. Modern isn't really my forte, so I can't really suggest anything. However, the decks seems really good and fun to play, especially for budget!
