Hmm...Typhoid Rats will deter any heavy hitters as well as trade for another creature while Spellskite can possibly delay/protect my creatures/ and mess up combo decks. I'm leaning towards Spellskite but I need to think about it for a little bit. Thanks for your input man, I'll def update this with results after it's first FNM.

nice update. Have you considered using Vengeful Pharaoh ?

Vengeful Pharaoh was in the original version of this deck but I took him out then because I felt like he was just delay creature instead of a bomb. But now with post-rotation I will think about him. He could have potential and some funny synergy with card:Altar's Reap but I am wary of taking out a Bloodgift Demon for him. What do you guys think? If I put him in he'd be a 1 of and I'd have to lower Bloodgift Demon to 2.

Alright I love Alter's Reap, I think it is the perfect card draw for the deck. Vault skirge is fun and does a great job with a lashwrithe attached to him. With wurmcoils being as popular as they are, I'd probably switch the numbers of Gftt and victim of night. Very few of the various werewolves/vamps etc. are bigger than the effect of dismember.

I'd also look to put another distress in the MB and perhaps Gitaxian Probe . Free info and deck thinning is a great ability. I'd probably relegate the ratchet bomb to the sideboard because of that and remove one of the crusaders for room there. Not sure where to fit gitaxian probe though, but it might be a good use of deck thinning and information gathering during the first game to then sideboard after.

Overall the deck's rating speaks for itself. This is a very good deck and should perform well as is.

Very true, the first post-rotation FNM 2 weeks from now will be the starting point of the new meta so I will lower GFTT to 1 and throw in a Doom Blade . I have thought about the probe but deck thinning might not be entirely useful in my deck because I can use every card. I will think about adding another distress but I really don't know what I'd take out. Ratchet Bomb is in there mainboarded instead of 2 card:Black Sun's Zenith to deal with tokens/enchantments/etc but I might take it out after seeing how the new meta develops. Thanks so much for giving me your feedback!

Looks good. I do think you could get rid of a land or two. Try putting in two card:Praetor's Grasp. Gives you a chance to take there card and if you need a land you can borrow theirs. Other than that looks good

This deck is great, exactly what I was looking for. As a new player I still have difficulties with sideboarding. Could you please tell me how I should side against the basic archetypes? Thanks a lot. +1 from me

You dont need 25 lands. I run 20 lands and never have a problem. if your concerned run 22 lands

September 27, 2011 11:58 a.m.

popeyroach says... #14

22 land is way to few in a deck with 7 5+ creatures.20 land is the right amount for a deck like rdw or tempered steel that curves out at around 3-4 cmc.

I run 4 Wurmcoil Engine , 2 Batterskull , 2 Mirrorworks and 2 card:Life's Finale and never have a problem.

Thanks for the insight everyone! And I run 25 lands because playing a swamp every turn is very very important and I'm always in an unfavorable position when I don't. Also, having a lot of swamps gives Lashwrithe greater value as well.

Love the idea of mono B decks. Wouldn't it be a little better to focus on one or two of the removal spells rather then having a single of each? Heartless Summoning feels like it would fit wonderfully in this deck with all the higher CC creatures though it would kill your Vault Skirge immediately. Other then that love the deck.

Karnage says... #18

If you think about it, all the singleton removal spells don't forsake consistency at all. Think of it as having 3 Doom Blade s with different limitations. Instead of target non-black, maybe I can't target an artifact or a zombie/werewolf/vampire. That way if I am facing another black deck I can still potentially use Go for the Throat and Victim of Night without having 3 useless kill spells in my deck. Heartless Summoning is interesting yes. If I ran it then I would have to take out Vault Skirge as well as reduce the land count so it would be a different deck. Thanks for the comment and +1!

I like this concept too. But would you consider adding more instant removal like card:Geth's Verdict

Because, some of your ceatures are high casting some agro decks may do a quick assault on you.

+1 from me.

Phyrexian Rager is something I see more and more because of the lack of card draw. I think that you need some more removal and I like Doomblade over Victim of the Night.

I also think that Spellskite is a bit out of place in the deck and you only need 23-24 mana.

If you want a good 1 of card to run I like Corrupt.

Over all I think this deck has a bit of all the great things that black has to offer.

Nice I like the look of it. Spellskite is sweet to protect your beaters, but im not sure if id keep him. how has it been in testing?

also i think you could up the Phyrexian Obliterator count to 4, those guys are simply badass, and they answer planeswalkers quite nicely.

i love me some mono black, i miss my gatekeeper. have you condisdered Liliana of the Veil at all?+1!

You have win cons, and removal spells filling out your entire deck. Vault skirge seems unnecessary. The problem with more or less mono wincons/removal is that you need to draw the perfect mix or you will likely lose. Too much removal and you wont be able to close out the game, too many win cons and you wont last that long. You should cut your number of win cons to around 6-7. 2 demon, 2 wurmcoil, 2 grave, and a writhe seems good to me. Personally I am a big fan of consume the meek. Altars reep does not seem very good. Mimic vat does not seem great either, it lacks synergies. Bloodline Keeper  Flip  FlipMTG Card: Lord of Lineage seems pretty alright as a sideboard card against control. As does curse at deaths hold. If you cut your win con count to what i said Heartless Summoning seems broken as fuck.

Awesome deck, I'm curious about how this has played out against the new meta. Not sure what I'd be able to offer to possibly improve this any further, but Spellskite seems pretty out of place here, other than eating Dismember s, it really doesn't seem all that useful for anything more than a blocker.

If you could, take a look at my MBC, deck:decimate-the-weak-1, and let me know what you think.

I don't know what you're trying to accomplish with 1 Inkmoth Nexus . It's a good card but if you're mainboarding it, maybe use a couple more for consistency. You also might have problems with Hexproof and Pro-Black creatures, so I think maybe -1 Victim of Night and +1 card:Black Sun's Zenith in the mainboard. In the sideboard, I think -2 Tribute to Hunger and +1 Ratchet Bomb and +1 card:Geth's Verdict.

Also, if you have time, could you check out my MBC deck, Mono-Black Control sans Phyrexian Obliterator. Thanks!

This is a really nice control deck, you have coloured me impressed.

I alternatively think Spellskite should stay... I can definitely see where huginnson is coming from, but since you only have 15 creatures in your deck, you want to protect the one that you have out as much as possible. And further, that creature may be your only swinging force in the game (other than mimic vat).

With 25 lands, don't you think that it's a little much? Have you found yourself flooded with land often? Since you have such a low curve (most of your cards being 2 cmc), why not lower your land count to at most 23, maybe 22? If you dropped it to 23 you could make more additions to your deck, such as 1x more Vault Skirge and 1x more Lashwrithe . Or, even better, you could remove two of your Dismember s and add 2x Doom Blade and 2x Go for the Throat . That way you would have more control to protect your creatures. Anything rare that has indestructibility can be sacrificed via the Phyrexian Obliterator or discarded via Despise or Distress . All just suggestions though.

Overall, an excellent black control deck, definitely one of the best i've seen in a long time. +1
