This is my favorite deck. When I first saw Jolrael, I instantly fell in love. Immediately, I knew she was going to be an easy commander to build a deck around and a blast to play in my group.
Why Jolrael?
I have seen many mono-green generals for Commander. But none of them are quite like Jolrael. There are a few reasons why you would want to play Jolrael or, more specifically, this deck list.
First, Jolrael is NOT a target.
As soon as you sit down with this deck, your playgroup is gonna look at your General, and go, "Huh... Okay. Seems interesting. Um, yeah, I'm gonna target that Yisan, the Wanderer Bard or Narset, Enlightened Master deck over there. Seems like the threat for this game..." She's gonna keep the aggro off your back. She's gonna keep the element of surprise. Until you beat up the entire table with all your lands! Then the fools will be all the wiser next game.
Second, she's hard to predict.
Okay, real talk guys, but Cyclonic Rift ain't got shit against Jolrael's army. Those land creatures AREN'T getting bounced back to your hand anytime soon. Ya boys are gonna connect.
This next section is more of a confession about my deck building weakness: Even though this is a green deck, it doesn't ramp as hard as other green decks do. Well, that's not correct. It ramps, but the ramp experience isn't as consistent with this deck list. Some games you'll get all the gas you need. Some games you'll slowly but steadily draw the pieces you need.
REGARDLESS
The way this deck was built, you really don't commit too many permanents to the battlefield. I'm really proud of this part of the deck and I consider it one of the deck's strengths: Your enemies board wipes don't hurt your overall strategy! Control Player casts a Wrath of God?? Sure! Go ahead, wipe the board! We don't care. Since our Lands are eventually going to turn into creatures, there's nothing really to destroy on our side. You're like the Trojan Horse at the table: You durdle and durdle and your opponents say, "Well, he/she really doesn't have anything on the board, I'm not going to waste my resources on him/her." The turn you cast Jolrael and she survives until your next turn? That's when your opponents die!
Thirdly, she's a fun deck to build.
Jolrael decks are incredibly fun to build!!! I have never played a Green deck and did as many card draw shenanigans and tap/untap tricks as I have with Jolrael. She plays almost like a Blue deck! Seriously, this deck can draw cards. If you Ultimate Nissa, Vital Force and have Recycle in play, you're gonna draw some cards. Just sayin'.
As far as Mono Green decks are concerned in EDH, Jolrael just feels like she "breaks the rules". You're "supposed to" have 20+ creatures in a Mono Green deck, but with a general like Jolrael, you can really break out of that mold and do something new and interesting.
I want to make this section short. It's simple: play your draw engines as soon as you can, durdle like you are Baron Vann Herr Durdlemeister himself, cast Jolrael, float a ton of mana, tap/untap tricks, make your Lands into creatures, and turn them sideways to win!
But maybe a deeper look into how to combo with this deck is needed. Fair enough. Do this then:
Nissa, Vital Force. If you get her in your opening hand and pop that Ultimate off early, you made the game so much easier for yourself.
Sylvan Library. Can't say anything new about this card that's already been said. Good card.
Recycle + Reliquary Tower. Okay, I don't know about you guys, but "PLAY a card, DRAW a card"?!?!? Never sounded bad to me. Cheap card, it's only place is in EDH. It works, trust me. The way you play Recycle is that timestamps matter. Recycle has been errated to say "Your maximum handsize is two". You need to play Recycle first, and THEN play Reliquary Tower, so the game recognizes that you have No Maximum Handsize.
Greater Good. What do you do with an army of lands, but you don't have a finisher in hand like Craterhoof Behemoth? Sac them until you dig for 'Hoof! ORRRRRRRR, you could sac your 20/20 Avatar token from using the Thespian Stage + Dark Depths combo.
Nature's Revolt + Ezuri's Predation. If your opponents haven't already scooped at the sight of a Mono Green Deck performing a Mass Land Destruction trick, then you can peekaboo your Overrun or Overwhelming Stampede from your hand, and then watch them scoop. Or play it out if you've got their attention. Either way, casting an Overrun after getting that many tokens is gonna be lethal to somebody or e'rybody.
Damn! You didn't think you'd find an Armageddon trick in a Mono Green Deck, huh?
